To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AAnoN Nniswnxnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orwigsburg, in the county of Sch-uykill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railroad-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to'make and use the same.

,The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of metallic cross ties and to provide a simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive cross tie designed particularly for use on bridges and other places where wooden cross ties are liable to be destroyed by fire and adapted to aii'ord the resiliency of a wooden cross tie without liability of breaking the fastening means and capable of enabling the gage of the rails to be readily corrected when required.
WVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that varlous changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the metallic cross tie comprises in its construction a pair of I beams 1 consisting of vertical webs and top and bottom flanges 3 and l, fitted together clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings and connected by top and bottom plates 5 and 6 riveted or otherwise secured to the top and bottom flanges of the I beam. The cross tie is particularly designed for use on bridges and other structures liable to destruction by fire and where wooden cross ties are a menace and the bottom plate is provided with transverse flanges 7 preferably consisting of angle strips secured to the lower face of the bottom plate and projecting downwardly therefrom so as to engage the stringers or beams of the bridge or other structure. These flanges are also adapted to engage the road bed to prevent the said cross tie from slipping.
The top flanges 3 of the I beam are recessed between their ends to provide longitudinal slots 9 located at the end portions of the cross tie and adapted to receive rods 10 and 11 which extend through slots 12 and 13 of the top plates for engaging the bottom flanges of the rails 14 at the inner and outer sides thereof as clearly illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings. The rods 10 and 11 are arranged at an inclination and are provided at their upper engaging endswith hooks 15 and 16 which embrace the said bottom flanges of the rails. The outer rods 10 pierce end plates 17 and are threaded for the reception of nuts 18. The end plates 17 extend across the ends of the webs of the I beams and have angularly bent terminal attaching portions 19 which are riveted or otherwise secured to the webs 2 of the 1 beam. The lower ends of the inner rods 11 extend to the central portion of the tie and pierce vertical plates 20 extending downwardly from the top of the cross tie at the ends of an opening 21 formed by cutting away the top flanges between the webs of the I beams as clearly illustrated in Fig. i of the drawings. The top plates extend to and terminate at the opening 21 and the vertical plates 20 are provided at their upper and lower ends with oppositely extending flanges 22 and 23. The upper flanges 22 extend outwardly and project over the inner ends of the top plates 5 while the lower flanges 23 extend inwardly and are overlapped and secured to the bottom flanges a by rivets 24C or other suitable fastening devices. The inner rods 11 which project into the pocket or recess 25 are threaded for the reception of nuts 26 which engage the inner faces of the vertical plates 20. By adjusting the rods it will be seen that the gage of the rails may be corrected. The fastening device for securing the rails to the cross tie effectively prevents the rails from spreading or moving upwardly and at the same time may permit a longitudinal movement of the rails due to expansion and contraction. The nuts of the outer rods are exposed at the ends of the cross tie while ready access may be had to the nuts of the inner rods at the pocket 25 which is open at the top.
The metallic cross tie may be equipped with additional rail engaging means consisting of clamping plates 27 engaging the bottom flanges of the rails at opposite sides thereof and adjustably secured to the cross tie by bolts 28 or other suitable fastening means which pass through slots 29 in the clamping plates and pierce the top plates of the cross tie and the top flanges of the I beams.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A metallic cross tie including a pair of I beams arranged side by side and having their upper and lower flanges fitted together, the upper flanges being cut away between the webs to form intermediate and end openings, end plates secured to the webs of the I beams, spaced plates located at the intermediate opening and inner and outer rods piercing the intermediate and end plates and extending through the end opening of the said top flanges and provided thereat with means for engaging a rail at the inner and outer sides thereof.
2. A metallic cross tie including a pair of I beams arranged side by side and having their upper flanges cut away at the ends and at the center to form openings, top plates secured to the upper flanges and provided at the end openings with slots and terminating at the central opening, vertical plates arranged in the central opening and provided at their upper and lower edges with oppositely extending flanges, the upper flanges engaging the top plates and the lower flanges being secured to the bottom flanges of the I beams, end plates connecting the webs at the ends of the I beams, inclined rods piercingthe end plates and the vertical plates and provided with means for engaging the same and having terminal hooks located at the end openings of the I beams and the slots of the top plates and arranged to engage the rails at the side edges thereof.
3. A metallic cross tie including spaced beams having vertical webs and upper and lower horizontal flanges fitted together, the upper horizontal flanges being cut away at the ends and at an intermediate point to form end slots and an intermediate opening, upright plates or members mounted in the intermediate opening, and rods piercing the upright plates and adjustably connected with the same and extending therefrom to the end slots and provided thereat with means for engaging the base of a rail.
4. A metallic cross tie including beams having vertical webs and upper and lower horizontal flanges and arranged side by side, the upper horizontal flanges being cut away at the ends and at an intermediate point to form end slots and an intermediate opening, upper plates secured to the upper flanges and extending from the end slots to the intermediate opening and adapted to receive the rails, upright plates or members mounted in the intermediate opening at the ends thereof and fastening devices extendmg from the upright plates to the end slots and provided with means for engaging the rails at the base thereof.
