`rrnn Sterns PATENT OFFICE.
SELDEN DUNCAN, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
HOTELWHEGISTER AND ADVERTISING-CARD CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,306, dated January 30, 1900.
Application iiled October 9,1899. Serial No. 733,035. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SELDEN DUNCAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonic, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Hotel- Register and AdvertiSingCard Cabinet, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in hotel-registers and advertising-card cabinets.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of hotel-registers and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one adapted to contain a large variety of business-cards and display a sample of the same and capable of receiving a number of loose register-sheets and of gradually elevating the same as they are consumed, so that the top sheet will be supported at the proper height.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying' drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hotel-register and card-cabinet constructed in accordance with this invention.V
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a desk or cabinet adapted to be rotated to arrange it in the desired position and provided at its bottom with a suitable socket or opening adapted to receive a pivot 2 of a base 3, which may be of any desired construction. The pivot 2 extends vertically from the base 3, and the bottom of the frame or cabinet is suitably reinforced at the socket at t, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings.
The desk or cabinet, which is substantially rectangular in plan view, tapers from the back to the front to provide an inclined top or upper face to arrange the register-sheets 5 in a convenient position for writing. The top of the desk or cabinet is provided with a rectangular opening or recess 6 for the reception of the registeusheets 5, which are arranged upon a vertically-adjustable support 7, adapted to be elevated as the registersheets are consumed, so that the top one remaining on the support will be arranged at the proper elevation. The opening 6 for the register-sheets is suitably framed, and the adjustment of the support 7 is eected by means of a screw 8 engaging a threaded opening of the fixed portion 9, which may consist of a board, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings, or only a transverse bar may be employed. A horizontal slot or aperture is provided at the front of the desk or cabinet at 10 to enable the register-sheets to be readily introduced into the opening or recess 6, and this aperture is normally closed by a removable strip or bar 11, provided with a suitable handle 12. .A drawer is arranged in the space below the fixed support of the adj usting-screw, which is suitably swiveled at its upper end, and its lower end, which is provided with a suitable head, is readily accessible when the drawer 13 is partially or Wholly removed.
The opening or recess 6 terminates short of the back of the desk or cabinet, which is pro'- vided with a socket or recess 14, located at the head of the register-sheets and adapted to receive an ink-well. A pen-rack 15 is secured to the back of the desk adjacent to the ink-well and is preferably provided With a pocket or holder 16, adapted to receive business-cards, circulars, or the like. The front of the pocket is provided with suitable grooves or ways 17, adapted to receive a card for indicating the character of the matter contained in the pocket or holder.
At each side of the desk or cabinet is arranged a projecting series of pigeonholes 18, and an inwardly-offset series of pigeonholes 19 is located above the pigeonholes 18 and is arranged adjacent to the recess or opening 6, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 of the accompanying drawings. The projecting pigeonholes, which are open at their outer ends, are adapted to receive business-cards and the like, and the top wall 20 of these pigeonholes 1S forms a convenient support for the reception of sample business-cards or name-plates to indicate the characterof those contained in the various pigeonholes 1S. A
longitudinal strip 21 is secured to the upper IOC ` plates, whereby they are retained in position,
and a similar strip 21n is arranged at the bottom of the pigeonholes 19 to engage the inner edges of the cards or name-plates.
The top 2O of the projecting pigeonholes consists of an extension of the bottom of the pigeonholes 19 and is formed by a board secured to the upper edge of the adjacent side of the desk or cabinet, as clearly'illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings. The top 22 of the pigeonholes 19 is provided at its upper face with parallel longitudinal strips 23, provided at their inner edges with grooves and adapted to receive cards or name-plates to indicate the contents of the various pigeonholes. The inner strips 23 are provided with projecting fianges which extend over the recess or opening for the reception of the register-sheets, and they are adapted to ret-ain the said sheets in the recess or opening.
The sides of the cabinet or desk are provided With pockets 241, adapted to contain cards and various other matter and provided with exterior grooves or ways for supporting cards or name-plates for indicating the contents of the pockets. The spaces at opposite sides of the ink-well are adapted to bear various advertisements. If desired, pigeonholes 26 may be provided beneath the advertising-spaces at opposite sides of the ink-well, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The projecting pigeonholes and the upper pigeonholes are supported by oppositely- inclined braces 27 and 28, located at the inner and outer faces of the sides, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings, and having their upper ends located beneath and supporting the bottoms of the said pigeonholes. By this construction the pigeonholes, which lie at opposite sides of the side pieces 29 of the desk or cabinet, are securely held in position and are prevented from sagging.
It will be seen that the revolving hotel-register and card-cabinet is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it presents an ornamental and attractive appearance, and that the register-sheets and cards or other contents of the pigeonholes are within convenient reach.
Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction within the scope of theappended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What is claimed is-- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a desk or cabinet rotatably mounted in a horizontal position and having its top inclined and provided with a recess or opening adapted to receive loose registersheets, a vertically-adjustable support arranged within the recess or opening upon which the said register-sheets are placed, a removable strip or bar at the front end of the top of the desk or cabinet for controlling access to the recess or opening for the registersheets, and means for raising and lowering the support for the register-sheets.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a desk or cabinet horizontally disposed and provided with an upper inclined top having a recess or `opening for the reception of register-sheets for record purposes, and stepped tiers of pigeonholes projecting outwardly from opposite sides of the upper portion of the desk or cabinet and having the opening thereof in planes at right angles to the length of the desk or cabinet, the-top covering of the pigeonholes forming means for holding cards or name-plates, and supplied with retention devices, whereby such cards or name-plates may be easily inspected by the user of the register-sheets between them.
3. A desk or cabinet adapted to receive register-sheets and provided at opposite sides with outwardly-projecting pigeonholes open at their outer ends, the top of the desk or cabinet and the pigeonholes being similarly inclined, and said pigeonholes being stepped in a transverse direction to provide distant tiers on each side, the upper covering for the pigeonholes having oppposite grooved retaining devices longitudinally dsposed and opening out at their upper ends for the reception and removal of cards or name-plates for contiguous arrangement adjacent the register-sheets, and corresponding to the cards or name-plates in pigeonholes directly underneath.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SELDEN DUNCAN.
