Description

J. J. McKEONE.
FLUE BLOCK.
. APPLICATION FILED AUG-2, 1920.

Specification of Letters Patent.
-Patented Apr. 26, 1921.
.Application filed August 2, 1920. Serial No. 400,816.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoI-IN J. MoKnoNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, in the county of Washington and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flue-Blocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings.
This invention relates to improvements in flashing construction and more particularly to a flashing construction wherein the flashing cooperates with the wall to which it is applied in such a manner as to prevent its withdrawal from the completed structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a chimney wall. or the like and in that portion thereof extending above the roof line, grooves having their inner ends enlarged, these enlarged portions being adapted to receive an enlarged roll formed on the end of a flashing strip.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a block having formed therein a peculiarly advantageous type of flashing receiving groove which enables a ready and efiicient conjunction therewith of flashing to prevent rain water and water caused by melting snows and ice from entering the conjunction of the block with the roof.
These and other objects I attain by the construction sho vn in the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in sec tion showing a block and flashing constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the flashing strip removed, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view showing the manner of mounting the flashing in the grooves of the block.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 17 designates a block of a chimney or wall structure which proects above the level of the roof. This block is provided in each of the side faces thereof with longitudinally extending grooves 18 provided interiorly with an enlargement 19 approximately circular.
The groove 18 is adapted for the reception of one end of a flashing member 21, this member comprising a portion 22 adapted to over lie the roofing material of the roof provided at its upper end with an angular extension 23, which extends into the groove 18, such angular extension being provided upon its end with a rolled portion 24 having the end thereof spaced from the adjacent portion of the angular portion 23 to provide a space 25 communicating with the interior of the roll 24. The interior of the roll 24 will be packed with oakum or some similar substance saturated with some water proof adhesive compound such as roofing cement. As the grooves 18 extend entirely through the sides of the block it will be obvious that the flashing 21 may be inserted at the ends of the grooves and shifted to the proper position when it may be suitably attached to the roof and the grooves 18 packed in practically the same manner as described for packing the interior of the roll 24.
it will. be obvious from the foregoing that a flashing constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the ease of its manufacture and because of its efficiency in 'ore venting water from passing through the joints of a vall or flue with the roof, and it is likewise obvious that the construction thereof as hereinbefore set forth is capable of some change without departing from the spirit of my invention. 1 accordingly do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is that The combination with a block provided in the outer face of a side wall thereof with a transversely extending horizontal groove, said groove being enlarged as to its inner portion, of a flashing member comprising a body portion provided at its upper end with an angular extension adapted to enter said groove, said angular extension being provided upon its inner end with a hollow roll of larger size than said groove and adapted to enter the enlargement of said groove, said roll being provided with a longitudinally extending opening communicating with the center thereof, thereby permitting the insertion therein of a packing medium, said roll preventing removal of said flashing through said groove.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.-
