Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 19, 192i.
Application filed February 5, 1920. Serial No. 356,470.
Vother cheap grade oils, and has further for its object to provide an apparatus that is simple, substantial, land in which all the parts are readily accessible to provide renewal and cleansing` as may be necessary, and the invention has for a further. object to provide an improved method for burning liquid fuels. rlhe invention consists of the construction, the combination and in detalls and arrangements of the parts, an embodiment of which invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described and claimed herein.
Figure 1 is a perspective of a small heating stove partly broken away to illustrate the inclosed improved oil burner.
. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional vieiv diagrammatically showing the combined apparatus for burning the oil.
Fig. 3 is a perspective of a retort member and burner tip.
In the preferred form of the apparatus for practising the improved method for generating combustible gases from liquid fuels, there is provided a closed chamber 2 having a suitable cover or top portion 3, and Within this chamber there is provided a Wall 0r partition t forming a relatively small compartment 5 With an outlet in its bottom to which is connected an outlet pipe or con.
duit 6. At a suitable height in the small compartment there is entered an oil supply pipe 't' that is, preferably, provided with a control valve 8 from Which extends a connection to a suitable source of supplyV of fuel not shown.
The outlet duct or pipe 6 is extended into a horizontal retort portion or tube 9 the end of Which is shown as provided With a cap 10 or is otherwise suitably closed, and in the upper side of this cap there is a circumferential split 11 and in the lower portion of the cap there is an outlet hole 12. Preferably, the chamber 2 is provided with suitable legs 2a for elevating it at a suitable height above a supporting' portion as a grate or bottom of a stove in which the chamber 2 may be mounted.
, Such a stove is represented at S in the form of a small heating structure through the Walls of which the oil supply pipe 7 1s extended.
:Below` the retort pipe 9 there is provideda basin or receptacle 18 that may be suitably connected to or formed with the body structure of the chamber 2 as may be desired, and a suitable quantity of oil can be initially supplied toy this basin 13 by opening the valve 8 so that oil will discharge into the compartment 5 and iioiv from the bottoni of the same into the outlet pipe 6 and thence through the 1)ipe or conductor 9 and out of the oil hole 12 in the bottom orn the closure 10. The retort member With its closure 10 is, preferably, located a desired distance below the bottoni of the chamber 2. The oil supplied as above mentioned to the basin 13 can be ignited and this Will result in heating the retort 9 and chamber and the oil vvill be gasiied so as to be discharged through the gas outlet 1l.
To facilitate the combustion of the gasified oil and to supply pressure for forcing the same out of the nozzle opening 11, I prefer to provide means for maintaining a predetermined quantity of Water in the chamber 2, and this may be done through means of a Water supply pipe l5 suitably connected to the chamber 2 and leading from a reservoir or other source of supply 16 which is provided with an automatically acting means as a valve 17 for holding the Water to a predetermined quantity in the chamber 2 during the operation of the burner.
The automatic control means may include valve 17 With a lever arm 18 on its stem this being connected to a Heat 19 lwhich will rise and fall with variation of Water level in the reservoir 16, the latter, preferably, being so arranged that the level of the Water .in the reservoir and in the chamber 2 will be approximately uniform. To the valve there is connected a supply pipe 20.
ln the operation of the burner after the oil has been initially retorted by burning a small quantity of oil in the pan or basin 13,
the result of which is to heat the Water in the chamber 2, steam produced from the same will pass over into the small compartment 5 and thence through the retort 9 and out of the gas outlet 11 so that the steam miXes with the gas as it is generated in the retort 9 from the oil.
Loss of Water due to evaporation and discharge of the steam therefrom through the burner outlet 1l is constantly replaced by the automatic means above mentioned.
It has been found that the oil in the pan 13 can be ignited Without any resultant deposit of carbon if there is first placed in the pan or basin 13 a small quantity of Water suii'icient to float the oil that may be discharged thereonto by opening the valve l8 and coming from the loil outlet l2.
F rom the above it Will be seen that l have provided an improved burner comprising means for producing steam in a closed chamber the steam being utilized in combination With combustible gases produced by the retorting of oil in a retort member through which latter the steam prdduced in the steam chamber is caused to mi); with the gases trom the oil.
During combustion the flames produced will pass freely from below the bozttom o'l the chamber Q'and rise about the side surface thereof as indicated by the iame lines F.
' Various changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
VVhat is claimed is:
l. ln ai oil burning apparatus, a closed steam chamber having an oil compartment, means for supplying oil to the compartment, means for automatically supplying Water toi the chamber proper, and a retort connected to the oil compartment to receive oil and steam therefrom, the retort disposed under the steam chamber to generate steam from the Water therein.
2. In an oil burning apparatus, a closed steam chamber having an oil compartment,
means for supplying oil to the compartment, means for automatically supplying Water to the chamber proper, a retort connected to the oil compartment to receive oil and steam therefrom, the retort disposed under the steam chamber to generate steam Y from the Water therein, and a basin disposed beloW the retort to hold osil for initially heating the retort by combustion.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciiication.
JAY JENKINS.
