To all whom it may concern:
Be it known-that I, IKE WISNIPOLSKY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marking Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to marking devices and particularly to devices of this class de-- signed to be used in connection with buttons hole making machines, button attaching machines and'similar machines of this class for,
attaching devices of any kind or class to garment parts at spaced intervals; and the object of the invention is to provide a device which may be readily attached to machines of the class specified and operated by said machines or a part thereof to mark on a garment part or sheet of fabric of any kind or class the place wherebuttonholes are to be formed and the place where buttons or other attachingdevices are to be secured; a further object of the IlIIVGIllZlOH belng to provide a device of the class specified with 7 adjustable means whereby the space between the buttonholes, buttons or other attachlng devices may be varied; and with these and other objects in view the invention conslsts in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of'my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters 111 each'of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic plan view of the work-bench or table of a buttonhole making-machine and showing my improvement mounted in connection therewith;

In Fig. 1 of the drawing 5 represents a work-bench or table upon which the bedplate 6 of the buttonhole machine is secured. A plunger 7 is movable toward and from the bed-plate 6 and is provided with ahead portion 8 with which a cutter blade 9 is de tachably connected, said blade being held in place by a set screw 10. These parts of l3 and 14 Slidably and adj ustably the machine have been shown and described merely for the purpose of illustrating'the' use of my improved marking device 11, and 1t Wlll be apparent that while I have shown this device in connection with a buttonhole making machine, I am not necessarily limited to thls combination as the'markin'g de vice may be used in connection with various other machines of a similar character.
The marking device 11 consists of a frame 12 preferably stamped from sheet metaland compr ses end members 13 and 14: joined by a longitudinal; member 15, having an elon gated aperture 16 whichjextends approximately the full length thereof. The end member 13 isprovided with an outwardly directed extension 17 which preferably extends at right angles to the part 13, as 7 clearly shown in Fig. 1. The end members ofthe frame are also joined by a shaft 18 upon which'the frame 12 is rotatably mounted; .The shaft 18 extends through the end member 14 of the frame extension 19 and, bent inwardly and downwardly and provided atits freeend with a asshown'at l9 and a supporting arm 20"is secured to the foot-piece 21 through which screws 22 are adapted to pass 1nto the table 5 for securing the arm 20 in position. The arm 20 serves as a. support for the frame 12.
Mounted on the extension 19 of the shaft member 14 thereof-to normally hold said 7 frame in a raised or inoperative position. mounted on the frame 12,which constitutes the main frame of the device, is a supplemental frame 26 which is also preferably composed of sheet :18 is a splral spring 23, one end24t of which metal, one end of which is fashioned into a,

securely grasp the pencil 30 therein as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Passed centrally through the supplemental frame 26 is a bolt 82which also passes through the aperture 16 of the main frame 12, and this belt is provided with a thumb nut 33, which serves to secure the supplemental frame in connection with the main frame in any desired position of adjustment. The longitudinal member 15 of the frame, or one part thereof, is preferably provided with scale marks as shown at 34 in'connection with which the supplemental frame 26 cooperates in order to set the marking member 30, either a pencil or crayon, in the de- :3
sired position relative to a predetermined partor mechanism of the machine in c onnection with which themarking device opcrates.
As previously stated, I have shown for illustration my improved marking device 11 mounted in connection with a button -sole we making machine and, in this use of the device, the frame 12 is'preferably operated on the shaft 18 by the engagement of the head 35 of the set screw 10 of the machine with the extension 17 on the side member 13 of said frame, as is clearly shown in Figs. -1 and 3, whereby in the downward movement of the plunger 7 to pass the cutter blade 9 through a strip of cloth or garment part shown at 36 to finish the making of a buttonhole in said garment part, the frame 12 will 7 may be adjusted longitudinally of the frame 12 to bring the pencil or other device 30 at the desired distance from thecutterblade 9, and when once set in position it will remain in such position until a difierent spacing between the buttonholes is desired.
It will be. apparent that while I have shown my improved'marking device as operated through a specific part by a specific machine, my invention is not limited in this respect, as the marking device may be oper-.
ated by any moving part of a buttonhole machine whichwill not interfere with the passage of a workpiece, namely, a garment part or the like into and through the ma chine, but this also applies when the marking device is used in connection with other machines of a similar character to that shown herein, for illustration, and various changes;
in and modifications of the construction and operation of the device herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of'the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A marking device of the classdescribed comprising a shaft, means for supporting said shaft, a main frame composed of sheet metal fashioned to form end members joined by a longitudinal member having an elongated aperture, said shaft passing through apertures in said end members for rotatably supporting said main frame, a supplemental frame mounted on said shaft and adjustable longitudinally thereof and of the main frame, means passed through said supplemental frame and the longitudinal slot in the main frame for securing said supplemental frame in connection with the main frame in different positions of adjustment, tensional means for holding the. main and supplemental frames normally in a raised position, and means on the supplemental frame for detachably and adjustably securing a marking element in connection there-h with.

A marking device of the class described comprising a shaft, means for supporting said shaft, a main frame composed of sheet metal fashioned to form end members joined by a longitudinal memberhaving an elongated aperture, said shaft passing through apertures in said end members for rotatably supporting said main frame", a supplemental frame adjustably mounted on the main frame and comprising a strip of sheet metal one end of which is looped to engage said shaft, the other end portion beingbent at right angles and provided with an open spring loop member adapted to detachably means passed centrally through'said supple mental frame and the longitudinal slot of the main frame for securingsaid suppleand adjustably support a marking element,
