F. T. CLUGG. WASHING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED .IAN.28, 1920. 1,376,255. Patented Apr. 26, 1921.
; I .Z' \\\\\\\\.|l|]1ll//f /2 iiIIIIIIII IIIII. I I' A? UNITED ,STAIES` FLORENCE T. CLUGG, 0F SPENCER, WISCONSIN.
W ASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. v Patented Aprf 26, 1921.
Application filed January 28, 1920. VSerial No. 354,733.
To all who/m t may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORENCE T. CLUGG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spencer, in the county of Marathon jand State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inWYashing- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to washing machines, its principal object being to provide aV washing machine having scrub brushes or other cleaning elements supported therein for cooperation with the usual agitator in performing the washing operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide'a washing machine which includes a plurality of removable brushes or other cleaning elements which are arranged to permit one or more of the brushes to be removed when they become worn and new ones substituted therefor.
Another general object of the invention is to provide a washing machine which is simple in construction, consist-s of few parts, and which may be manufactured and sold at a minimum cost.
With the above and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construction and arrangement, operation, and speciiic features all of which may be enlarged upon and are explicitly deined in the appended claims.
On the drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a washing machine embodying my improvements;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the machine having the cover removed;
Fig. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the central cleaning brush. V
Referring in detail to the drawino wherein like characters of reference designate like parts in all the views, the numeral 5 designates a receptacle provided with a re'- movable lid 6. An agitator 10 is rotatably supported in the lid 6 and is rotated through the medium of a drive means designated as at 11. The agitator and the drive means form no part of the invention but are shown for the purpose of illustrating the application of my invention.
The inner face of the side walls of the receptacle 5 is provided with a plurality of parallel vertical dove tail grooves 12 ineach of whichfrem'ovable brushes 13 are engaged. These brushes 13 are retained against longitudinal movement by set screws 14C carried by plates 15 mounted on the receptacle 5 and passing through the walls of the receptacle and fitting into sockets formed in the uppermost brushes.
The bottom of the receptacle is provided with a central opening 16 and extending radially from this opening 16 upon the inner face of the bottom are a plurality of dove tail grooves 17 which extend to the outer edge of the bottom. Brushes 18 are insertible in these vgrooves from the inner! ends. rlhe grooves 17 in the bottom do not register with the vertical grooves 12 and therefore the brushes 18 are out of alinement or disposed in staggered relation to the brushes 13. A -circular brush 19 also of scrub brush fiber and provided with a backing plate 19 is placed in the central opening 16 and is so disposed that the peripheral edge of the back of the brush engages the ends Vof the brushes 18 thus preventing longitudinal movement of the same. A plate 20 is secured to the under face of the bottom of the receptacle by securing screws 21. This plate underlies the brush 19 and carries a set screw 22 which extends through the center of the plate and into a threaded socket formed in the back of the brush to retain the brush in position. This plate also carries an upstanding pin 23 engageable in an opening 24 inthe back of the brush to retain the brush against rotation while the clothes are being cleaned.
From the disclosure it will be manifest that I have provided a washing machine wherein the scrubbing element may be readily removed from the receptacle when the same becomes worn and new ones substituted therefor.
- The structure shown and described is a practical embodiment of the invention but it will be understood that the same may be modiiied in many respects, and that'such limits of modification are only governed by the subjoined claims.
What is claimed is :--v
1. A washing machine including a receptacle provided with an opening in the bottom thereof and further provided with dove tail grooves in the inner face `of the bottom radiating from the ropening and vertical dove tail grooves upon the inner face ofthe Walls of the receptacle, a brush removably engaged in each of the grooves, and a ybrush "which 'extend radially from the opening,
the side Walls of the receptacle also being provided with the longitudinal dove ltail grooves positioned in staggered relation to the grooves inthe bottom, cleaning elements insetible in the radiall disposed grooves from the central opening, and a brush closing the opening, the edges of the back of the latter brush abutting the inner ends of theV radially disposed brushes, and brushes removably engaged in the grooves in the side walls of the receptacle.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature in presenceof two Witnesses.
