Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 12, 1918. Serial No. 249,456.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN L. L. KnooK, a citizen of ,the United States, residing'at Proctor, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements 1n Riveting-lvlachines, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to riveting ma chine or device which is of simple construction and by means of which riveting operations can be effected either manually or by power. I

Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes a bar having a head portion 13 to which 1s jointed, by means of a pin 14, the upper ends of links 15 jointed at their lower ends, by means of pins 16, to a fork 17 at the forward end of a lever 17. The head 13 1s provided with a recess for the reception of a sliding pin or plunger 13 carrying at 1ts lower end a riveting block 19 to which the fork 17 is ointed by a pin 20. The riveting block 19 has a concave recess in its lower 21 passes through a hole in a resistance bar 23 to which is pivoted, by a P111411, a locking lever 24 having a projection or nose portion 25 adapted to be recelved 1n any one of a series of notches 26 1n the lower part of said shank 22. The hole in the resistance bar through which the shank 22 passes is preferably somewhat 'fflaring upwardly, as
shown, forthe easy insertion of said shank,
and the surface 42 on the bar 23 against which the rounded upper end of the lever 24 works is preferably in the arc of a circle of which the pin 11 is the centerso that no pressure on saidbar will release the lockmg lever 24.
A suitable spring, herein shown as a coil spring projection may be entered. Adjustably attached, as by a set screw 39, to the bar 23, is a rivet ng block 28 having a concave recess Patented Apr. 19, 1921.

Adjustably attached to the supporting bar 12 is a steadying device cooperating with the steadying bar 21 and preferablyconsisting of a steadying and spacing pin 31, said pin being threaded for the reception of nuts 32 and 33 by which it is fixed in with a slot 35 by which said pin is steadied in place in different positions of adjustment or the block 12. By adjusting the riveting block 28, and correspondingly adjusting the spacing pin-31, the machine will be adapted for operation with plates or the like which are to be riveted together and which have differently spaced holes. The steadying and spacing pin 31 need not necessarily enter holes in the work, and the machine might be properly steadied by other 'means, cooperating with the bar 21, than said pin, as for example, by making the nut 32 on the work. 7 7

' 16 and20 the headl3 is preferably provided with shoulders 13 against which the rounded upper ends of the links 15 work, and the fork 17 is also preferably provided with shoulders 17* against whlch the rounded lower ends of said links work. Also theblock 19 is preferably formed with shoulders 19 against which the rounded front end portions of the'fork 17 work.

When this riveting operation has been performed the locking leVerEZLmay here-v leased from the shank 22 of the bar 21, and said bar andthe spacing pin 31 be withdrawn from the previously formed holes 37 in the plates 38, and the riveting device may then be adjusted to a new posi tion relative to said plates for a new, riveting operation.
l/Vhile I have herein shown and'described a preferred. form of my invention the said invention is not to be understood as being limitedsto. the particular form thereof, or to the details of construction, herein set forth;
a leading feature of my invention residing in the means'whereby the machine may be properly mounted inplace inthe work in such a manneras' to set the rivets in differently spaced rivet holes, and this feature may be used in connection with different means than the toggle device for operating the movable riveting block'19 herein set forth as, for example, by hydraulic pressure appliedto the pin or plunger 18. As hereinbefore stated the operating lever 17 maybe actuated manually or by power ap plied in any suitable manner, and this might mclude the use of hydraulic or pneumatic Having: thus descrihed my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent: a

A riveting machine or device comprising the combination with asupporting bar having a recessed part, of toggle links jointed to said bar adjacent said recessed part, a pin or plungerworking in said recessed part and carrying arivetingblock, a forked lever to which said links are ointed and the forkedaforwardtoggle part ofiwhich lever has jointed connections with said riveting block, a resistanace bar provided with an aperture, a second riveting block attached to .saidwresistance bar, a? steadying bar attached to said supporting bar, locking means for said steadying bar, and additionaljsteadying means attached to: said supporting bar. l

A riveting machine or device comprising the combination with a supportinghar having a recessed part, of toggle links joint ed to said bar adjacent said recessed part, a. pin or plunger working in said recessed part and carrying a riveting block, a forked lever to which saidlinks are jointed and the forked toggle part of which lever has jointed connections with said riveting block, a resistance bar provided with anaperture, a second riveting blockattached to said re sistance bar, a, steadying bar attached to said supporting bar and having a shank passing through said resistance bar, a spring-pressed lever for locking said steadying bar, and a steadying pin. attached to said supporting bar at a distance from said 7 steadying bar. v
4. In a riveting machine or device, the combination with a supporting bar and a resistancebar, of properly mounted opposone of which is movable and the other of which is fixed to said resistance bar, means for operating said movable riveting block, and means for holding the riveting machine in place onthe work for riveting operations, said holding means comprising a plurality of pins attached to said holding bar and adapted to pass through rivet holes in the work and engage adjustably mounted on said holding bar and said fixed riveting block beingadjustably with fixed and movable rivetinghlocksand a stationary head, said head and said movable rivetingblockhaving shoulders, atogs gle device comprising. a fork having shoulders, links pivotedtojsaid head andfork and having rounded ends working against said shoulders on Said head ,and fork, said fork having roundedends working against said shoulders on said riveting block, said shoulders preventing shearing strains on the toggle pivotpins.
