RICHARD A. IBREUL, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
MITER-SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12,1921.
Application filed December 16, 1919. Serial No. 345,375.
T0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, RrcnARD A. BREUL, a citizen of the United States residing at Bridgeport, inthe county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Miter-Square, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement applied toa sheet metal vmiter square now in general use by carpenters and builders and known as a figure 4 square, and the object of this improvement is for the purpose of making more serviceable and reliable such a miter square otherwise made according to a former invention of the applicant, Patent No. 768,324 of August 23, 1904:, to Riche ard A. Breul. As will be noted by referring to the annexed drawings and specification, I do provide for, and obtain a clear,
unobstructed view of the scale marks andv also a more extended and convenientresting surface of thebeam flanges by the applica tion of the present improvement, in a manner for such reason differing from a similar invention of the applicant, filed Sept. 5, 1918, and still under consideration by the examiner and patent authorities.
Figure l of the drawings gives a face view of a square according to my present improvement. Fig. 2 shows a sheet metal blank of a form necessary to form a cross beam containing .my improved features of this device, and Fig. 3 an enlarged end view of a beamafter completion of the bending operations. In Fig. 4 is seen a top view,
and in Fig. 5 an enlarged end view of the cover attached to the beam flanges.
As apparent by Fig. l, I employ the usual angular main plate a, composed .of the squaring shank a and the miter shank a,
both united by a properly situated crossy beam Z), the flanges of the latter being enveloped and the open space between these and the beam sides closed up by the cover o, Fig. 1l. l
Thepresent improvement consists in the special formation of the beam blank b represented in Fig. 2, and the consequent form of that beam end engaging the squaring shank, and also includes a corresponding elongation of the beam cover.V Beam blank b is folded at its center andV again bentoutwardly on the dotted lines f and f', to have the flanges Z2 and 19', (see Fig. 3) which in turn are engaged and surrounded by the covering c, bent to the shape shown in Fig.
5 and having the slots g and g, Fig. 4l, to aline with the inner space of the beam and to admit the shank portions ofthe main plate a.
On shank a', Fig. l,v is shown a dotted line a,`indicating, in combination with line y, the shape of the beam end as if formed according to said former invention, and it 1s clearly apparent by consideration of the same lines, that a considerable extension, (see 11,) of the upper or flange portion of the beam has been effected, as well as a'clear triangular space fw, thus enabling a perfect view of the graduationmarks and ligures, obscured and hidden away from sight in beams of "said previous invention. The line 0c in Fig. 2 also represents the end edgeof a blank as now manufactured, while e and e represent the gain of the flanged portion `of my present improvement, while the above stated space, fw, is effected by means of the i removal of material from space marked d.
The cover c is slipped over and along the flanges b and 5 of the beam, and thereafter the completed beam entered into its proper place as indicated by the drawing,
its outward end engaging the cut out portion a" on miter shank a, and when prop-k erly adjusted the beam sides are secured'to the inclosed portions of plate a. by the yelectric spot welding process, administeredby proper currents through points located onv the marks m and, n, Fig. l.
A square thuscompleted will have the added usefulness of an. extended resting surface of the beam flanges, of good service yin short and irregular edge work, and will also permit a perfect and clear viewV of the graduation marks and figures.
l claim. f n As an article of manufacture a miter square consisting of a main plate having ay miter shank and a graduated shank, of a beam U shaped gin cross section and having squaring. flanges, said beam connecting said shanks, and a loose sheet metal cover en gaging and y graduating arm having the flanged portions and the cover thereonextended, and the U shaped part connecting the flanges being cut away, as and for the purpose described.
