PATENT OFFICE.
LAMP-SUPPORTIN G- DEVICE.
Original applicaton'led December 5,V 1919, Serial No. 342,586. Divided and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12,- 1921. this application. qled June 23, 1920. serial No. 391,128.
To all whom t may concern.' Be it known that I, FREDERIK G. WHIT- TINGToN,.a citizen of the United States, re-
siding in the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Supporting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
his application is a division of my pending application, No. 342,586, filed December 5, 1919. The invention of this present divisional application is an improvement in lamp supporting devices. It consists in the elements and features of construction shown and described, as indicated in the claims.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view'of a lamp or searchlight having supporting devices embodying this inventio Fig. 2 is a detail section at the line 2 2 on- Fig. 1. l FF ig. 3 is a section at the line 3-3 on 1g. v lFig. 4 is an elevation `looking in the direction of the arrow, 4, on Fig. 1. The vehiclelamp illustrated in the drawings, comprising the focusing reflector, l, cover glass,3, secured b y the ring, 4, at the front of said reflector, and inclosing a lamp bulb, has a tubular stem, 5, in which the lamp socket tube, 6, is mounted for which'the lamp is adjustably mounted in a holder, which, with the means of Vsuch mounting and of mounting said holder, will now be described.
. The usual support upon a vehicle for a lamp of this character, is a verticular member, such as a frame of a windshieldwof an enough to maintain any given adjust while permitting readjustment of the clamp ment aXiall of said stem. The detailed convadjacent to the lug,
automobile; and for attaching the lamp to such -a part there'are provided clamping jaws, 11, adapted to be drawn together by clamping bolt, 12. The jaws, 11, extend from a triangularly bent member lwhose sloping side portions, 13, are connected by a transverse portion, 14, from whose edges there are bent circular ears, 15, which eX- tend in planes perpendicular to the plane of Athe part, 14, and cover the edges of the sides,
13, of the triangplar outline mentioned, forming aboX-like structure, so that similar ears, 16, formed as hereinafter described, may be clamped against the" ears, 15, by a clamping bolt and pivot member, 17, which is provided with a spring washer, 18, and a friction washer, 19, permitting the parts to be clamped with considerable firmness so as to be frictionally held quite firmly in place while yet allowing of adjustmentabout the pivot, 17, without releasmg the nut of the clamping bolt.
The ears, 16, are formed as integral eXtensions of a cylindrical clamping member, 20, lembracing the tubular stem, 8, above mentioned, and provided with perforated lugs, 21, through which the ,stem of the clamp screw, 22, extends for securing the stem, 8, frictionally against rotation in t epart, 20. And at this point also, it may be understood, that the clamping is designed to be only firm adjustment,
about the axis of the stem 8, without f requiring release of the clamping screw, 22.
To permit such rotation of the stem, 8, within the member,l20, and at the same time pre- I vent itffrom being withdrawn longitudinally therefrom, a groove, 23, is formed in the stem, 8, and locking member, 24, is clamped in position on the screw, 22, said locking member having a projecting nose,25, engaing the groove, 23.
s indicated in Fig. 2, the part, 24, is secured between one of the lugs, 21,' and the head of the clamp screw, 22; and, as shown' im Fig. 1, the nose, 25, projects through a slot, 20a, cut in the member, 20, 21. The'slot, 20a, is of such length as to limit the-rotation of the member, 24, about the clamping screw, 22,
in one direction, but to. permit it to rotate out of engagement with the. groove, 23,
when the clamp screw, 22, is released, and the tubular stem, 8, is withdrawn from the clamp, 20, as indicated in Fig. 3.
When the lamp is thus disengaged from its support, it may be employed for various purposes, as in removing an injured tire orm'aking other repairs about the vehicle, sufiicient extra length of lead wires, 29 and y 30, being provided for this purpose.
j In replacing the stein, .8, in the clamping socket, 20, the vlocking member, 24, may be turned with its nose projecting into the cy-l lindrical space, and before the clamp screw,
22, is tightened, the parts will yield sufficiently to permit the` extreme end of the tubular stem, 8, to pass the nose, 25, the latter snapping into the groove, 23, as that portion of the stem arrives in Aregistration with it. Then by tightening the clamp screw, 22, the parts will be again assembled, and the light beam projected by thefocu'sing reflector, l, can be directed as desiredby4 swinging the lamp bodily, either about the axis of the bolt, 17, or else about the axis of the stem, 8, these two axes being perpendicular to each other; and there is thus pro- Eided a universal mounting for the lamp ody. Iclaim: j
1. In combination with a vehicle lamp provided with a supporting stem, a holder embracing said `stem and provided with a pair of perforated ears spaced apart, a
clamp comprising a pair of jaws formed innsmgwe tegrally yof the respective ends of a sheet metal member .folded at two places near the middle of`its length, to leave a transverse middle portion connecting the two jawcarrying parts, perforated ears bent from the edges from said middle portion on to the adjacent edges vof the j awcarrying part to provide bearing areav for the ears of thev stem holder which are lapped over them and a pivot bolt extending through the ears of both parts holding them in frictional engagement.l
2. In combination with a lamp body provided withcircumferentially grooved cylindrical stem, a holder embracing said stem i and including lugs spaced apart and connected by clamp screw, having head lor shoulder, and a locking member rotatively adjustable upon said clamp screw adjacent to its head or shoulder, and having a nose- FREDERIK Gr.
