BERTI-IA BLOOM, 0F WOODCLIFF, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNQR T0 MAX SCIi-IULTZ, OF WOODCLIFF, NEW JERSEY.
JEWELRY-CLASP.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, BERTHA BLooM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodclitl'l, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Jewelry-Clasps, ot' which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to fastening means for separably joining the ends of flexible bracelets, collars, and the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a clasp which will engage automatically, hold reliably, and may be easily and economically manufactured.
The invention consists in certain details ot construction and arrangement by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this s'peciication and show the invention as it has been carried out in practice.
Figure l is a face view of the clasp in the fully locked condition, with its two members shown attached to the ends of a bracelet.
Fig. 2 is a section taken longitudinally or1 the clasp, on theJ line 2--2 in Fig. l, with certain portions omitted.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
. Fig. 4 is a face view of the inner member 'carrying the locking staple.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the outer member in which is the slot for the reception of the staple.
Fig. 6 is a face view of the clasp alone, corresponding to Fig. l, showing the members in the partially engaged position or conditioned for disengagement.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the inner member and 2 the outer member, both shown as flat plates of rectangular outline with rounded corners and approximately the same length and width, but the forms and relative sizes may' be varied.
'On the lower member is an outwardly projecting loop or staple 3 shown as formed integrally with the plate l, and in the plate 2 is a slot 4 adapted to inclose the staple 3 with the latter projecting therethrough suficiently to receive a spring-ring 5 or other removable locking means serving to prevent the withdrawal of the staple from the slot. The spring-ring 5 is shown as attached to the outer member 2 by a chain 6.

gin of the member 2, thus completing the band.
The slot 4 is 01"' such dimensions as to permitthe staple 3 to pass through in the engaging and disengaging operations, and has two lateral portions or recesses l0, one at each end of the longitudinal slot 4, extend-y ing at right angles to the latter' and both in the same direction, the metal between forming a tongue ll lying in the plane of the member2. f
vWhen the staple is inserted in the slot 4 the tension of the bracelet automatically draws the legs of the staple into the lateral portions or recesses l0 with the tongue ll engaged in the staple. Thus conditioned the staple is held andthe ytwo members cannot be separated. `The spring-ring 5 is then engaged in the bight of the stapleas a safe guard against disengagement.
So long as the bracelet is under tension the tongue ll maintains its engagement and the bracelet must be shortened slightly kby sliding the` members l and 2 upon each other to permit the staple to register with the longitudinal slot 4 in the operation of opening the clasp. A
Modifications may be made in the forms and proportions of the parts in adapting the invention to various articles of jewelry or tol other articles of the belt or band type. rIhe spring-ring 5 may be omitted or other fastening means as a substituted.
I claim In a device of the character set ortlnan inner member having an outwardly `projecting staple, and an outer member having a slot and recesses adapted to receive said staple, a tongue on said outer member between such recesses, arranged to enter said staple and prevent the separation of the members, and a removable locking means received in saidstaple exterior to said outer member.
In testimony that I claim the invention above set forth I aiiix my signature.
BERTHA BLOOM.
