lSpecification of Letters flatent.
Patented Apr. 12,1921.
Application filed July 3, 1918.` Serial No. 243,166.
My invention relates to improvements in Y can openers, and has for its object the pro-v vision of an improved construction of this character which is simple and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combina-v tions and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed'.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part ofthis specification, and in which, A
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a can opener embodying the invention,
Fig. 2, a transverse section thereof, taken substantially on line 2 2 of Fig. 3, n
Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the can opener, and v Y Fig. 4, a detailed view of a cutting wheel and its mounting employed in the construction.
The preferred form of construction, as` illustrated in the drawings, comprises a supporting member 5 made of a strip of heavy sheet metal bent into transversely curved Achannel form, with the extreme end 6 thereof'bent downwardly to close the end of said channel and provided with ya downwardly and longitudinally extending piercing point 7 adapted to serve as a pivot for the can opener in the usual manner. At its other end the supporting member is provided with a handle 8, as indicated. The supporting member 5 is also provided with a longitudinal slot 9 located at the bottom of the channel` formation thereof, and a saddle or carriage 10 is slidably mounted on the outside of member 5, being curved to conform thereto, and provided with lips 11 sliding on the edges 'of member 5. The saddle member 10 is provided with downwardly extending mounting lugs or ears 12 projecting through the slot 9, and a cutting wheel 13 is rotatably mounted between said ears by means of a machine screw 14 extending loosely through one of said lugs and threaded in the other, as indicated in'Fig. 3. ByA
this arrangement the cutting wheel 13 `may Y be readily adjusted longitudinally on the supporting member 5 tosuit 'different sizes of cans and then employed to remove the top of the can by inserting the point 7 at theV center thereof and swinging the cutting wheel around the edge of the can while pressing downwardly thereon. `As indicated, the cutting wheel 13is arranged with- 1n the channel member 5 with a cutting edge projecting therefrom and whereby the wheel is partially protected and concealed within the channel member, and the general construction of the opener greatly stiffened and straightened.
' While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carryinV my invention into effect, this is capable o j variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but de- 'sire` to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of f the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is v1. A. can Opener comprising a supporting member, provided with a longitudinal slot; a saddle sliding upon said vsupporting member; mounting ears on said saddle project-r ing through theslot inv said supporting member, and a cutting wheel rotatably.
mountedbetween ears, substantially as described.
2. A can opener, comprising a transversely curved channel member, provided with lalongitudinal slot at the bottom of the channel; a saddle curved to fit the curvatureVv of saidl channel member andv sliding upon the outer side' thereof; mounting ears on said saddle member, projecting through the slot in said channel member; and a cutting wheel rotatably mounted between said ears and resting partiallywithin said channel member with its edge projecting therefrom, substantially as described.
3A can opener comprising a channel member closed at one Aend, and provided with a longitudinal slot vat the bottom of the channel therein; a point at the closed end of `said member; a handle at the other end of said member; alsaddle mounted to slide upon the outer side of said channel member and provided at its edges with lips sliding on the edges of said channel member;
