Description

N. E. JAMES.
AUTOMOBILE LOCK. APPLICATION FILED AUG.21, 1919.
Patented June 15, 1920.
n 6 m E I h l H m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NEPHANUS E. JAMES, or BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
AUTOMOBILE-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEPHANUS E. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in looks and more particularly to automobile locks, and the object of the device is to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive,
et an efficient and reliable lock, which will ock the emergency brake and gear shifting levers together, as well as being capable of adaptation to the spark and gas controls, the clutch and service brake pedals, etc.
With the foregoing in view the invention resides in the novel device herein described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the.
lock, with parts in elevation.
Fig. 2 is an edge view.
Figs. 3 and 4: are transverse sections on the planes of the lines 33 and 44 of Fig. 1.
In the manufacture of the device, I utilize a U-shaped yoke 1 having a hinged arm 2 parallel with what may be considered the fixed arm 3, both of these arms being by preference round in transverse section, and
the inner sides of said arms are provided with notches 4 for a purpose to appear. The arm 3 is carried preferably by an L-shaped casting or the like 5, the arm 2 is provided with a head 6, and said casting and head are hinged together at 7.
A locking block 8 is mounted at one edge on the arm 8 for pivotal and preferably for sliding movement, while the other edge of said block is provided with means such as the groove 9 for coaction with arm 2, and whereby the latter holds the block normally against pivotal movement. A second locking block 10 slides on both arms 2 and 3 and is provided with bolts or the like 11 coacting with the notches 4 to lock said block against removal and to revent outward swinging of the arm 2. he bolts 11' may becontrolled by key or permutation means of any suitable character and such means may well be housed in a casing 12 in the block 10.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 15 192() Application filed August 21. 1919. Serial No. 318.922;
The adjacent edges of the blocks 9 and 10 and the casting 5 may be provided with seats 13 to receive the gear and brake levers, the clutch and service brake pedals, etc., and if desired, the arm 2 -may* be of greater length than the arm 3 and may be provided at its outer end with a stop 2*. This will prevent the block 10 from becoming entirely detached and possibly lost.
To apply-the lock, the block 10 is released, allowing outward swinging of arm 2, which allows pivoting of block 8 on arm 3, so that it may be inserted between the two parts to be locked. Arm 2 is now swung into groove 9, and the block 10 is slid to locking position and locked, thereby securely holding all parts against operation.
The device is simple, inexpensive and efficient, and although preferably constructed as shown may be otherwise formed within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A look comprising a yoke having an outwardly swinging arm, a lock block adjacent the inner end of the yoke pivoted on one arm and having means coacting with the other arm to normally hold said block against pivotal movement, a second look block slidable on the yoke arms and removable from at least one thereof, and means for locking said second block.
2. A look comprising a U-shaped yoke having a fixed arm and an outwardly swing,- ing arm, the inner portions of both arms of the yoke being provided with teeth and one of saidarms being of greater length than the other, a stop on the free end of the longer yoke arm, a lock block pivotally mounted on the relatively short arm and having a groove into which the longer arm swings, a second look block slidable on both arms and movable outwardly against said stop to clear the shorter arm and release the lock, and locking means carried by said second look. block for coaction with the aforesaid teeth to normally hold said second look block against movement.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
NEPHANUS E. JAMES.
Witnesses: M. K. MILLER, J. M. FAUNOE.
