Application filed Ma a, 1 20. Serial No. 381,266.
Be it known that I, STANL Y H. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the countyof Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring-Faucets, of which the following is aspecification.
This inventlon relates to that classof dispensing faucets for soda fountain and like uses, in which a quantity of a sweetening or flavoring fluid is measured off and mixed with carbonated water during the flow of the same from the faucet,-'and more espe cially relates to the type 'of such faucets which constitutes the subject matter prior Letters Patent No. 1',323,069, dated November 25, 1919 and No. 1,327,162, dated January 26,1920. f The present improvement hasfor its object, to' provide in'connection with the dispensing means of my prior patented construction, a simple and eflicientstructural formation and association of partswhereby a predetermined and fixed quantity of the sweetening or flavoring fluid is measuredoff and then, discharged into the path of the flow of the carbonated water, all I as will hereinafter more-fully appear. e In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is a perspecti e view illustrating the general. and preferred arrangement'ofparts in the present improvement. r
Fig. 2, is a central vertical sectional eleva tion of the faucet structure, showing the controlling valve of the measuring means n a closed condltlon. v
Fig. 3, isa companion section on line33 'Fig. 4 showlng-sald valve n an open con.- I
dition'. r I
' Fig. 4, is a horizontal section .on line'44 Fig.2. I.
Like reference in the several views.
As represented in the drawings, the pie-.1
ferred formation and association of the parts are substantially the same as in my prior Patent No. 1,323,069 aforesaid, and comprises a construction as follows 1 designates the'outlet neck of a soda fountain provided at its upper and forward end with a controlling faucet 2 by which the trolled. The faucet 2 is, preferably of the semi-rotary type and provided with an operating handle 3 and With an outlet neck 4 at of my.
numbers indicate like parts Specification of Letters Patent. 'P atented A 12 1921 its lower end terminating in a' discharge n0z-' zle 5. forv the. carbonated water.
I '6 designates an elevated'supply tank for the syrup or likeefiavoring fluid used, preferably secured to the outlet neck 1 by means of a clamp bracket 7 or. other like connecting means.
. 8 designates a circular head or disk fixedly connected to the outlet'neck '4 of the faucet 2 with its perimeter formed for the attachment. of the hereinafter described coupling sleeve. v V a In the present improvementthe head 8 is formed from concentric walls 9 and 10 integrally connected by a bottom wall or web 11 -to provide a closed annular measuring chamber 12as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Such I :measuring chamber encircles the discharge nozzle 5 w th 1ts nner annular wall forming a free. passage for the downward discharge of the carbonated water from said nozzle.
' 13 designates a vent pipe or passageconect1ng;the upper end of the measuring chamber 12with the supply tank 6, to insure a free flow of syrup orthelike fromsaid supplytank into the measuring chamber.
. .14 designates avalve housing arranged in one side of the measuring chamber 12, with its uppenend in coni-lection with. a tubular neck 15, whichin turn is connected by a supply. pipe orpassage 16 with the supply tank 6 aforesaid- .17 and 18'designate upper and lower valve seats formed in the valve housing 14 afore-' said. 7
19 designates a lateral opening or passage connecting the space between the valve seats 17 18'w1th the measuringchamber 6 aforesaid. ,7 -20v designates a vertically movable valve head arranged intermediate gof the. valve seats 17, 18 and adaptedfor alternate seating contact with .said seats in theoperation of the appliance. The valve head 20 is preferably of the vertically guided type shown,
and provided with a dependingnoperating stem" 21 adapted for operative engagement w'th-an annular ledgeof the movable hopper or vessel hereinafter described. With the valve head 20 in its lower position shown in Fig. 2, communication is open between the supply tank 6 andmeasurlng chamber 12, with the outlet from said'measurln'g chamber closedby the valvehead 20 seated upon the lower valve seat 18. With the valve head. 20. in its. upp pqs tie shave i g;
3O 1 flavoring fluids .Having thus 3, the outlet from the measuring chamber 12, through 0 ening 19 and lower valve seat 18 is open, W ile the inlet from the supply tank 6 is closed by the valve head 20 seated against the upper valve seat 17. V
22 designates a movable hopper or vessel, similar in construction and operation to the movable hopper or vessel described in my prior Patent No. 1,323,069 and having an outlet neck 23 r at bottom, an outturned flange 24 at top, and an internal annular ledge 25 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
26 designates 'a coupling sleeve screwed upon or otherwise secured to the perimeter of the head ordisk 8 aforesaid, and having at its lower end an inturned annular flange 27 adapted to engage beneath the outturned flange 24: of the hopper 22 to hold the same in place and at the same time permit of lim-' ited vertical movement of said hopper in relation to the head 8 in a practical operation of the apparatus.
28 designates an operating-cross head fixedly secured to the outlet neck 23 of the hopper 22 with its cross arms extending away from the sides of said neck to afford abutments against which the attendant can press the rim of a dispensinggoblet or the like, in an attainment of an upward movement of the hopper 22 and a flow of syrup or like fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a dispensing faucet, the combination of a main supply controlling faucet, a measuring chamber associated with said faucet, a secondary valve controlling the inlet: to and the outlet from said measuring chamber, and a receiving hopper having limited independent movement in relation to said faucet and measuring chamber, said hopper having 0 erative engagement with said secondary va ve. 1
2. In a dispensing faucet, the combina tion of a main supply controlling faucet, a measuring chamber associated with said faucet and having an annular form, a secondary valve controlling the inlet to and the outlet from said measuring chamber,
7 and a receiving hopper having limited independent movement in relation to said faucet and measuring chamber, said hopper having operative engagement with said secondary valve;
. of May, 1920.
3. In a dispensing faucet, the combination of a main supply controlling faucet having a circular head at its outlet end, a
-measuring chamber associated with said head, a valve housing associated with said measuring chamber, a valve head arranged in said housing and controlling the inlet to and the outlet from said measurin chamber, and means for manually actuatlng said.
valve head. r
4. In a dispensing faucet, the comblnation of a main supply controlling faucet having a circular head at its outlet end, a
and the outlet from said measuring chamber, a receiving hopper attached in a vertically movable manner to said head and prov ded Wltll means for operating said valve head, and an operatmg cross head assoclated with said hopper.
5. In adispensing faucet, the combination of a main supply controlling faucethaving a circular head at its outlet end, a'measuring chamber associated with said head, a valve housing associated with said measuring chamber, a valve'head having a depending stem, arranged in said valve housing to con trol the'inlet to and the outlet from said measuring chamber, a receiving hopper at tached in a vertlcally movable mannerto said head and provided with means for operating said valve head, and an'operating cross headassociated with said hopper. V
6. In a dispensing faucet, the combination of a main supply controlling faucet having a circular head at 'its outlet end, a measuring chamber associated with said head and having an annular form, a' valve housing associated with said measuring chamber, a valve head having a depending stem, arranged in said valve housing and controlling the inlet to and the'o'utlet from said measuring chamber, a receiving hopper attached in a vertically movable manner to said headand provided with an internalannular ledge for operative engagement with the depending valve stem aforesaid, and an operating cross head associated with said hopper.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 11th day STANLEY H. KNIGHT.
