' therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to lroofing sheets more particularly designed for use upon refrigerator cars and similar structures. It is the object of the invention to obtain an upstanding weather-proofing flange surrounding a hatch opening or other aperture in the plate and the invention consists in the means for accomplishing such a result as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view of the flat sheet before the weather-proofing flange is formed thereon; v
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the sheet. with the turned upl flanges;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the corner section before engagement with the sheet; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sheetk with the corner section engaged therewith;
Fig. 5 is a crosssection showing the locking joint. l l
For weather-proofing roofing sheets it is usual to provide upstanding flanges at the margins thereof. Where upstanding flanges are placed at the outer edges of adjacent sides of the sheet, an integral corner can be formed by folding the metal. It is not, however, possible to form such an integral corner in a flange surrounding an aperture in the blank without drawing or expanding the metal to a greater degree than is practicable.
The water-proof, flange surrounding a hatch opening or other aperture in the sheet is formed by slitting the corners of the blank to permit of bending up the flanges without stretching or expanding the metal, and a complementary corner section is then engaged with'these flanges with a sealing joint.
In detail, A is the sheet in the center of which is arranged an aperture B for a hatch opening and which as shown, is of rectangular form. C are upturned flanges on the several sides of the opening which are formed from inwardly-extending portions of the blank diagonally slitted atfthe corners, as indicated at D. E is a complementary corner section, which is preferably formed of a sheet metal blank return-bent to form ay U-shaped cross-section and also to form angularly extending portions E and E2. This corner section can be engaged with the flanges C and then mechanically locked thereto, preferably by the use of.
a suitable tool for crimping or bending in a portion on each side of the corner, as
indicated at F. This would not, however,v
form a water-proof joint and I therefore solder the edges of the outer portion of the member E, as indicated along the bottom edge G and end edges I'I. The crimp F will lock the corner so as to relieve the soldered joint from any mechanical stress while the solder will form a water tight seal. The construction is, there-fore, just as weather-proof as where an integral flange surrounds the sheet.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. The combination with a roofing sheet, of upstanding bent flanges upon edges of the sheet at an angle to each other, said flanges being severed from each other at the corner, and a complementary corner section mechanically locked to said adjacent upstanding flanges and soldered to form a water seal. V
2. The combination with a roong sheet, of upstanding bent flanges upon edges of the sheet which are at an angle to each other, and a complementary corner section of inverted U-shaped cross-section `embracing said upstanding flanges and crimped into locking engagement therewith, the edges of said corner section being soldered to said sheet to form a water-proof joint.
3. The combination with a roofing sheet having an aperture therein, of upstan'ding corner section Overlapping the adjacent up-v standing flanges and mechanically locked thereto, said section being soldered at its edges to form a Water-proof joint.
4. The combination with a rooling sheet l5 having an aperture therein, .of upstanding bent langesfon angling sides of said. aperture severed from each other at the corner, and a complementary corner section of iI1- the outer' portion of said corner member being soldered to the sheet to form a Waterproof joint. v
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
DAVID W. HAWKSWORTH.
