Description

l. E. NAGLE.
N ut-Lucks. No.,l37,382. P'atentedAprilLlsm.
AM. mami/mammie co. 1w( osaomvf moms) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISRAEL E. NAGLE, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,382, dated April 1, 1873; application iiled Y January 21, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISRAEL E. NAGLE, of New Orleans, in the parish oi' Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is especially designed for holding the single nuts of bolts; and consists of a ilexible piece of metal of peculiar shape which is employed in connection with a bolt of peculiar construction, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a view in elevation of the nut-lock complete, and the remaining figures views of the parts of the nut-lock separated from each other.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to fully describe its construction.
A represents the bolt, which is ofthe usual construction, with the exception thatit is provided with a longitudinal recess, a, Fig. 3, or a at portion, a', Fig. 2. B represents a washer, consisting of a iiexible piece ot' metal cut in such a manner as to form the wings or legs b b and tongue b', as shown. C represents the nut, of the usual construction.
The manner of using my invention is as follows: 'Ihe bolt is placed in position in the usual manner; the tongue b of the piece B,
having been bent at right angles to the remainder ot' the plate, is placed in the recess, or on the dat portion of the bolt, in such a manner as to extend inward from the end of the bolt, so as not to interfere with the freemovement of the nut, the main portion of the piece Brestin g against the article to be held. The nut is then screwed into place, and the ends of the one or both wings b b bent over the inner edge of the nut, as shown in Fig. l. When thus bent it will be observed that the nut is securely held from turning.
The described invention can be produced cheaply and be readily used. It can be readily attached or removed without taking off the nut.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe combination of the lock-washer B having a tongue, b, with the bolt A having its shank faced or grooved to form a bearing for said tongue and the nut C, when constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
This specification signed and witnessed this`
