Application filed November 13j198. Serial No. 262,382.
advertising commodities and various business enterprises, and, more especially,'to portable or movable independent inkstands used on tables, desks and like supports in hotels, offices and public places of advantage to advertisers. y Y
The invention herein consists of a portable slab or base having one or a plurality of panels arranged longitudinally across the forepart of its top surface in which cards or the like containing advertising matter are inserted ork placed so as to be exposed to ready view, an ink bottle or well inserted and suitably held in an opening made in one of the rear corners of the said top surface of the base, and a series of longitudinal, parallel grooves or recesses made in the rear part of said top surface of the base col venient to hold pens or pencils used by the occupant of the independent table or desk on which the combination advertising device herein is placed for use. .l p
The actual details of structure will be fully hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the porty able independent advertising device embodying my invention herein in its preferred form;
Fig, 2, a transverse section taken ona line with the ink-well, showing the vmanner in which the advertising cards are held within the fore part of the base, free for ready exchange;
Fig. 3, a perspective view of a desirable form of vlocking ring or clamp used by me in detachably securing the ink-well in place in the opening made in the rear left-hand corner of the base; and- Fig. 4, a perspective view of an unlocking ring for use with the said clamp shown in Fig. 3, for the release of the ink-well when desired. l
1 indicates a rectangular slab or base mad of wood or other suitable material and having a sloping, fore' upper-surface 2 in which is provided an elongated' opening 3 with a rther having a shouldered portion 5, approachable; from the bottom of the base and adapted to receive the outer edges of the advertising cards 6 for exposure to view within the said opening 3 that forms an attractive panel in the top surface of the said base.
iqsheet or a'series off sheets of glass 7 is preferably placedunder the shoulder ahead of the card or series of cards 6 and a beveled edge 4f, and such elongated openingv backing 8 is placed in contact with the boty tcm or back of said card, or series of cards, as customary in the framing of pictures.
Nails 9 are used to secure the cardsv in placeagainst ordinary therewith.
Y l() ind-icateseach one of the vcorner feet for elwating the base 1 above the supporting-surface of the separate, independent, supporting desk or table whereon the device is removably placed for use and advertising exposure. f
ln the said panel, shown in Fig. 1, ldisplay a series of'three cards each of which is adapted to containthe desired advertisreinoval' V,or tampering ing matter and for which the advertiser pays and thus makes the device self-supporting and without cost ordinarily-to the proprietor of the place where installed.
The rear portion l1 of the ltop surface of the base is fiat and horizontal, andprofvided with three elongated recesses or semi-deep grooves 11a, extended longitudinally along the said fiat surface from about the center to almost the extreme right-hand end of the said basel, for useV in containing pens and pencils and writing materials of that sort. the left-hand endof the said flat top surface being provided with an orifice or opening 12, pierced through the material of said base, as bestl shown in Fig. 2, and any ink-well 13 of any desired or approved type being inserted in such orifice 12, thelatter being preferably supplied, however, with a flat ring or flange 111 that rests in a countersink or shoulder l5 made in the top ofthe said orifice, and pendent resilient arms 16 eX- tending from said ring 14 down into the oriflee part way through but slightly free from the side wall of the orifice so that they can be forced outwardly by the lower extension 17 of the ink-well and then with their lower inwardly-turned ends 18 adapted to engage the beveled groove 19 made circumferentially around the lower part of the ink-well above l the extension 17 all as bestshown in Fig. 2,
vent itsordinary removal therefrom by theV usual run of patrons of the place of installation of the device, and, in order to readily l remove the ink-fwell for the purposeK` of cleaning, refilling, or replacing, as the case may be, I provide a separate unlocking or releasing ring 2O that has a series of upturned extensions or arms 2l, corresponding in number to the arms 16 of the lockingring 111, such releasing-ring 20 being inserted in the lower end Aof the orifice 12 and Vvmanipulated upwardly and circularly until the arms 21 forcibly engage the Vresilient arms 16, whereby the latter may be then thrown outwardly from engaging-contact with the shoulderlf). Y
It is obvious that the sloping side 2 of the top surface of the slab or base 1 can be duplicated along the opposite side of the flat or horizontal part 11 of said top-surface, and to contain one or more panels for advertising matter for presenting to the view of those sitting at a table or desk that is used yalo-ng both sides thereof. y
I claimfzi Y As an improved article of manufacture, an advertising novelty and writers companion for desk use and display, comprising a rectangular shallow slab havinga Hat bottom and short corner-supporting ballprojections, a partially horizontal flat topl Vinclined upper surface and adapted to accommodate one Vor more show-cards, and a removable sheet of' glass in said sight to cover the said show-cards free for exchangeremoval ywhen desired, the whole being adapted for varied use on a fiat-top table or desk, to display said show-cards andV to serve the otherwise useful purpose of'conveniently holding ink and pens for the occupant of the desk, substantially as herein shown and described. y .v
