A match d1spens1ng cylinder or drum 8 is mounted in the compartment 1 and is provided with bearings with which the shaft 9 engages, whereby the drum may rotate. This shaft comprises two sections 10 and 11. The lower end of the upper section 10 has a socket 12 which telescopically receives the upper end of the section 11 so that the lower section 11 may rotate freely in the socket 12 and independently of the section 10. The upper end of the section 10 of the shaft has a reduced cylindrical portion 13 which is engaged in a correspondingly shaped opening 1% in the upper wall of the compartment 4i. The upper end of the section 10 of the shaft also has a reduced terminal 15 smaller than the reduced portion 13, and threaded upon the terminal 15 is a holding nut 16. The upper wall of the compartment engages between the nut 16 and the shoulder caused to be formed by the reduced portion 13. The section 10 of the shaft remains stationary through its connection with the upper wall of the compartment.
The lower end of the lower section 11 is mounted in a bearing in the lower wall of the compartment 1 and the lower extremity of the section 11 has pivoted thereto as at 17 a hand or finger piece 18 by which the 7 lower section 11 of the shaft can be rotated.
Carried by the lower part of the lower section is a ratchet wheel 19. The bottom wall of the compartment 41- is constructed to form a cavity or countersunk portion 20 in the upper wall of which the lower section 11 of the shaft engages. The ratchet wheel 19 is positioned in the countersunk portion of the lower wall of the compartment 4, and is fixed to the section 11 of the shaft. A spring tensioned pawl 21 is pivotally mounted on the under surface of the upper wall of the countersunk portion or depression 20 and is designed to cooperate with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 19 to prevent retrograde movement of the section 11 of the shaft. The depression or countersunk portion 20 also serves as a housing to receive the finger or hand piece 18 when moved to a horizontal position. Arranged within the dispensing cylinder (which is hollow) is a coiled spring 22 which when wound is put under torsional strain to tension the dispensing cylinder, and in order to accomplish this one end of the coil spring 22 is attached at 23 to the inner surface of the upper end of the dispensing cylinder 8 while its other end is attached as at 24: to the lower section 11 of the shaft. Obviously when the lower section of the shaft 11 is rotated by means of the hand or finger piece, the spring is put under tension, and owing to the torsional action of the spring the dispensing cylinder, when released, will automatically rotate intermittently. The dispensing cylinder comprises two sections 25 and 26. The section 25 has a slight telescopical engagement as at 29 with the lower section 26 and where this telescopical joint is formed rivets or the like are employed for securing the two sections together.
The dispensing cylinder or drum is provided with diametrically opposite longitudinally extending depressions or crevices 31 and 32 which are formed in the cylinder by depressing the wall thereof as shown. The shoulders 33 of these depressions or crevices face in opposite directions and in directions with the rotation of the cylinder. The dispensing cylinder or drum owing to the torsional strain of the coil spring is designed to rotate in the direction of the arrow 0; as indicated in Figs. 3, 4:, 5, 6 and 7. Furthermore the dispensing cylinder or drum is adapted to intermittently rotate and each time the cylinder or drum is limited in its movement, one of the crevices or depressions is adjacentthe exit opening 6 in the partition 2 while the other crevice or depression is opposite or adjacent the exit opening 35 of one end of the casing of the match safe.
By limiting the dispensing cylinder or drum so that the crevices or depressions are opposite such exit openings, a match is allowed to enter one of the depressions or crevices while another match is in a position to be dispensed from the other crevice or depression.
W hen a match is in engagement with either one of the depressions or crevices, a spring tensioned arm 36 (which is pivoted in a depression 37 of the wall of the cylinder as at 38) overlies the crevice or depression and holds the match therein. Each pivoted arm or dog 36 has a tail portion 39 which protrudes substantially laterally from the depression 37 in order to be in the path of a projecting pin 4E0 so that when the cylinder is approaching a position so that one of the depressions or crevices may receive a match passing through the exit opening 6, the projecting pin 40 contacts with the tail portion 39 and tilts the spring arm or dog 39 outwardly so that the end of the dog or spring tensioned arm will engage through the openings 41 and 6 of the partition walls 2 and 5 and behind the match so that by the time the crevice or depression is in registration with the exit openings 6 and 41, the spring arm or dog will pull the match into the crevice or depression. As soon as the match has been moved into the depression or crevice, the cylinder is limited in such position as will be hereinafter disclosed.
The dispensing cylinder or drum is prevented from retrograde movement when the coil spring is being wound by means 01 the spring catches 43 which are secured at 44 to the wall of? the compartment 4. These spring catches 43 have their ends engaging the shoulders 46 of relatively shallow depressions formed in the wall of the cylinder.
The dispensing cylinder or drum is limited in its movement to position the crevice or depressions 31 and 32 at their respective openings 6 and 35 by means 01 the slide dogs 47 and 48, which are mounted in guides 49 oi a recess 50 formed in. one wall of the easing of the match safe. These slide dogs are pivotally carried on an oscillatory plate or walking bar 51 as at 52. These slide dogs 47 and 48 protrude through the openings 49 of the wall of the recess of the casing oi the match safe and when one of the dogs is positioned therein, the other protmdes'further outwardly and vice versa. At all times the outer ends of both dogs protrude from the wall of the recess of the casing. These dogs are designed to engage an annular channel of the cylinder. This annular channel is formed in the wall of the dispensing cylinder or drum and is provided with cam sur faces 54 formed in the bottom or" the channel, and these surfaces terminate in shoulders 55 and 56. First one and then the other of the shoulders 55 and 56 is designed to be engaged by one oi: the slide dogs and then the other slide dog will engage the other shoulder 56 and the engagement of these shoulders with the sliding dogs is alternate so as to limit the dispensing cylinder or drum as previously set forth.
The drum or dispensing cylinder is all times under tension, that is to say, as long as the coil spring is wound and by means of the slide dogs engaging with either one of the shoulders 55 and 56, the cylinder or dispensing drum is held at rest. When one or the other of the slide dogs 47 and 48 is depressed, the cylinder or drum is released and allowed to make a half revolution, in order to carry a match around to a position opposite the exit opening and to bringthe other depression or crevice in registration with the exit opening 6 to permit another match to be received therein.
When one of the crevices or depress-ions is in the act oi approaching the exit opening 35, the tail portion 39 of one of the dogs or spring arms 36 will abut a projecting pin 58 carried by one wall of the casing of the match saie thereby throwing the spring arm or dog outwardly to permit the match to be dispensed from the depression or crevice.
The upper end of the upper section 10 of the shaft has a groove 59 in which a split ring 60 is mounted. The ring 60 is split so as to spring it rotatably relatively in engagement with the groove when assembling the parts. The upper wall of the. cylinder also moves in the groove of the section 10 of the shaft as indicated clearly in Figs. 1 and The lateral arms of the ends of the split ring are secured together as at 61. The split ring 60 revolves with the cylinder due to the fact that the kick arms or springs 62 engage the pins 63 which project upwardly from the upper end of the cylinder. Furthermore, the pins 63 act to tension the kick arms or springs 62. Secured, to one of the walls of the compartment 4 in a position adjacent the exit opening 35 is a plate 64 having a trip arm 65 which overlies the upper end of the cylinder so that either one of the crevices may pass under the trip arm or spring 65.
It will be noted that when a match is received in one of the crevices so as torbe carried half way around with the cylinder, the end of the match extends a short distance above the upper end of the cylinder so as to move in the path of the trip arm or spring 65. It will be noted that when the crevice in which the match is positioned approaches the trip arm or spring and is in the act of passing under the trip spring 65, the end of the match will contact with the trip spring thereby tilting the match to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 9 in which case the head of the match will be moved outwardly through the exit opening 35. When the end of the match is in the act of being tilted by the trip spring and being moved through the exit opening 35 the head of the match will contact with the striker 7 7 thereby lighting the match which is held in a position as shown in Figs. 3 and 9.
When the match is moved to this position when the cylinder is stopped, the operator may cause the lighted match to be removed. This may be accomplished by pulling upon the rod 66 or depressing it which will remove the detent arm 67 from the path of the kick spring or kick arm 62. This detent 67 is carried by the plate 64 and has its extremity partially overlying the marginal edge portion of the upper end of the cylinder. The detent 67 is yieldable to the extent of permitting the same to be removed from the path of the kick arm 62. The rod 66 is connected in any suitable manner to the detent 67 as shown at 68. When the detent 67 is moved from the path of the kick arm or kick spring 62, the kick arm or spring 62 will move with considerable force toward the end of the match and kick it from engagement between the trip' arm 65 and the end of the cylinder. T he trip spring 65 holds the match in the position shown in Fig. 3 while it is being used. After the match is used, the rod 66 may be pulled to remove the extremity of the detent 67 from the path of the kick arm 62, which will then actuate in the direction of the match and kick it from engagement between the trip sprin 65 and the upper end oi the cylinder thereby disposing of the burnt match. The trip arm or spring 65 is spaced sufiiciently above the end oi the cylinder as to permit the kick arm or spring 62 to pass thereunder as the match is kicked from en a einent between the kick arm or sprint to L La (55 and the end of the cylinder. The detent also has its end positioned on a plane below the trip arm or spring 65 so as to be in the path of the kick arm or snrin 62 as the 1.
cylinder and the upper section of the shaft rotate.
It will be noted that the lower parts of the openings 6 and are slightly enlarged as shown clearly at 77 so as to permit the heads of the matches to pass therethrough.
In the operation or the device the expansion follower spring automatically operates to feed the matches toward the ed eoi the opening as in the manner shown in r The dispensing cylinder is put under a tcr sional strain by winding the coil spring 532.
Then winding the spring, the cylinder is prevented from retrograde movement by means of the holding spring or catches d3 engaging the shoulders d6. The sliding dogs 47 and 48 are in an operative position while the spring of the dispensing cylinder or drum is being wound, hence preventin the dispensing cylinder or drum from rotat- I ing in the direction of the arrow litter the spring has been wound and it is desired to dis )ense match one of the slidin dogs i? or i8 is depressed which will withdraw the other sliding dog from the path of one of the shoulders 55. Just as soon as the other dog is pulled from the path oi the shoulder, the cylinder automatically rotates halt revolution.
Prior to the release of the cylinden'the spring tension'ed arm 36 had previously been moved inwardly and engaged a match and moved it into the pocket, crevices or depression as shown in Figs. 3 and 6. Then the dispensing cylinder is released by operating one or the other of the dogs a? and d8, the cylinder makes a halt revolution and as it approaches the position in which it is adapted to be limited in carrying a match around a halt revolution, the tail portion 39 of the spring tensioned arm 36 con tacts with the projecting pin 58, causing the spring tensioned arm to move outwardly,
leaving the match free to be discharged.
Instantly following the outward movement 'is to say a depression downwardly, will cause tie free end of the detent 67 to be moved from the path of the spring arm or s ring ('32 which will then act to conr, s met with the end at the match and dispense it trom the crevice.
I t is fully understood that the match teed: means that is to say the means for feeding the match into one or the other of the crevices and the match dispensing means as well as the other mechanisms are not to be limited to the eXact construction as shown for it is obvious that they may be varied. in minor details and yet permit of the same result as presented herewith. Furthermore the r leasing and limiting means may also be varied in construction as well as the make up of the dispensing ylinder and also it is obvious that the torsional tensioning means for the cylinder may be varied.
The invention having been set iorth, what is claimed as new and useful is 2-- 1. In a match safe and combined dispensing and striking mechanism therefor, a casing having a match receiving compartment, feeding means for the matches, an intermittent rotating cylinder having crevices for r ceiving and dispensing matches from the match compartment, means for moving the match into the crevices, means for tilting the match out of the crevice and holding it on one end 01 the cylinder at a point diametrically opposite where the match first enters the crevice, and means under torsional strain for actuating the cylinder.
2. In a device as set forth, a casing having a match compartment, a match dispensing mechanism comprising a dispensing cylinder having diametrically opposite match engaging depressions, means adjacent each depression to pick a match from the compartment, means for tilting the match out of the depression and holding it on one end of the cylinder, means for rotating the cylinder from a position where the match first enters the depression to a position where the match is adapted to be tilted from the depression, and means for automatically kicking the match from between the tilting means and the cylinder.
3. In a device as set forth, a casing having a match compartment, a match dispensing mechanism comprising a dispensing cylinder having diametrically opposite match engaging depressions, means adjacent each depression to picka match from the compartment, means for tilting the match out of the depression, means for rotating the cylinder from a position where the match first enters the depression to a position where the match is tilted out of the depression, and means for automatically kicking the match from between the tilting means and the cylinder, and means for limiting the dispensing cylinder intermittently at the time one match is picked and moved into the depression and when another match is being tilted from a second depression.

In a device as set forth, a casing having a match compartment, a match dispensing mechanism comprising a dispensing cylinder having diametrically opposite match engaging depressions, means adjacent each depressionto pick a match from the compartment, means for tilting the match out of the depression, means for rotating the cylinder from a position where the match first enters the depression to a position where the match is tilted out of the depression, means for automatically kicking the match from between the tilting means and the cylinder, and means for releasing and limiting the dispensing cylinder, whereby a match may be picked and moved into one of the depressions whereby another match may be tilted from another depression.
5. In a device as set forth, a casing having a match compartment and provided with a second compartment, a dispensing mechanism in the second compartment comprising an intermittent rotating dispensing cylinder, said cylinder having diametrically oppositely disposed match engaging depressions, means for intermittently rotatmg the cylinder, means for releasing and limiting the cylinder every half rotation, means adjacent each depression to pick the match from the match holding compartment, means mounted on the wall of the second compartment and adapted to be engaged by a match, whereby it may be tilted from each of said depressions at the end of each half revolution of the cylinder.

In a device as set forth, a casing having a match compartment and provided with a second compartment, a dispensing mechanism in the second compartment comprising an intermittent rotating dispensing cylinder, said cylinder having diametrically oppositely disposed match engaging depressions, means for intermittently rotating the cylinder, means for releasing and limiting the cylinder every half revolution, means adjacent each depression to pick the match from the match holding compartment, means mounted on the wall of the second compartment and adapted to trip a match from one of said depressions at the end of each half revolution of the cylinder, and means for tripping the picking means to permit a match to enter one of said depressions at the end of each half revolution.

In a device as set forth, a casing having a match receiving compartment, feeding means for the matches, said casing having a second compartment, a dispensing cylin der mounted therein, a torsional tension means for the cylinder for intermittently rotating the same, said cylinder having diametrically opposite match receiving depressions, each when opposite the matches in the match compartment adapted to receive a single match, means adjacent the depression for picking the match from the compartment, the second compartment having means to dispense a match from each or" said depressions at the end of the half revolution of the cylinder, and means for releasing and limiting the cylinder at the end of every half revolution, whereby a match can be picked from the compartment and another match dispensed from one of the depressions. In a device as set forth, a casing having a match receiving compartment, feeding means for the matches, said casing having a second compartment, a dispensing cylinder mounted therein, a torsional tension means for the cylinder for intermittently rotating the same, said cylinder having diametrically opposite match receiving depressions, each when opposite the matches in the match compartment adapted to receive a single match, means adjacent the depression for picking the match from the compartment, the second compartment having means to dispense a match from each of said depressions at the end of the half revolution of the cylinder, and means for releasing and limiting the cylinder at the end of every half revolution, whereby a match wcan be picked from the compartment and another match. dispensed from one of the depressions, and means for tripping the picking meansv 9. In a device as set forth, a casing having a match receiving compartment, feed ing means for the matches, said casing having a second compartment, a dispensing cylinder mounted therein, a torsional tension means for the cylinder for intermittently rotating the same, said cylinder having diametrically opposite match receiving depressions, each when opposite the matches in the match compartment adapted to receive a single match, means adjacent the depression for picking the match from the compartment, the second compartment having means to dispense a match from each of said depressions at the end of the half revolution of the cylinder, and means "for releasing and limiting the cylinder at the end of every half revolution, whereby a match can be picked from the compartment and another match dispensed from one oi the depressions, and means for preventing retrograde movement of the cylinder when being wound and put under a torsional strain.
10. In a device as set forth, a casing having a match receiving compartment, feeding means for the matches, said casing having a second compartment, a dispensing cylinder mounted therein, a torsional tensionmeans for the cylinder for intermittently rotating the same, said cylinder having diametrically opposite match receiving depressions, each when opposite the matches in the match compartment adapted to receive a single match, means adjacent the depression for picking the match from the compartment, the second compartment having means to dispense a match from each of said depressions at the end of the half revolution cithe cylinder, and means for releasing and limiting the cylinder at the end of every half revolution, whereby a match can be picked from the compartment and another matchdispensed from one of the depressions, means in the second compartment to trip each picking means to allow .it to pick a match from the match compartment and means in the second compartment to trip each picking means to permit a match to be dispensed from each depressionat the end of each half revolution of the cylinder.

In a device as set forth, a casing having a match receiving compartment, feeding means for the matches, said casing having a second compartment, a dispensing cylinder mounted therein, a torsional tension means for the cylinder for intermittently rotating the same, said cylinder havingdiametrically opposite match receiving depressions, each when opposite the matches in the match compartment adapted to receive a single match, means adjacent the depression for picking the match from the compartment, the second. compartment having means to tilt a match out of each of: said depressions at the end of the half revolution of the cylinder, and means for releasing and limiting the cylinder at the allow it to pick a match from the match" compz ment and means in the second compertinent to trip each picking means to permit a match to be dispensed from each depression at the end of each half revolution of the cylinder, andmeans on the cylinder adapted to be tripped for dispensing a match from between the tilting means and the cylinder.
12. in a device for the purpose indicated, a casing having a match compartment, an intermittently revoluhle match dispensing cylinder having match receiving depressions, means on the cylinder to piclra match from the compartment and place it in either of said depressions, and means for tilting the match out of the depression and hold it on one end of the cylinder.

In a device for the purpose indicated, casing having match compartment, an intermittently revoluhle match dispensing cylinder having match receiving depressions, means on the cylinder to pick a match from the compartment and place it in either of said depressions, and means for tilting the match out of: the depression and hold it on one end of the cylinder, and means on the cylinder to be tripped for dispensing the match from between the tilting means and the end 01"- the cylinder.
