LOCK FAUCIET.
Application filed June e,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALoNZo A. WARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lock Faucets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. c
My invention relates to faucets and other valves, and has for its object to provide novel and improved means in a device of this character for locking it from operation.
The several features of the invention will be clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which,- j
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a faucet shown closed and locked embodying the features of the invention in their preferred form;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a. portion of the same;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view', partly in elevation, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional elevation of the faucet in open position.
The faucet illustrated in the drawings is provided with a casing 2 and a valve member 4 in the form of a tapering plug having a valve opening 6, the plug being adapted to be turned to open and close the valve-opening and being held from axial outward movement by means of a cap` screw 8 on the lower end thereof, and a spring washer 9 interposed between the head of the screw and the lower end of the casing. The stem of the plug projects a distance beyond the end of the neck 10 of the casing 2 and is bifurcated to provide an upwardly opening axial slot 12 in which an operating handle 14 is pivotally mounted on a transverse pin 16 secured to the valve stem.
As illustrated the upper end of the neclr 10 of the casing is provided with an annular flange 18 having a vertical radial notch 19, and the handle 14 is provided with a portion 20 which is adapted to be received in the notch 19 when the yvalve is closed and the handle is swung downwardly as shown in Fig. 1. the side walls of the notch 19 cooperating with said portion of the handle to prevent the stem from being turned. The upper end of the valve stem is provided with a laterally7 projecting flange 21 and 1922. Serial No. 566,298.
a flattened surface portion 22 adjacent the under side of the ange. This flange 21 provides op'positely located abutments. The handle 14 is provided with an opening or -aperture 24 which, when the handle is swung down so as to engage in the notch 19, has its inner wall registering with the flat surface portion 22 of the stem and its upper wall registering with the abutment formed by the under side of the flange 21. The aperture 24k is adapted to receive the hasp or bolt 26 of a paddock 28 when the valve is closed and the handle swung down to bring it into. the notch 19 of the casing, the hasp, when in the aperture 24, cooperating with the abutment formed by the under side of the flange 21 to lock the handle from being swung upwardly out of the notch 19.
In order to prevent the handle 14 from being removed fromy the valve stem when the valve is locked, in case the pivot pin 16 should be removed, so as to permit the valve stem to be turned, the handle is provided with studs 30 projecting laterally therefrom adjacent the rear side of the valve stem and the under side of the flange 21 when the handle is in locked position, the studs 30 cooperating with the flange 21, the side of the plug and the hasp 26 to prevent removal ofthe handle. Y
The handle 14 is provided with a pair of laterally and downwardly projecting lugs 32 on opposite sides thereof, which, when the handle is in locked position, are positioned beneath the abutment provided by the flange 18 of the casing, the lugs thus cooperating with the flange 18 to prevent the valve from being opened by drawing out the valve plug when the cap screw 8 isoosened or removed. The engagement of the portion 33 of the handle with the bottom of the slot 12, when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. l, coacts with the lug 32 to prevent the valve member from being even partially removed so as to be loosened when both the pin 16 and the cap screw 8 are removed.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that a simple, strong and efficient locking means is provided which when locked not only prevents the valve stem from being turned but also prevents opening of the valve by tampering with 'the parts thereof, as by removing the pivot pin 16 or the cap screw 8 or both the pivot pin and screw.
While it is preferred to employ the specific construction and arrangement of parts illustrated and described, it is to be understood that this construction and arrangement is not essential except so far as specified in the claims and may be changed or modified Without departing. from the broader features of the invention.
I'Vhat I claim is:
l. In a. valve, a valve casing, a valve member turning therein and `provided with a stem, a handle pivoted to said stem so as to move in the plane of its axis, said cas-- ing and handle having portions adapted to engage when the handle is in one position so as to lock said stem from turning, said handle having an opening, and means ypassing through said opening and cooperating with said stem to hold said handle. in said one position, said handle having a projection on the opposite side of its pivotal connection from said opening, and said stem having a downwardly facing abutment engaged by said projection When said handle is in said position.
Q. In a valve, a valve casing, a valve niember turning therein and provided With a stem, a handle pivoted to said stem so as to move in the plane of its axis, said casing and handle having portions adapted to engage when the handle is in one position so as to lock said stem from turning, said handle having an opening, said casing having a projection and said handle having a portion engaging the lower side of said projection When said handle is in said one position, and means passing through said opening and cooperating with said stem to hold said handle in said one position.
3. In a valve, a valve casing, a valve member turning therein and provided with a stem, a handle pivoted to said stem so as to move in the plane of its axis, said casing and handle having portions adapted to engage When the handle is in one position so as to lock said stem from turning, said handle having an opening, said handle having a projection on the opposite side of its pivotal connection from said opening, and said stem having an abutment engaged by said projection When said handle is in said position, said casing having a projection and said handle having a portion engaging the lower side of said projection when said handle is in said one position, and means passing through said opening and cooperating with said valve member to hold said handle in said one position.
4. In a valve, a valve casing, a valve mem ber turning therein and having a slotted projecting stem, a handle pivoted to saidl stem and located at its slot, said stem having abutments on opposite sides adjacent to said slot and in a plane above the pivotal connection of said handle, said handle having onone side of said connection a pro jection adapted to engage the lower side of one of said stem abutments, and on the other side of said connection an opening in a plane belovv the other abutment and closely adjacent thereto when said projection i-s in engagement With said first abutment, said casing having a notched abutment, and said handle having portions adapted to enter said notch and to engage the lower surface of said casing abutment respectively when said projection is in engagement with its stem abutment, so that a bolt when in said opening will lock said casing, stem and handle together.
