Description

UNITED s'ra'rns PATENT OFFICE.
RALPH F. THACKSTON, OF ANDERSON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
ROCKER-SHAFT BEARING.
Application filed May 29,
T 0 all to]: am. it may concern Be it known that I, RALPH F. THACKSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Anderson and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rocker-Shaft Bearings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for looms, and has for its object the provision of a novel hearing having a socket in which is removably mounted a wooden block curved for engagement with the picker foot, the socket being adapted to contain oil which will be drawn through the wooden block by capillary action for effecting thorough lubri cation.
An important object is the provision of a bearing of this character which is adapted to support the picker foot properly so as to effect the making of a steady pick, another feature being that the bearing is adjustable whereby to take up all lost motion.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, a great time and labor saver, which will be efficient and durable in use, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the device in position upon a portion of a loom,
Fig. 2 is a plan view,
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view therethrough, and
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the device detached and looking at the rear face.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates the rocker bearing of a loom, B designates a rocker shaft,
and C designates the picker foot. The bearing is held on the loom by bolts D.
In carrying out my invention I provide a frame 10 including spaced upstanding portions 11, each having a rectangular opening 12. formed therein. At the upper end of each portion 11 is a lateral projection 13 through which is threaded a vertical setscrew 1d carrying a lock nut 15. The device is positioned against the rocker bearing A with the bolts D passed through the open- Specification of Letters Patent.

' ings 12. The projections 13 are disposed movably disposed within the pan 16 is a block 17 of hard wood having the grain extending vertically and having its tip grooved, as shown at 19, for engagement with the picker foot C. The groove 19 forms the bearing surface upon which the picker foot rocks and it will be observed that owing to the capillary action of the wood of the block 17, the oil within the pan will be drawn through the block, saturating it and will eiiiciently lubricate the bearing surface engaged by the picker foot.
When the device is constructed as above described and mounted upon a loom, it becomes a part of the loom and incidentally does not require any alterations in the loom structure. When the block 17 becomes worn slightly, it will be observed that any lost motion in the moving parts may be taken up by adjusting the set screws 1 1. When the block 17 becomes badly worn it is obvious that it may be readily replaced at trifling cost so that my bearing structure is very economical as well as simple.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a frame including spaced upstanding portions each formed with a lateral projection engageable upon the rocker bearing of a loom, set screws passing downwardly through said projections, each of said upstanding portions having formed therein a rectangular opening for the passage of bolts holding the bearing to the loom, a pan member projecting over one side of said frame and adapted to contain oil, and a wooden bearing block disposed within said pan and adapted to support the picker foot.
2. In combination with a loom and the picker foot thereof, a bearing member comprising a supporting bracket vertically adent material disposed within said pan and engaging the picker foot.
3.111 combination wlth a frame and picker foot of a loom, the bearing device comprising a bracket structure secured against one face of said frame and provided with means whereby to effect vertical adjust- 10 ment, a pan-like projection formed integrally upon and projecting from one face of said bracket structure, and a block of wood disposed within said pan and engaging the picker foot whereby to form (i-hearing there- 15 for.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
RALPH F. THACKSTON.
