HOW/W217 M L311/5 wi/lwwao %Z, Z M-WL alibi/Aug UNITED STATES HOWARD M. SWEET, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PLOW.
Application filed October 15, 1917.
Z '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD M. SWEET, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Flows, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to plows, and its ob ject is a plow in which the share, mold board, etc., may be set an angle to the plovg beam.
In the usual hand operated plow, the plowman either holds the plow so that the landside is in a vertical plane or atan angle thereto. Under the various conditions, as is hereinafter described with the usual power operated plow such a manipulation is impossible, and by means of this invention the plow may be fixed at the an le desired.
n object of the invention, therefore, is a single and efficient arrangement of the parts to fix the position of the plow relative to the beam. The beam and plow proper being pivotally connected, means are provided to hold the plow in set position.
These and other objects and the several novel features of the invention in its preferred form are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a plow embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation showing the plow set with the landside in a vertical plane.
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the plow set at an angle.
Fig. 4 shows an alternative of adjusting means.
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are diagrams indicating the result arising from plowing with the plow portions set at various angles relative to the beam.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the drawing and specification.
The beams 1 may be of any desired con struction, it being essential to this invention that the beam be held from transverse movement or side twist relative to the plow.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 5, 1921.
Serial No. 196,601.
The lower end is provided with a hub member 2 having a central aperture in a line parallel with the beam, as will be understood from the drawing. A frog 3 is bolted to the landside 4 of the plow, which is pro vided with a threaded lug 5 at one'end and a lug 6 at'the opposite end apertured to receive the end of the hub 2. When the hub is in position a bolt is inserted through the central aperture, as will be understood from Fig. 1 and threaded into the lug 5 securely holding the plow and beam in pivotal relation. The landside share and mold board may be of any usual approved character, and the mold board is provided with a member 8 in which one end 9 of the turn buckle is pivotally secured. The beam 1 is likewise provided with a member 10 to which the opposite threaded member 11 of the turn buckle is pivoted. A nut 12 of the turn buckle connection may be operated to set the plow at the angle as indicated in Fig. 4, or at the angle opposite thereto, as indicated by a dotted line a or various positions within the limits of the apparatus.
Fig. 4 is a view of the plow similar to Fig. 4 showing any alternative means for setting the landside share and mold board of the plow at an angle to the beam and consists of a threaded socket 2O pivotally secured to the mold board. A squared shaft 21 is threaded in the socket 20 and the other end of the shaft is threaded in a socket 22 pivotally secured to the bracket 10 on the plow beam. The shaft 21 is provided with right and left hand threads at each end respectively so that upon turning the shaft in one direction the mold board and landside are drawn together and rotation of the shaft 21 in the opposite direction tends to separate them.
ground in plowing is turned as shown in Fig. 5 which is the usual position with grounds of some nature particularly sandy loam and the like. As the plow is turned at the angle indicated by the dotted line a in Fig. 4, the result is somewhat as indicated in Fig. 6, the plow cutting deeper on the landside edge than on that of the share. With the plow so set less power is required to operate the same, but with some character of grounds, particularly sod, the grass and weeds at the edges of the turned furrows soon grow up between the furrows, as indicated in the drawing and with ground be plowed whereafter the plow will continue to. turn the furrow in the desired manner without further attention on the part of the operator. T he desired'result is secured particularly by reason of connecting the land side and mold board in a fixed angular relation and pivotally supported as a unit relative to the beam. 7
Having thus briefly described my invention, its construction and utility, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a plow, a plow beam, a plow share, mold-board" and land-side, the plow'share and mold-board and land-side being secured in fixed relative position pivotedly supported to the beam to swing on a horizontal axis to vary the angle of theland-side relative tothe vertical, the construction permitting the positioning ofthe base of the landside on either side of a vertical plane for the purpose'described, and an ad ustmg device for securing the unit in the desired position.
the land side, mold board and plowishare of the plow being fixedly attached to the frog, and a turn buckle secured to. the beam and mold board adapted to hold the mold board, land side and share in adjustable relation with the beam.
4.111 a plow, a frog, a mold board and land side secured theretoin relative fixed relation, a beam, the frog being secured to the beam to swing on a horizontal axis, and an adjustable member for varying the angle of the'moild board and land side relative to the vertical.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification.
