Patented May. l0, 19121.
Application filed May 12, 1919. SerialfNo. 296,566.
To all fw hom t may concern:
Be it known thaty l, Hennen GREENING, a snbjectottl e King of. England, residing at Dorchester, in the county oDOrSet, Fingland, have invented certain new and useiul improvements in or Connected with Collapsible Boxes, oi" which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collapsible bones to be used as packing cases tor commercial and other purposes, and has for its object to provide a simple construction of boi; wherein the sides and ends will told Over the bottom, and the coverbe fired over them, so as to collapse the boi;` into a small compass for returnedempty carriage or the like.
A collapsible box according to my invend tion comprises a bottom part to which are hinged the two side parts and two end parts, the side` parts being,` adapted to told one over the other on the bottom part, and the end parts being adapted to fold over the two side parts. rlhe lid is adapted to be placed and fastened over the above folded parts so as to provide a compact portable arrangement of the parts in a small compass. .in an open position the side parts are fastened by means of sliding` locks to the end parts, and when the lid or cover is placed on, it is also locked t-o the end parts, thereby providing` a secure fastening when the box vis closed. This locking` device is provided on one of the end parts `by means-of which the lid may be locked on thebox, and the lock is then covered by a direction label which prevents the lock being tampered with.
in order to make my invention clearly understood refer to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l shows the boi; in side perspective elevation with the front side thrown back;
Fig. 6 showsa plan .view of the boxwith the ends and sides raised, and
F ig. 7 shows a'perspective drawing ot a deep and narrow box;
With reference to thedrawings, a desighates the bottoni part ot" the box, 1 denote the sidev parts respectively, and c, c1 denote the end` parts. rlhe side part lo is hinged at Z to the bottom part a, as shown in Fig'. l, so that it' will turn downvand lie flat on the said bottom part, and thel side part b1 is hinged to a bar al on the bottom part c, so that when itis turned down `it-wiil lie datover the turned-down side part' In like manner the end parts.` c, c1 are hinged at (Z1, Z1 to the raised parts e, c1 atthe ends ot the bottoni c so `that when they are turned down they lie flat over'the side parts t), 1,
as shown in Fig. t. rThe sideparts o, bt are secured at the respective corners to the. end parts c, c1 by means of slide catches with bent-over parte f1 provided on the said side parts and adapted to engage with scr w heads LZ provided "on the corner parts c2, by whichrneans the box parts aresecurely at'- tached together.
rlhese slide catches 7"l are shown in an engaged position in Figs. 1A, 1B, andin a disengaged'z position in Fig. 1C. Each of the slide catches f is mountedin a recess r cut in the side partsV so that` the corresponding racesV ot' the said catchesY and` the side parts are dash; rThe@catchesarewinoreover guidedby clips or guilde plates 79, the ycatches being formed with undercut key hole slots f2 and the 'clips with holes f3 in such a manner, that the screw heads 7i?, when the side parts are raised for Fixing purposes, are made to project through the holes f3 and the ircular portion oi' the key hole slots f2. To secure the side parts in this position it is then merely necessary to slide the catches, the screwed part of the screw head h2 thus being caused to engage the narrow part ot the key hole slot f2. The disposition of the screw'heads and the slide catches is more clearly shown in Fig. 5.
rlhe bent-over parts f1, when the side parts are secured to the corner pieces c2, are engaging with the top of the latter and held in position by the cover of the box so that accidental displacement of the catches is prevented. g denotes the cover or lid which is adapted to be placed over the box and fastened by means of devices similar to that already described and comprising undercut key hole slots g1 and undercut grooves g2, shaped respectively on the underside of the cover g as shown, and adapted to engage with the screw heads h2 on the end parts c, c1 as the cover is slid over. Thatis to say, the cover is secured to the box by sliding it in the direction of the arrow, F ig. 3, the screw heads h2 thus being made to lie in the circular portion et the slot g1 and the undercut grooves respectively, and preventing detachment of the cover other than by a sliding movement in a direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow. Y
t is a locking device of the form shown in Fig. 4A, comprising a pin which s set in a recessed part h1 on the end part c, and which can be turned, elevated, and inserted into a hole in the cover. This locking device is then covered, as previously stated, by means of an address label which prevents it from being tampered with.
To collapse the box when the cover has been removed, the catches f are raised by means of the bent-over parts f1 and the side part b turned down, after which the side part b1 is turned down to cover the part b. Then the end parts c, 01 are turned down to lie over the side parts, and the cover is placed in position over the folding parts and secured by other screw heads 71,2 which are inserted into holes in the upright bars j, as shown in Fig. 2.'
In the case of deep narrow boxes, the side parts b1 are made in two pieces hinged together to enable them to fold down and lie on the bottom, as shown in Fig. 7.
The completed box provides a simple and convenient arrangement, inasmuch as it can be collapsed when required for return transport or otherwise, the parts being easily raised into position to form a suitable receptacle for commercial or other uses.
Having now fully described my said invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In the herein described collapsible box in which vthe side parts and the end parts are provided with corner pieces and hinged to the bottom part so as to be adapted to told one over the other and over the said bottom part, means for locking the side parts and the end parts to and unlocking the same from each other, the said means comprising a slide catch, ano guide plates near the corners and tops ot each of the side parts and having undercut key hole slots and holes respectively, and screw heads secured to the aforesaid corner pieces and adapted to engage withr the key hole slots in the catches and the holes in the guide plates, all substantially as set forth.
2. In the herein described collapsible bei? in which 4the side parts and the enc. cams are hinged to the bottom part ,nd adapted to fold one over the other and over the said bottom part and wherein one or' the end parts is provided with recess, the combination, with means for loclring the side and end parts to each other, of a cover having a. hole and undercut key hole slots and undercut cut grooves at its underside, and means for locking the cover to the end parts the said means comprisingscrew heads secured in the said end pans with Vwhich the said slots and grooves are adapted to engage, and a pin which is set in theaforesaid recess o' one or" the end parts which pin is adapted to be turned, elevated, and insered into the iole of the cover, all as and :Sor the purpose set forth and shown.
In testimony whereoia I have hereunto set my hand in the presence or' two subscribing witnesses.
HORLAC f GIENING.
