To all L0 from it may concern:
Be it known that 1, river G. Vorerrr, a citizen of the United States, residing in New Haven, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Molasses-Gate Look, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to faucets, spigots, etc., and more particularly to what are known in the trade as molassesor oil gates, in which a discharge spout or nozzle is provided with a swinging yoke or bail having a sliding valve plate or gate adapted to close and open the discharge passage when the yoke is suitably actuated.
One object of my invention is to provide improved means for locking the valve controlling gate in its closed position by means.
of a padlock so as to prevent theft of the liquid contents of the barrel or other receptacle in connection with which the gate is used.
' Another object of my invention is to furnish a. simple,.eilicient construction in which the padlock is located above and some distance from the discharge end of the gate or spout, so that there is no likelihood of the liquid contents getting upon the pad lock or the parts of the gate with which the padlock cooperates;
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a so-called molasses gate embodying my improvements, showing the gate locked in the closed position;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation similar to Fig. 1, showing the valve gate in its unlocked position, the spout being partly broken away.
The gate selected for illustration has the usual spout or body portion 10 adapted to be mounted in a barrel, cask or other receptacle (not shown) in connection with which the gate is to be used. A U-shaped yoke or bail 11 is pivoted or swiveled on the spout so as to swing vertically, the end portions of the U being swiveled to the wall of the body portion or spout 10 by means of lugs or trunnions l2 projecting laterally from the sides of the body portion 10. The intermediate portion 13 of the yoke 11 carries a sliding valve plate 14, preferably of brass, adapted to make a tight lit with the mouth portion 15 of the spout. The mouth portion 15 has a discharge opening 16 communicating with the hollow interior of the spout, and the mouth portion is curved on an arc concentric with the trunnions 12, the valve plate 14 being curved on a corresponding are so as to slide over the discharge portion of the spout with a tight fit. When the yoke 11 is raised by the handle 17 into the position shown in Fig. 3, the opening 16 will be uncovered so that the liquid can be drawn from the receptacle, but when the yoke is moved down ,again into the position shown in Fig. 1, the plate 14 covers the discharge opening so as to cut off the flow of liquid.
The body portion 10 and yoke 11 are preferably made or. cast iron, the yoke being formed of two parts secured together by screws 18. Between the two parts of the yoke 11 is formed a socket, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3, in which is mounted a coiled spring 19,the socket being formed partly in one yoke member and partly in the other. This spring 19 engages the outer face of the valve plate or gate 14 so as to press it tightly against the curved end sur face of the spout, which forms a seat for. said plate, in order to prevent leakage. An outer projection 20 on the valve plat-e 14 extends into the coils of the spring so as to maintain the parts in their proper relation.
The mechanism soqfar described is old, as shown in the H. B. Sargent Patent No. 1,199,501, granted September 26, 1916, and forms no part of my invention. My inven tion, which, as above stated, consists in providing improved means for locking the valve plate or gate 14 in its spout closing position, will now be described.
Upon one side of the spout or body portion 10, some distance from the discharge end of the same. is provided an upwardly extending projection 21, the same being, preferably positioned directly above one of the lugs or trunnions 12. Upon one of the legs of the U-shaped yoke 11 is formed a projection 22, the same being positioned to a-line with the projection 21 when the yoke 11 is moved to its spout closed position, drill holes 23 being formed through the projections 21 and 22 in alinement with each other and adapted to receive the shackle of a padlock 24.
From the construction just described it will be seen that the projections 21 and 22 -not only form a very convenient means for locking the valve plate or gate 14 in its spout closing position, but that this arrangement retains the padlock 24 above the spout 10 at some distance from the valve closing end of the same, so that there is very little likelihood of the liquid which may be drawn out oi the molasses gate becoming accidentally smeared over the padlock.
It will be apparent that various changes may be made in the device herein disclosed without departing from the scope of my invention as defined in the inclosed claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a molasses gate or spout having a discharge opening, and a yoke, swiveled thereon and carrying a valve to control said opening, said yoke having a padlock opening positioned upon the side of swivel point opposite said; valve, whereby said padlock opening moves downwardly when said. valve is moved upwardly to uncover the discharge opening. 7
2. In combination, a molasses gate or spout having an opening, a yoke swiveled thereon and carrying a valve to control said opening a projection formed upon said gate or spout at said swivel point and ex tending therefrom in a direction away from said valved opening, and means to lock said yoke to said projection when said valve is in spout closing position.
3. In combination with a molasses gate or spout having a discharge opening, a U- shaped yoke swiveled thereupon, and a valve carried by said yoke and movable thereby over said opening; means for locking-said yoke in its spout closing position, comprising a projection upon said U-shaped yoke adjacent said swivel, a cooperating alined openings, and a padlock having a shackle extending through said alined openings.
4. In a locking device in combination, a molasses gate or spout having an opening, and a yoke swiveled thereon and carrying valve to control said opening, said yoke having a padlock opening positioned above the spout body and substantially in vertical alinement with the swivel point when in looking position.
5. In a molasses gate or the like, a spout having a discharge opening, a U-shaped yoke having legs pivoted to said spout, a valve carried by said yoke and movable thereby over said discharge opening to close the same, one of the legs of the U-shaped yoke being extended beyond its pivot and means for locking said extended portion against movement relative to said spout.
6. In a molasses gate or the like. a spout having a discharge opening, a U-shaped yoke having legs pivoted to said spout, a valve carried by said yoke and movable thereby over said opening to close the same, one of the legs'ot said yoke being extended beyond its pivot, a projection on the spout adjacent said extended end, and means to lock said end to said projection.
7. The combination of a spout having a lischarge opening, a lever swiveled upon said spout, a valve carried by said lever and movable thereby over said discharge opening to close the same, said lever having an extension beyond the swiveled point of the same and remote from the valve, and means for locking said extension to'said spout to prevent movement thereof.
