HERBERT BLANDFORD, 0F El'all/IlEtA,A NEW YORK.
PARCEL-POST CONTAINER.
Apliiication ined June 14..
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT BLANDFORD, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parcel-Post Containers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part'of this specification. rlhe object of this invention isto provide a novel construction of foldable or collapsible box, constructed of some suitable flexible material, such as paper, preferably cardboard, and adapted particularly for use as a parcel post mailing box to transport Inerchandise, such as eggs.
More specifically, the object is to provide a box of this character which does not require the use of paste, mucilage, or the like, to retain it in closed or sealed position, and which does not require any fastening means,
such as paper fasteners, cords, or thelike,l
to maintain it in closed position.
A further object is to provide such a box which shall be exceedingly simple lin com struction and which may be folded from a collapsible position to an operative position for mailing by the exerciseof a minimum number of steps.
The invention .is clearly disclosed in an exemplary form` in the accompanying drawings, in which like` reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. Brieiy described: Y s
Figure 1 is a lan view of the blank beire being folde into the position shown in ig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the box partly folded,
Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view of the box in folded position ready for mailing,
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view,
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detailview of two of the interlocking portions of the box,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of the box as folded ready for mailing, and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary detail view ofone of the twovcomplemental fillers for the box,

which iiller is adapted to hold the eggs, or the like, in spaced relationship.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, and first to Fig. 1 thereof, which shows the blank before being folded into the position shown in Fig. 6, it will be seen that this blank is bent longitudinally along the dotted lines l and 2, extending from side to side of the blank. The blank is slit along straight lines 3 and 4, parallel with the sides of the blank, said slits 3 and 4 running from and connecting the lines 1 and 2. The area comprised between the lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 forms the rectangular bottom 5 of the box. At a vpoint intermediate of the length of each of the slits 3 and 4, the bottom 5 of the liox is cut away segmentally, as shown at Intersecting the cut- away portions 6, 6 are slits 7, 7, which, as shown, extend from the sides of the'blank to said cut-away portions, and parallel with the lines l and 2.
On each side of the slits 7, 7 the two sides of the blank are slit for a short distance, as
- shown at 8, 8, parallel with the slit 7.
The blank is additionally creased, or folded, along the dotted lines 9, 9, parallel with the lines 1 and 2, said lines 9, 9 being of a length which is equal to the distance between the slits 3 and 4, said lines 9, 9 being at points in the plane of the slits3 and 4. From the end of said lines 9, 9, the blank is slit, as shown at 10 10, extendin to the sides of the blank. ach side of t'e blank midway between the slit 10 and the dotted linepl is slit for a short distance, as shown at 11.
rlhe blank is also folded along the 4dotted lines 12, 12, intersecting the lines 9, 9 at the ends thereof, and runnlng from the ends of the slits 3 and 4 to the ends of the blank, as shown. The blank is creased, or folded, along the lines 13, 13, parallel with the lines 12, 12, and extending from two of the slits 10, 10 to one ofthe end edges of the blank, said lines 13,13 intersecting the slits 10, 10 at a point intermediate the length thereof.
The larger area 14 bounded by one of the lines 9, the intersecting ' lines 12, 12 and the edge 15 of the blank, constitutes the top of thel box when the blank is folded, as shown in Fig. 6. I
The areas of the blank bounded by the dotted lines 9, 12, 12, and 1, and the lines 2, 9, and 12, 12 constitute the side walls Q Levaeee 16, 16 of the box when the same is folded into the position shown in Fig. 6.
In folding up the blank from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the ultimate position shown in Fig. 6, the side walls 16, 16 are bent up and the flaps 17, 17 are turned inward so as to bear against the inner surface of the bottom 5 of the box, as shown in Fig. 2. The extensions 18, 18 of said flaps 17, 17, constitute the e'nd walls of the box, as shown in Fig. 2. In this position the tongues 19, 19, formed by the slits 8, 8, are overlapped, so as to make an interlocking connection for the flaps 17, 17, which rest upon the bottom 5 of the box. Also the tongues 20, 2O formed by the slits 11, 11, are overlapped, thus forming an interlocking connection between the two sections of each of the end walls 18 of the box. rI`he Hap 21, forming the extension of the side wall 16 is then folded in to underlie the top 14 of the box, as shown in Fig. 6. The end tabs 22, 22 of said fiap 21, depend from the flap 21, as shown in Fig. 6, thus bearing against the end Walls 18 of the box. The depending side portions, or flaps, 23, 23 of the top wall 14 of the box bear against the outer surface of the end walls 18 and extensions 24, 24 of said flaps are folded inward between the iaps 17, 17 and the bottom 5 of the box, as shown in Fig. 4:.
A suitable filler, or egg separator, may be disposed Within the box, and, While such a filler may take various forms, I show in the drawings my preferred form, which comprises two strips of suitable material, such as cardboard, 25, 25 bent and folded along longitudinal lines 26 to form successive connected transversely V-shaped portions, as shown. These tl-shaped, or arched, portions are provided along the topsl of the arches with a series of cut-away portions 27, for the eggs.
"What I claim to be new is:
1. A foldable box, formed from a single sheet of material and comprising a top, a bottom, two side walls, and two end walls, said end walls being carried by said side walls, and each of said end walls being formed in two sections, provided with overlapping interlocking tongues, and exteni sions, carried by said end walls and disposed upon the inner surface of the bottom of said box and being provided with overlapping interlocking tongues.
2. A foldable blank box formed from( a single sheet of material and comprising a top and bottom, two side walls, and two end walls, each of said end walls comprising two sections, provided with overlapping, interlocking tongues, angled extensions carried by the bottom of said end walls, and resting upon the top of the bottom of said box, and provided with overlapping, interlocking tongues, and end flaps carried by said top and comprising each a portion bearing against the exterior of the adjacent end wall, and a portion extending between the box bottom and said extensions of the end walls.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature;
HERBERT BLANDFORD.
