SELF-CLEANING TYPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 19, 1921.
Application filed February 24, 1920. Serial No. 360,733.
To all whom. it may concernk Be it known that I, ELBERT B. Home, a citizen of the United States, residing at Castleford, in the county of Twin Falls, State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Cleaning Type, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom anying drawing.
y invention relates to type used for printing, both in press work and in type writers. It has for its object to make the type self cleaning. I attain this object by providing clear passages or openings either through the type body or in the sides thereof, which permit particles of ink, paper, dust and the like to pass through, and fall away from the operative portions of the type.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein -Figure 1 is an isometric projection showing a typewriter type head carrying the letter G in upper and lower case style;
Fig. 2 is aside View of the same;
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing modified forms of clearance openings in the letter E.
In the drawings, referring especially to- Figs. 1 and 2, 1 is the type body, 7 the swinging type bar of usual construction, and 2 and 3 are the type faces of upper case G and lower case g respectively. Each of these has openings commencing within the edges of the type face and continued through the body 1 to points of exit in the side or bottom thereof. Thus the opening 4, tapering into the body, terminates in two exit passages 5 and 6 which ass downwardly and discharge through t e back face of the body 1. The side of the type face is further cleared by providing an inclined channel 8 commencing at the type face and broadening as it starts downward to discharge through the side of the body. This permits lateral expansion of any mass entering the face, as the inner edge of channel 8 is below the face of the type.
The type face 3, on the other hand, has, for illustration, two laterally discharging openings 11 and 13 into which the type openings 10 and 12 merge, as well as a lateral channel 9 similar to the channel 8 and for the same pur ose.
In Fig. 3, the letter upper case, has two through passages 18 and 19 extending to and discharging through the back of the body 1, and a lateral channel 21 similar to the channels 8 and 9 already described. The companion type face e, lower case, has a generally circular contour, and it suflices to carry its inner face openings 17 down through a single tubular discharge passage 20 to the back of body 1. The cross bar of the type face thus becomes a bridge, leaving suiiicient space for lateral expansion beneath it without a lateral channel.
What I claim is 1. A type for typewriting machines and the like having a body carrying on its face a printing type and having formed in itself through passages extending from the inner edges of the type face to discharge points on a non-printing surface of the body, said body being beveled away from the character edges of the type and all passages or channels through said body being so constructed as to permit constant expansion and consequent discharge of any material entering the type face in use.
2. A type for typewriting machines and the like having a body carrying on its face a printing type and having formed in itself through passages extending from the inner edges of the type face to discharge points on a non-printing surface of the body, together with a lateral discharge channel extending from the side of the type face, outside the edges thereof, said body being beveled away from the character edges of the type and all passages or channels through said body being so constructed as to permit constant expansion and consequent discharge of any material entering the type face in use.
3. Atype for typewriting machines and the like having a body carrying on its face a printing type and having formed in itself through passages extending from the inner edges of the type face to discharge points on a non-printing surface of the body, together with a lateral discharge channel extending from the side of the'type face, outexpansion and consequent discharge of any.
side the edges thereof, said lateral channel material entering the type face in use. -10 being cut down Where it meets the outline of In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
5 from the same, said body being beveled away from the character edgesof the type and. Witnesses: I all passages or channels through said body J. G. STEPHENS, being so constructed as to permit'constant W; G. Amos.
the type face to permit lateral discharge 7 ELBERT R. HOBBS
