Description
V. RIGSBYH.
MAGNETO CONTACT.
APPLICATION HLED MAR. 9. 1920.
1,376, 162,` Patented Apr. 26, 1921.
WITNESSES l/V VE N TOR I UNITED STATES PATENT ortica-1v vrRGTL R-IGSBY, or
MAGNETO- Application filed March 9,
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, VIRGIL RiesBY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Hemphilhin the vcounty of Sabine and State ofTeXas, have invented a new and Improved Magneto-Contact, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This-invention relates to improvements in magneto contacts,l particularly to a contact which may be used to advantage with the usual type of Ford magneto. An object of the invention is to'provide a contact which may be quickly and easily removed, cleaned, and replaced, and also one which will not make short circuits between the Contact and the magneto.
With. these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features ofconstruction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described. and pointed out in l the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in vertical cross section showing the device in operative position in connection with a Ford magneto.
. Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
A magneto casing 1 is furnished with an opening 1 to receive a tubular casing 2, which is provided with an annularflange 3 between its ends. The casing 2 at its inner end lits the opening 1 and the flange 3 forms a shoulder against the casing. The flange 3 is secured to the casing 1 by screws 4 projecting through the flange and screwed into the casing. The tubular casing 2 is vpreferably made of fiber or other non-con- ".ducting material, thus obviating the possibility of a short circuit through' the screws 4.
' The tubular casing 2 is provided with internal longitudinal key-ways 6 to receive external keys 8 on a tubular barrel 7 This barrel 7 is externally flanged at its lower end 9, and bears against the inner end ofthe casing 2 to secure the barrel in the casing.
The keys 8 are of general wedge shape longitudinally and the key-ways 6 are correspondingly shaped to receive them, so as to limit the longitudinal inward movement of the barrel in the casing.
The barrel 7 is internally screw-threaded at its upper end to receive the externally Specification of Letters Patent.
HEMPHILL, TEXAS.
CONTACT.
1920. Serial No. 364,573.
Patented Apr. 26, 1921,',
10. A vertical guide pin 11 carried by the.
plug l0 projects downwardly, and has a spherical enlargement at its lower end.
A contact plug 12 is formed with a socket 13 which incloses the enlarged end 14 of thepin 11, and the plug 12 at its upper end has an internal annular flange 15 to prevent thel u plug from slipping ofl1 of the pin 11.
A. screw-threaded binding post 16 is pro# vided on the outer end of the plug 10, and
receives a jam nut 17 which is screwed' down upon the wire 18 to hold same tightly 1n place on the plug 10.
l The plug 12 is maintained in ContactI with the lead 20 of the magneto 21 by means of the spring 19 located around the pin between the plug 10 and contact 12, ex'- erting a continuous downward pressure on the latter.
It will be understoodthat by merely removing the plug 10, the Contact plug 12 i. may be readlly lifted out, examined, and
quickly replaced. In the event that any foreign matter collects on or about the' lead 20 it may be removed without difficultyv while the plug is out.
lation of the contact by means of the fiber Another advantage is found in the insu-v casing, the danger of short circuits .betweenv A' the Contact and the magneto casing being completely obviated.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form of the Vparts described withoutdeparting from my invention, and' hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty'to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.A
I claim:
1.' A device of the character stated, comprising a non-conducting tubular casing, a tubular barrel secured within the casing, a
guide lpin within the casing, and a movable contact carried by the guide pin.
- 2. A device of the character stated, come i prising a tubular casing, a tubular barrel secured within the casing, a guide pin with-` in the barrel, an enlargement on the end of the pin and a Contact plug having a socket therein receiving the enlarged end of the pin. 4 1.
3. A device of the character stated, comprising a tubular casing having key-ways therein, a tubular barrel within the casing,
gagng the end of the casing, a
external keys on the barrel fitting 'the key- Ways in the casing, an external annular lange on the lower end of the barrel enplug in the outer end of the barrel, a guide pin on 'the plug within the barrel and a movable Contact carried by a pin.
4. A cleve of the character stated, com
prising a non-conducting tubular casing, a barrel Wnn the casing, means securing the barrel against movement Whn ehe casing, a plug screwed into #ne outer end of the barrel, a guide pin carried by the plug, an enlarged end on the guide pin, a movable Contact having a cylindrical socket therein 15 receiving the enlarged end of the pin, an annular internal flange in the upper end f 0f the socket conning the enlarged end of the pin Within the socket, a spring; around the pin between the plug and the movable 20 Contact exerting pressure on the Contact, and means for Securing the device to the casing of a magneto.
