Description

W; F. ELLIS.
PASTE-RECEPTACLE. APPLICATION mm APR. 11, I920- 1,377, 567. Patented May 10,1921.
6 than Ul'i'ED STATES PATENT FFICEQ WILLIAM F. ELLIS, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, lessrelvon T0 THE STANDARD MANU- FAGTURING COMPANY, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, A CORPORATION or MARY- LAND.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paste-Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the fOllOWil'lg to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a receptacle for containing paste, and has for its principal object to provide means for constantly supplying'the paste with the requisite amount of moisture to maintain it in condition for A further object of the invention is to produce a paste receptacle of simple, compact and inexpensive form.
These objects are accomplished by em ploying a jar within which is an open ended tube adapted to form a water well and brush receiving receptacle, an absorbent flexible sheet being arranged at the bottom of the jar andhaving an opening therein conforming to the periphery of the lower end of the tube and through which the tube V extends, the absorbent sheet preferably entirely covering the. bottom of the jar and extending upwardly a short distance in contact with the side walls thereof and the upper end of the tube being provided with a cap or closure reducing the evaporation of water from the well and also forming a support for a brush extending into said tube.
In the drawings illustrating the invention, the scope whereof is pointed out in the claims,-- I c Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a paste receptacle embodying my invention, the closure for the tubular well and the brush supported thereby being shown in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the flexible absorbent sheet covering the bottom of the jar exterior to the tubular well, portions being broken away to illustrate the character of its different layers.
In the drawings, 1 is a jar or paste container and 2 is a cover therefor, the latter preferably being of the screw cap type with a flat upper surface. A gasket 3 of rubber or other suitable packing material is preferably interposed between the cover and the upper end of the ar. It will be under- Specification of Letters Patent.

stood, however, that the forms imparted to the ar and cover may be as desired. VVith- 1n the Jar i, and preferably arranged centrally with respect thereto, is a tube 4: which is open at both ends. This tube, being designed to form a well for containing water to supply moisture to the paste, is preferably made of glass.
Surrounding the lower end of the tube 4; is a disk or sheet 5 of absorbent flexible material, such asfelt, having an opening 6 therein which conforms to the periphery of the lower end of the tube. The disk 5 is preferably formed with an intermediate portion or layer 7 which is of a more open or porous character than the upper and lower layers 8 and '9, respectively, of the sheet, and the said sheet is preferably made of suflicient size to permit its outer margmal portionto slightly overlap the side walls of the jar 1. This overlapping of the flexible disk 5 and the side walls of the jar is advantageous in that such a construction operates to prevent the paste, which is poured into the space between the jar and the independent tube 4,;from readily flowing under the flexible disk and permeating and clogging the lower stratum 9 thereof. To minimize the possibility of the hot paste permeating the pores of the lower layer 9 of the feltdisk adjacent to the tubular water well l, and also for the purpose of preventing the paste when it is being poured hot from readily gaining access to the tube through the open lower end thereof, it is preferred to interpose a thin sheet of tissue paper 10, or other absorbent material, between the lower end of the tube and the bottom of the jar, the sheet 10 extending outwardly beyond the periphery of the tube and contacting the lower surface of the flexible disk 5 for a short distance.
The upper end of the tube 4 is preferably covered by a closure 11 in the form of a flat topped disk which may be made of wood and be provided on its under side with aplug or projection 12 adapted to support a brush 1?), the closure disk 11 of the tube thereby serving as a handle forsaid brush. This results not only in a very compact construction but it is also advantageous and convenient in that the closure disk 11 serves as a base permitting the brush 13 to stand in an upright position thereby preventing undesired contact of the paste covered bristles with any object upon which the brush may be placed when not in use.
The water which is placed in the tubular well 4 seeps out between the lower end of the latter and the bottom of the jar 1 and is absorbed by the sheet of flexible material 5, its progress toward the outer margin of the sheet so as to make the supply of water substantially uniform being promoted by the increased porosity of its intermediate layer or stratum 7. The water supplied to the porous disk is continuously absorbed by the paste as may be required, thus keeping the paste moist and ready for use at all times.
I claim 1. A paste receptacle involving a jar, an independent tube having open ends, said tube constituting a water well within the jar opening into the jar at the bottom thereof,
I and an absorbent flexible sheet disposed at the bottom of said jar and having an opening into which the lower end of said tube extends.
2. A paste receptacle involving a jar, an independent tube having open ends, said tube constituting a water well within the jar opening into the jar at the bottom thereof, and an absorbent flexible sheet covering the bottom of said jar, said sheet having an opening for the passage of the lower end of the well tube and constituting means for positioning the lower end of said tube with respect to said jar.
3. A paste receptacle involving a jar, an independent tube having open ends, said tube constituting a water well within the jar opening into the jar at the bottom thereof, and an absorbent flexible sheet covering the bottom of said jar and extending upwardly in contact with the side walls thereof, said sheet having an opening conforming to the periphery of the lower end of said tube and through which said tube extends.
4;. A paste receptacle involving a jar, an independent tube having open ends, said tube constituting a water well within the jar opening into the jar at the bottom thereof,
and an absorbent flexible sheet disposed at the bottom of said and having an opening into which the lower end of said tube extends, said sheet having layers of different porosity.
5. A paste receptacle involving a jar, an independent tube having open ends, said tube constituting a water well within the jar opening into the ar at the bottom thereof, and an absorbent flexible sheet disposed at the bottom of said jar and having an opening into which the lower end of said tube extends, said sheet having an intermediate layer of greater porosity than its outer layers.
6. A paste receptacle involving a jar, an independent tube having open ends, said tube constituting a water well Within the jar opening into the jar at the bottom thereof, an absorbent flexible sheet disposed at the bottom of said jar and having an opening into which the lower end of said tube ex tends, and an absorbent flexible sheet of less area than the first named absorbent sheet, said last named sheet interposed between the lower end of said tube and the bottom of said jar and underlying a portion of said first named sheet. 1
7. A paste receptacle involving a jar, an independent tube having open ends,'said tube constituting a water well within the jar opening into the jar at the bottom thereof, said tube adapted to receive a brush, a flat top disk closure for the upper end of said tube, said closure being adapted to support a brush within said tube. V
8. A paste receptacle involving a jar, a tube forming a water well within said jar and adapted to receive a brush, and a flat topped disk forming a closure for the upper end of said tube, said closure being adapted for the attachment of a brush thereto, and a flat top closure for the paste jar or recep tacle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. WILLIAM F. ELLIS.
