Be it known that I, ALExANDnn BLOCK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in locks, and more particularly to that type of lock wherein the locking mechanism or parts thereof is operable by means of a cylinder lock operably connected therewith, said cylinder lock being adapted to be operated by means of the ordinary flat pin cylinder lock ke ln locks of the cylinder orpin types the casing of the cylinder lock is fastened to the lock body and the door by means of screws passing through a back plate of the lock proper and through ears on the cylinder lock casing and held together by means of nuts. The tumbler barrel of thek said cylinder lock is connected by means of a spindle with a rotatable sleeve in the main lock, said sleeve being provided with a cam which is adapted to operate the locking mechanism of said main lock when a key inserted in the tumbler barrel rotates the tumbler barrel, the spindle, and the cam on said rotatable sleeve.
Locks of this type may be easily operated without the use of a key, and the door opened through the expediency of tearing out the tumbler barrel casing and the spindle with a jimmy. The burglar may then introduce a screw driver in the rectangular opening'of the rotatable sleeve and therebyv operate the locking mechanism and open the door. ln one type of Segal lock, however, although the door cannot be opened through such expediency, still the objectionable feature is that the-tumbler barrel casing can be torn out and the burglar is thus given the opportunity to devise some implement for actuating the locking mechanism.
The main. object of my invention is to provide in a lock of the above type, ,a tumbler barrel casing so connected with the lock body' that it shall be impossible for a burglar to tear out said tumbler. barrel casing through ythe expediency of introducing a jimmyor any other instrument. Unlocking of the door through the above-mentioned expediency shall therefore becomeimpossible.
Another object sought is to provide a lock of the type described herein with proper means of adjustment to adapt the lock for use on doors of different thicknesses. By the piesent construction the proper adjustment of the lock is rendered easy.
Locks of this type, such as the Voight lock, have been made in which the adjustment for diiferent thicknesses of doors is made by means of a screw, which may be operated from the outer end of the cylinder lock. A vburglar could readily open the door by removing the escutcheon plate and turning said screw by means of applying a screw driver; the telescopic lsection f having the tumbler barrel can thus be removed from the other section; or, said other section, being screwed into the back plate of the lock casing may be readily unscrewed and the locking mechanism operated.
' In the lock disclosed herein, the adjustment is made only from the inner side of the back plate, and means are provided that render it Vimpossible for a burglar to remove, displace or tear out the cylinder lock casing through the expediency of introducing a jimmy or otherwise.
I will now describe the drawings, wherein, Figure l is a section of the door to which a lock embodying my invention is applied, shown partly in section and partly in elevation. Fig. 2 shows an edge view of the back plate to which is connected the cylinder forming vone of the telescopic sections of the cylinder lock. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of same connected with the tumbler-barrel casing. Fig. i is a view of the outer end of the cylinder lock. Lock casing l is provided with a back plate 2' 2a designates a c lindrical member on said back plate, Vsaid cylinder and said back plate being preferably of one piece of metal. The cylinder has an inner opening and an outer opening, and is provided with inwardly extending flage or flanges 2b at its outer end. A plate 3 is or may be provided for closing said inner opening of the cylinder, said plate being removably attachable to the back plate 2. Said plate 3 may embrace a rotatable sleeve 4a having a cam l4 for operating the locking mechanism.
A tumbler barrel K is rotatably mounted in a tumbler-barrel casing T. The said tumbler barrel is or may be operably connected with cam 4l through sleeve la preferably by means of a spindle 6, and a key inserted in said tumbler barrel and rotating same will rotate said spindle 6 and the cam, and operate the locking mechanism. Said casing T embraces an outwardly extending flange or lianges about its inner end, and a threaded abutment S. A screw 5 passes through an opening in said plate 3 and into said threaded abutment S of said tumblerbarrel casing T; a collar 8 on said screw preventing independent longitudinal movement of said screw. Said screw 5 on being rotated moves the cylinder lock longitudinally in said cylindrical member 2a of back plate 2 and may thereby adjust the lock for doors of different thicknesses, The adjustment can be made only from the inner end of said cylindrical member and is therefore not accessible to anyone from the outside of the. door, or for that matter from the inside of the door without first removing the lock body.
It is obvious that the cylinder lock embodied in my invention is rendered jimmyproof; firstly, because cylinder 2a is preferably made of one metal casting with the back plate 2; secondly, because the adjusting screw 5 is not accessible from the outside of the door as in the Voight lock; and thirdly because flanges 2b of cylinder 2a are engageable with flanges l5 of tumbler-barrel casing T. Cylinder 2a is not removable; screw 5 not adjustable from the outer side of door, and said flanges being engageable with each othershould a burglar succeed in breaking the screw or damaging the threads thereon, the best he can accomplish is to movevthe tumbler-barrel casing a distance to deliver its flanges into engagement with the flanges of cylinder 2, and the further movement outward of the cylinder lock is arrested.
In assembling the lock described above, the initial step is to remove the back plate 2 with its cylindrical member 2a from the lock casing l; bore a hole H in the door D of a diameter Alarge enough to admit said cylindrical member 2a. Unscrew or detach plate,
3 from said back plate 2, and insert the cylinder lock T through the inner opening of the cylinder 2a; then insert screw 5 in threaded abutment S and again attach plate '3 to back plate 2. Inserting the cylinder lock and said cylindrical member into said bored hole H in door D, until back plate 2 is flush with door, adjust the lock for that door by turning screw 5 in the desired direction until the required adjustment is made. Then remove the back plate and the parts attached thereto from the door and screw or attach said plate to the lock casing. The lock may now be attached to the door, the cylinder lock having been properly adjusted, and an escutcheon plate applied on the outside of the door.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a lock, a lock casing having a removable plate, a cylindrical member thereon, said member embracing an inner and an outer opening, a tumbler barrel casing, said cylindrical member and said tumbler-barrel casing being connected together for longitudinal adjustment relatively to each other, a plate for covering the inner opening of said cylindrical member, a rotatable sleeve having a cam on said covering plate, a rotatable key plug carried by said tumbler barrel casing, an adjusting device operatively connecting said covering plate with said tumbler-barrel casing, said adjusting device being accessible for operation only at the inner aspect of said covering plate, and additional means for arresting the outward movement of said tumbler barrel casing.
2. In a lock, a lock casing having a removable plate, a cylindrical member upon said plate, said member embracing an inner and an outer opening, a tumbler-barrel casing,-
said cylindrical member and said tumblerbarrel casing being connected together :for longitudinal adjustment relatively to each other, a covering plate for the inner opening of the cylindrical member, means associated with said plate for operating the locking mechanism in said lock casing, a rotatable key plug carried by said tumblerbarrel casing, said plug being adapted to operate the means for actuating said locking mechanism, and an adjusting device operatively connecting said covering plate with said tumbler-barrel casing, said adjusting device being accessible for operation at the inner aspect of said covering plate, and means independent of said adjusting means for restricting the outward movement of said tumbler barrel casing.
3. In a lock, a lock casing having a removable plate, a cylindrical member thereon, said member having an inner and an outer opening, a cylinder lock, said cylindrical member and said cylinder lock being connected together for longitudinal adjustment relatively to each other, a covering plate for the inner opening of the cylindrical member, a cam associated with said plate, a rotatable key plug in said cylinder lock, means connecting said key plug with said cam, said key plug being adapted to operate said cam for actuating the locking mechanism, and an adjusting device connecting said covering plate with said cylinder lock, said adjusting device being accessible for operation atl the inner aspect of said covering plate, and separate means preventing the removal of the tumbler barrel casing from the outside of the door, said means being independent of said adjusting device.
4. In a lock, a lock casing having a cylindrical member thereon, said member having an inner and an outer opening, a tumbler-barrel casing, said cylindrical member and said tumblerbarrel casing being connected together for longitudinal adjustment relatively to each other, a covering plate for the inner opening of said cylindrical member, a rotatable sleeve on said covering plate, a cam on said sleeve, a rotatable key plug carried by said tumbler-barrel casing, a spindle connecting said rotatable key plug with said rotatable sleeve, said key plug being arranged to rotate said sleeve through said spindle and to cause said cam to operate the locking mechanism, and an adjusting device operatively connecting said covering plate with said tumbler-barrel casing, said adjusting device being accessible for operation at the inner aspect of said covering plate, additional means independent of said adjusting device being provided :tor restricting the outward movement of the cylinder lock in said cylindrical member.
5. In a lock, a lock casing having Aa cylindrical member attached thereto, said cylindrical member being provided with an inner and an outer opening, a flange at the outer end of said cylindrical member, a tumblerbarrel casing, said tumbler-barrel casing and the cylindrical member being connected together for longitudinal adjustment relatively to each other, a flange at the inner end of said tumbler-barrel casing, a covering plate at the inner end of said cylindrical member, means associated with said cov* ering plate for operating the locking mechanism, a rotatable key plug carried by said tumbler-barrel casing, means operably connecting said rotatable key plug with said locking mechanism actuating means, and an adjusting device operatively connecting said covering plate with said tumbler-barrel cas-` ing, said flanges of the tumblenbarrel casing being adapted to engage said flanges of the cylindrical member for restricting the movement of said tumbler-barrel casing in an outward direction.
6. In a lock, a lock casing, a cylindrical member upon said casing, said cylinder having an inner and an outer opening, a tumbler barrel casing, said tumbler-barrel casing and the cylindrical member being connected together for longitudinal adjustment relatively to each other, a covering plate for theinner opening of said cylinder, means associated with said covering plate for operating the locking mechanism, a rotatable key plug carried by said tumbler-barrel casing, means operably connecting said key plug with said locking mechanism actuating means, an adjusting device operatively connecting said covering plate and said tumbler-barrel casing, said adjusting device being accessible for operation at the inner aspect of said 'covering plate, a flange at the inner end of the tumbler-barrel casing, a `flange at'the outer end of said cylindrical member, said lianges being engageable with each other and adapted to restrict the outward move ment of said tumbler-barrel casing, and an escutcheon plate arranged to cover the hole in the door and to embrace the outer end of said tumbler-barrel casing.
