MORTIMER A.,HOWE, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR TO PIONEER BINDERY AND PRINTING COMPANY, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON, A CORPORATION.
BANK-CHECK, RECORD-BOOK, AND BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 9, 1920. Serial No. 402,095.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MORTIMER A. HOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of- Washington, (whose post-oflice address is 948 Commerce street, in the said city of Tacoma,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bank-Checks, Record-Books, and Binders, of wh1ch the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to bank-check books in which provision is made for keeping a regular and systematic record of each check as drawn and issued. It directly pertains to my former Patent Number 775,821, issued November 22, 1904, and is a further improvement on said patent. The commonly used method of keeping check-book records consists of a check-book in which each check is printed with a blank form of stub attached, on which the record of the check is entered at the time the check is drawn and given out, the line dividing the check and stub being perforated, so the check may be easily torn from its stub.
The objects of my invention are substantially the same as in my former patent, first, to provide a more economical, systematic and convenient form of bank-check and record bookthan the stub-book form now commonly used; second, to provide a bank-check record book anda bank-check book separated from each other but within one binder, and third, to provide a more simple means for attaching and detaching the bankrheck-record book and check-book together within one binder than is provided in my former invention.
I attain these objects by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 represents a view of my improved record-book, check-book, and binder open for use. Fig. 2 is an edge view ofFig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the record-book closed against its front cover and showing its back cover attached to the binder, also the check-book detached, to show the newly invented means of attaching each to the binder. Fig. 4 is a full size section through the back cover of the binder on line 44, and shows the metallic device of my new improvement as used to secure the recordbook and check-book within the binder.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts in the several views.
My invention consists of a binder 1 with a stiff or flexible back in which is inclosed a detachable record-book 2 and check-book 3 as in my former patent. The record-book 1s deslgned to have its pages suitably ruled for entering the record of each check regularly as drawn. It is preferably designed to have the right-hand page ruled for this purpose and so divided by vertical columns that each check can be recorded in systematlc and numerical order. The left-hand page is designed to be used for entering special details and memorandum.
The check-book 3 is made of a number of the usual form of bank-checks. In my invention they are made with short stubs 4 so punched as to' fit onto the metal posts 5 where they are held firmly in place by the stem screw 6 the same as in my former patent. Each check is perforated on the line 7 so it may be detached from its stub when drawn.
My new improvement consists of a more simple, effective and economical method of attaching and securing the record-book 2 and the check-book 3 within the binder covers 1. To do this I use a thin metallic strip 8 so formed and fixed on the inside of the back cover of the binder 1 as to receive and hold the record-book 2 within the binder 1 and to so secure the stem screw posts 5 in place to receive the check-book thereon within the binder 1.
The stem-screw posts 5 are made with thin square heads 9. Square upsets 10 with central holes therein are made in the metallic strip 8 to receive the posts 5 and square heads 10 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. A long shallow upset 11 is made in strip 8 to receive the thin flexible back cover 12 of the record book 2 as shown in Figs. 3and 4. The metal strip 8 with the posts 5 inserted in place is then fixed to the back cover of the binder 1 by means of eyelets 13, or other suitable means, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4. The square heads 9 of stem-screw posts 5 are. now tightly fixed within the s uare upsets 10 to prevent turning and the c eck-book 3 may be put thereon and fixed in place by the stem screws 6.
The record-book 2 is made with a li ht flexible cover of Manila paper or ot er strongmaterial, and the back cover 12 is slipped under the long shallow upset 11 in the metallic strip 8 as ShOWIl in Fig. 3. On the left hand cover of the binder is provided a flat metallic tongue 14:, suitably riveted thereto to be used as a book-mark and alsoto hold the back cover 12 in place under the metal strip 8 securely within the binder, 1.
By means of the metallic stri 8 havin the upsets formed therein as d escribed, obtain a more effective and economical met'hod of making my, bank-check, recordbook and binder. It will be observed the metallic tongue 14 is located centrally on the edge of the record-book to be most eflI'ec-- It will tive in holdin the book in place. be further notlced that the binder is made greater in size than the books inclosed therein to admit the metallic strip 8 to be fixed in place and to more completely inclose and protect the record-book and check-pad.
It will be understood that in practice many banks wish to print the names, of their customers on their checks, and the custom in the past has been for the bank tobuy large being necessary. This avoids delay in'sending away for checks, saves express charges, etc.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. An office check and record book, comprising a book of checks or the like, formed of a multiple of checks or pad of checks, a record-book to contain the record of checks andbound in a flexible cover, and a binder having an upset'metallic strip fixed at its middle to receive the rear cover of said ecord-book, a book-mark clam at the outer edge of the binder to hold t e front cover and leaves of said record-book and so operate as to 'secure'the rear cover within said metallic strip at the middle of said binder,
the binder extending beyond the recordbook to form a base for the body of checks and means for detachably securing the pad of checks on said extended part of said binder.-
oflice check and record-book comprising a'multiple of checks or the like, a record-book to contain the record of checks andbound in a flexible cover, and a binder having a metallic binding strip near its middle, said binding strip so upset as to form a slip to receive and hold the rear flexible cover of said record-book, a book-mark clamp oppositely mounted from said upset .slip to keep said flexible back within said and set forth.
