Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
MARTIN L. BALLABD, OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO BALLARD, FAST &
' 00., 0F SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,402, dated April 1, 1873; application filed I March 10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, M. L. BALLARD, of Oanton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Handles or Handle-Holders for Saws and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of the handle or handle-holder as it appears when attached to a saw-blade. the handle or holder in perspective.
My saw-handle or handle-holder is made in one piece, except the thumb-nut, which, of course, must be in a separate piece. This, however, is not new independent of the special construction of the handle, and of its adaptability to saw-blades of differing widths or sizes, the readiness with which it is attached and detached, and the rigidity with which it is fastened to the saw.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawing.
A is the socket for holding the ordinary wooden handle. From this socket extend two horizontal arms, B B, which unite with a vertical piece, 0, that forms the screw-bolt by which the handle is fastened to the saw-plate 1). On the socket there is a stud or projection, a, against which the saw-plate presses Fig. 2 representsand is held laterally; and on the lower end of the vertical piece 0 there is an angular or other-shaped projection, c, which takes into a notch in the underside of the saw-plate, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The thumbnut b is recessed underneath, so as to leave a projecting rim, 0, and the top edge of the sawplate is notched so that this rim will work in said notches. The threaded portion f of the screw is long enough to admit of applying the handle to the varied sizes or width of saws in common use. The vertical piece 0 is upon one side of the saw-plate as well as the arms B. The projections a c are upon the opposite side of the saw-plate; and when the flange or projection e of the thumb-nut is screwed down tightly in the notches made in the top edge of the saw-plate, and the latter forced down so that its notch takes over the projection c, the handle and saw-plate are rigidly and immovably attached.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A saw-handle or handle-holder composed of the socket A, arms B, vertical screw-bolt or piece 0, and projections a, c, and 6, taking in to or bearing against the saw-plate, the whole constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
MARTIN L. BALLARD.
