. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT G. IRWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Floydada, in the county of Floyd and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in"Insecticide-Hold' ers, of which the following is a specification.
, This invention relates to improvements in insecticide holders having novel means for discharging theflinsecticide. b An important object of this invention is to provide an insecticide holder having a novel form of bellows which discharges air into the bottom of the insecticide holder'so as to pick up a small quantity of the insecti-v cide upon beingidischarged from the holder. A further object of this invention isto provide novel means forzdetachably securing the bellows to the holder. r
A further object of the invention is to provide an insecticide holding, and dis 'pensing receptacle provided with a' discharge spout having its inlet end arranged approximately in the center of the receptacle so that the insecticide may be readily discharged regardless of the position ofthe receptacle and without the possibility of-ac 'cidental loss of any part of the contents.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the class described which is neat in appearance, of highly simplified construction and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages. of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and. in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout thesame: v
.Figure 1 is a perspective view of an insecticide holder embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the same, and
- nates a cylindrical holder having a top 6 secured thereto by an annular threaded flange 7. A suitable washer or annular sealing element 7 is confined between the to 6 and the adjacent portion of the cylindrlcal holder. As illustrated in Fig. 2, the bellows 8 is secured to the lower portion of the Specification ofLettersPat ent. Pat nted May application filed December 22, 1919. Serial No.'34 6,76 5; v
holder through the medium-of alength of round wire 9 which has its ends twisted together, as indicated at 10, for securely con necting the body of the bellows which may be of leather, to the holder. The holder 5 is provided with abottom 11 which hasits edge portion extended'inwardly and seated within an annular recess 12 in the lower portion of the holder for securely connecting the bottom to the-holder. -The inwardly extending edge portion of thebottom 11 and the annular recess 12 within which the same is'seated form an exterior groove 13 within which the upper portion of the bellows and the wire 9 are securely seated, whereby the bellows is; securely attached to the holder and the possibility of air leaking between the bellows and the side of the holder is thereby eliminated. It is thus apparent that the inwardly extended edge portion of the bottom 11 andihe adjacent portion or the holder serve a dual function whichfis','.
first to form an attaching means forTthe bottom'of the'holder, and secondly to form a means whereby the bellows maybe attached to the holder without the possibility of leakage.
at 18, so that the bottom 14 is securely attached tothelcontractible portion of the bellows. The bottomof the holder and the bottom of the bellows are provided with" centrally arranged recessed portions 19 which form annular shoulders 20 for secure ing the ends of a retractilc coil spring 21 in position. During the outward movement of the body of the bellows air is admitted to the same through an opening 22 in the bot The bottom 14;, of thefbell'ows is provided, wlth an annular flange 15' having an inte-l A second tom l L A flap valve 23 is riveted or other- I wise secured, as indicated at 24, to the bot.- tom 14 and extends over said opening so as to close the same during the inward or discharge movement of the bellows.
The air is discharged from the bellows through the mediumof an annular series of spaced openings 25 in the bottom v11. When it is desired to use the device, the holder 1S about half filled with powder to as to cover the annularseries of openings 25. When the bellows is squeezed for forcing the air through the openings 25, a
quantity of the powderis picked up and dis- 7 charged through the nozzle or spout 26. The inner end of the nozzle 26 is arranged approximately in the center of the holder and the discharge end isslightly restricted soas to increase the velocity of the air upon being discharged, By arranging the inlet end of the discharge spout approximately in the center of the holder or receptacle, the insecticide may be conveniently discharged 7 regardless of the position of the holder.
Whether the holder isarranged with the spout extending upwardly, downwardly or horizontally, at least a portion of the holes 25 will be covered by thcinsecticide there- 1 by providing for the-passage of air through.
the powder when the holder is in use.
In causin the air to ass throu h the oowder b p D carried by the bottom of-the holder. a uniform quantity; of powder will be discharged at each operation of the bellows. It is to be understood that theform of the invention herewith shown and described is to, be taken as apreferred example of the same and that such minor changes inari rangement and construction of parts may be made as will remain within the spirit of the. invention and the scope of what is claimed. Y Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is: i H v .1 i 1. An insecticide holder including a body having a bottom provided with air inlet openings, a cylindrical bellows attaohed'to said'body and provided with a bottom,'the
. bottom of said bellows and the bottom of said body beingprovided with centrally arranged recessed portions forming a pair of annularshoulders spaced from the sides of the body and bellows, a coil spring confined between .the bottom of said bellows andthe bottom of said body and surround- 7 ing the said annular shoulders, the bottom ofsaid bellows being provided with air inlet means, and avalve for the air inlet means of said bellows.
2. A device of the class described, includ ing a body'having a groove, a bottom having its -edge portion extended inwardly and seated within said groove, one side wall of said groove and the adjacent portion. of said bottomforminga second groove, a bellows having one end portion arranged in the second-named groove, and a length of wire twisted tightly about said end portion of thebellows for securing the same within the second-named groove.
3. An insecticideholder including a body having a perforated bottomga bellows attached to the body about said bottom. and
holder and spaced from the top and bot- 7 tom of the same whereby the insecticide within the holder may be discharged regardless ofthe position of the holder, and a bellowsassociated with the holder, the bottom of said holder being provided with an annular seriesof openings surrounding the innerlend. ofthe spout and establishing communication between saidholder andthe bellows; I In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
