' WIND-CLUTCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1921.
Application filed October 31, 1919. Serial No. 334,782.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON S. DUNKnL- nnnon1a,'a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wind- Clutches,of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the invention is to provide for signs, toys and other mechanical devices to be rocked or moved, a wind clutch which obviates the necessity of changing the character of the electric current from that on which the device is adapted to operate, to that which is supplied in a particular city or town.
In providing an operating mechanism which is adapted to be propelled by the air currents set in motion by an electric fan, the speed at which the device will be operated may be varied by moving the fan toward or away from it. In this manner I am able to secure a wide variety of speeds without the necessity of employing an intricate speed-changing mechanism.
Other important and incidental objects will be brought out in the following specification, and particularly set forth in the subjoined claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved wind operated device connected to a win dew-display boat. Fig. 2 is a side view of said device and an electric fan for propelling the later. And Fig. 3 is a front view of the wheel on the operating device, which is turned by the currents of air set in motion by the fan.
Throughout the specification and drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates a suitable base upon which is mounted a standard 2. To the latter is pivotally secured a lug 3which projects downwardly from the middle portion of the bottom of a boat 4 constructed for window display purposes.
The rear end of the boat 4 is supported by one end of a horizontal bar 5 whose other end is secured to a vertically disposed connecting rod 6, At its upper end the a er .is
pivotally secured, by means of a wrist pin 7, to the face of a gear wheel 8 fast on a stub shaft 9 journaled in the top portion of a standard 10 secured to the base 1.
The gear 8 is in mesh with a pinion 11 fast on a shaft 12 that projects through a hole in the upper portion of the standard 10, tightly to receive on its outer end a fan wheel 13 adapted to be rotated by the air currents produced by a portable electric fan 14 of any suitable type.
The fan 14, being portable, is adapted to be moved upon the base 1 sufiiciently near the wheel 13 to cause it to be rotated by the air currents which are set in motion by the fan. The speed at which the fan wheel 13 1s rotated, will be determined by the proximity of the electric fan to it, with the result that the boat will receive a rocking movement which corresponds to that which is given a large ship by the waves. Upon moving the fan toward or away from the fan wheel 13, the speed at which the boat is rocked may be readily varied.
It is thus seen that the electric fan 14, operating in conjunction with the fan wheel 13, will provide a wind clutch that will propel not only a window displaydevice, but a toy or any other object, not too large, that it is desired to turn, rock or oscillate. It will also be apparent that the boat operating mechanism can be readily installed and operated without attention being paid to the 'character'of the electric current supplied in a particular town or city. This is due to the fact that any electric fan operating on such current, can be utilized to propel the mechanism which imparts motion to the window display device. The electric fan not only operates the device, but in addition will cool the window or store in which it is placed.
Having described my invention, I claim: 1. The combination with a base, of two standards mounted upon said base, one of said standards movable toward and away from the other standard, an electric fan mounted 'on the movable standard, and a wind-propelled mechanism mounted on the on a iv t, of a standa d, a tran verse shaft journaled in said standard, a wind wheel tached to the said device to move the latter fast on one end of said shaft and a pinion on its pivot. 10 fast on its other end, a stub shaft journaled In testimony whereof I have hereunto set in said standard, a gear on said stub shaft my hand this 29th day of October, 1919.
in mesh with said pinion, a wrist pin on said MILTON S DUNKELBERGER gear, and a connecting rod having one end pivotally secured by said wrist pin to the Witness:
gear, and its other end adapted to be at HOWARD S. SMITH.
