Specificationof Letters Patent. v Patented 19, 1921.
Application filed April 17, 1920. Serial No. 374,525.
' To all it may concern Be it known that I, EMANUEL F. SHIPMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvanla, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Tool-Bags for Linemen.
This invention relates to collapsible canvas tool bags for linemen, and one'of the primary objects of my invention resides in the provision of an improved toolbag-which is of simple and stout construction and which Another object of the-invention'resides' in the provision of an improved tool bag having a supporting ,lmeans so arranged that when the bag is hung from a pm, step, or
the like, the bag will partially collapse, if
I thatthe bag comprises a bottom 7, preferably i the bag is abutting the adjacent structure,
or if the bag hangs free, it will assume an angular position,- in either case rendering the contents of the'bag more accessible and facilitating the return of tools after use.
Anotherpbject of the invention resides in the provislon of an improved bag which,
when completed, cannot be turned inside out.
The foregoing, together with such other objectsas may hereinafter appear, or are inci ent to my invention, I obtain by means of a construction which I have illustrated in accompanying drawpreferred form in the ings, wherein Figure 1 is' a partial' side elevation and section of a tool bag'embodying myimprovemerits; Fig. 2 isfa side elevation of a detail of my invention; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a sectiontaken through'another portion of the bag to illustrate another detail+ofmy improvement. r
Referring now to Flg. 1, it wlll be seen composed of wood, or other suitable nonconducting material; the side 8'preferably composed of a single piece of canvas; the h'andlei)v forcarrying the bag; and the loo 10 by means of which the bag is supporte A A hoop 11 is provided at the to of the bag.
--The' b ag,is made as follows: heelongituindicated at 15.
dinal edges ofthe canvas are sewed together forming the canvas into a cylinder which is turned insldefout. The bottom 7 is then inserted into an end of thecylinder and a rope 12 is tied aroundthe end of the canvas, forcing the same into the groove 13 formed in the periphery of the bottom 7, the rope being then stapled or otherwise secured in position. The canvas is then turned right side out, the hoop 11 placed therein-and the upper end of the bag folded or lapped over for a considerable distance, the lappin portions being stoutly stitched immediate y be ow the hoop 11, asindicated at 14 and also t the bottom of the lapped-over portion, as
At diametrically opposite points metallic eyelets 16 are provided. These eyelets are located over apertures in the canvas wall and are secured in proper position by means 'of a heavy cord 17 which is spirally wound around the eyelets and secured through the canvases indicated in'Figs. 2 and The eyelets are 'located'just below the stitching 14 and when covered in the manner described they are completely insulated and at the same-time securely fastened.
On one side of the bag, I provide a pair of eyelets 18 through which I'pass the ends of the rope 10, such ends being. knotted in the interior of the bag to prevent the ends from pulling out. The hooprll is smaller indi-' ameter than the bottom 7 so I that when the hoop. is sewed in place, the bag cannot be I turned inside out. f
. When the bag is suspended from the loo -1O inthe clear, the bottom of the bag wifi swing inwardly bythe action of-gravity, I
= :The bag-is made with a diameter such the bag may/bepassed through the wires,
of th'e'bag to extend in an angular 1 compass.
I claim A linemans toolbag comprising a rigid closed bottom, a flexible body portion having an open upper end, a hoop membersurrounding the upper end and around which the flexible body portion is lapped, eyelets extending through the body portion in the lapped zone, 10 insulating material covering said eyelets, a handle engaging said eyelets and an additional. suspension device carried by said body, substantially as described.
in testimony whereof, I have hereunto 15 signed my name.
EMANUEL F. SHIPMAN.
