LEATHER-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 19, 1921.
Application filed October 23, 1919. Serial No. 332,721.
Quebec, in the Province of Quebec, Domin-- ion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in leather presses, and its main object is to provide adevice of this character whereby the coarse leather is pressed an polished inone operation, thus saving time and labor and reducing the cost of manufacture.
Another object is to provide a machine simple and particularly cheap of construction.
The invention will be better understood with the aid of the accompanying drawings in which Flgure 1 1s a side elevatlon of the ma chine.
Fig. 2 is afront elevation.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the machine on line AA of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the machine on line BB of Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
In the drawings, 1 is a base having an upwardly projecting over-hanging head 2, and 3 is a horizontal channel provided at one end thereof with an enlarged portion 4. Communicating with said enlarged portion 4 is a hole 5 which also-communicates with a vertical hole 6.
7 is a shaft suitably journaled in the said horizontal channel 3, which shaft projects through the channel to the rear of the base 1. The forward end of said shaft is provided with an eccentric 8 which turns in suitable bearings in the enlarged portion 4 of the channel. A gear 9 is rlgidly mounted on the rear end of the said shaft, and a block 10 is adapted to saddle the eccentric 8 and move in the hole 5.
In the hole 6 is movably mounted the cylinder 11, said cylinder being adapted to sit or rest on the block 10. The cylinder 11 is provided with an inlet port 12 to permit the entrance of the compressed oil, air, or water into the bottom of said cylinder which will actuate the plunger 13, on which is is hollow and provided with zig-zag channels 16 in which steam circulates, entering through the opening 17. The object is to heat this jaw in order that it will heat-up the leather and give to the same a polished surface. The jaw 15 is automatically swung on its pivot as indicated in Fig. 1 by a centrally fulcrumedlever 18 which is pivotally connected at one end to said jaw 15 by the link 19; and 20 is a downwardly projecting and pivoted rod provided at the other end of said lever 18 and having at its lower end a roller 21 which engages the eccentric channel 22 which is provlded at one side of the gear 9. Thus when the gear 9 revolves the eccentric channel will actuate the lever 18 and tilt the jaw 15.
In the rear of the base or frame 1 is provided an upwardly projecting bracket 23 in which is suitably journaled the shaft '24 on which shaft is loosely mounted the pulley 25. A clutch 26 is slidably mounted on said shaft, and a gear 27 is also mounted thereon, and adapted to co-act with the gear 9 mounted on the shaft 7 The clutch 26 is operated by the lever 28 which, in turn, is operated by a lever 29' pivotally connected at 30 in the bracket 23. Lever 29 is provided at one end with a weight 31, and has connected to it a cord 32 which passes over the pulley 33 and which terminatesv in an operating part 34. The lever 28 is pivotally connected intermediate thereof to said lever 29 by the short link 35, and 36 is a pin pivotally connected to the,
lower end of said lever 28 and slidably the pin 36 out of the hole 38 in the gear 9' and thereby unlocksthe gear, the operation of lever 29 simultaneously .sliding the clutch 26 into engagement with the pulley 25,,to impart motion to the shaft 24 and the gear 27. The gear 27 will revolve the gear 9 and eccentric 8.- thus lifting the block 10 which carries the movable cylinder 11, plunger 13 and-jaw 14. Simultaneously the eccentric channel 22 on the gear 9 will move lever 18 into the horizontal position indicated in do-tted lines in, Fig. 1 of the drawings. Therefore the mechanical action is to raise the jaw 14 so that it will contact with the jaw 15 when the pressure oil, air or water-is forced through the port 12 in the cylinder 11 which raises the plunger 13 and compresses the 'aw 14 against the jaw 15. The leather whic is disposed between the jaws is thus pressed and given a polished surface by the heated jaw 15.
To remove the pressed leather from between the jaws, the operation is reversed, which lowers the jaw 14 and the cylinder 11 into their primitive. position an tilts the jaw 15 in order to provide a wider space to easily remove or insert the leather.
