.BAIL-JOINT AND FASTENER THEREFOR.
Application filed.V .sebruaryfz,` 1921. Serial No. 441,880.y
fo all w hom 'it may concern: p f
Be it known that I, Josnrn BAKovroH, a citizen of Jugo-Slavia, residing at Herminie, in the county of lVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Rail-Joints and Fasteners Therefor, of which the following is a specification. n
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rail joints and fasteners therefor, wherein fastening members lock the rail ends to a tie and directly engage the rail flanges and upper supportingV .devices of identical construction.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in-which lilrereference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a rail joint showing an I-beam supporting tie in section and with the improvedfastening devices securing the meeting rail ends to the tie,
- Fig. -2 is a top plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 1 with the rail ends in longitudinal horizontal section,
Fig. v3 is a vertical cross Vsectional viewv taken on line III-I-III of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4l is a fragmentary top plan view of a I tie constructed in accordance with this invention.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, there is-illustrated a rail joint and yfastener secured upon a supporting tie in the formk of an I-beam including a vertical web 1, base flanges 2 and an upper tread 3 for supporting the rail ends. The
`rails are of standard construction, embodying webs 4, baseflanges' and treads 6, the
meeting ends of the rails being centrally positioned transversely of the treadv 3 of the, supporting ties, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The rail fastening bars are of identical construction, and are substantlallyr ofy V- formation, `each fastener comprising av cenl tral portion 7 having inclined extensions 8.
An opening 10 is provided in the web 4 of each rail end, said openings being in different horizontal planes and through which ythe central portion 7 ofthe fastener freely extends. The free ends of the fastener are threaded as at 11 and freely extend through diagonal slots 12 provided in the edges of the tread 3 of the tie while spacing collars 13 are loosely mounted on the projecting threaded ends 11 with the upper faces thereof beveled for engagement with the under face of the tietread 3Vwith the outer faces thereof extending transversely of the longitudinal axis of the ends 11 for frictional Specification of Letterslatent. Patented Aipli'lz, 19271. l, l
engagement-bythe fastening nuts 111 threaded on the ends 11 of said fasteners.
When the rail ends are connected by the V-shaped fasteningmembers, the intermediate bent portions 7 ofthe fastening members are positioned in the openings 10 of the rail webs. f yThe openings 10 being in different horizontal planes, facilitates the mounting of the fastening members so that one of said members will overlie the other as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. I The diagonal slots 12 opening at the 4edgesvof the tie seat 3 will permit a pivotal movement of the fastening member within the web opening 10 so that the fasteningmember in being moved down- A wardly will have the threaded ends thereof received into said slots to proj ect beneath the tread 3 of the tie.
the fastening members and moved to engagement with the bottom face of the tie tread The collars 13 are then freely mounted on the threaded ends'll ofv 3 by the lclamping nuts 14. With this construction, the rail ends 'are securely anchored to the supporting tie in the absence 'of fish plates and supporting chairs while the fastening members 7 alone anchor the rail ends to the tie.y
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention,
it is nevertheless to be understood that minor` j changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is 1. A rail Joint and fastener comprising meeting rail ends having an aperture 1n each .web portion, V-shaped fastening members passing through said apertures, a supporting tie for the rail ends and means for anchoring the ends of the fastening members to the tie. Y
2. The combination With meeting rail ends having apertured Web portions and an I- beam supporting tie therefor7 of fastening members passing through spaced rail web openings and anchored to the upper flanges of the Iebeam tie.
3. The combination with meeting rail ends having apertured Web portions and an I-beam supporting tie, of V-shaped fastening members extending through the rail Web apertures7 the upper flange of the I-beam supporting tie having diagonal edge slots therein through which the ends of the fastening members pass, spacing collars on the 'ends of said fastening members beneath the flange of the tie and securing nuts on the` ends of said fastening members.
In `testimony whereof I aiiX my signature.
`JOSEPH BAKovioH.
