I '0 all whomit may concern Be it known that I, KARL BAUMANN, a citizen of the Confederation of Switzerland, and a resident of Urmston, in'the county of Lancaster, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Turbines, of which the following is a specification.
In the specification of Unlted States Pat'- ent No. 1,286,201, granted December 3, 1918, there is described a removable nozzle box for steam turbines of the axial flow type which is closed at one end and has its other end through which the steam is admitted adapted to be secured to the side of the turbine cylinder, and is so constructed that it may be inserted endwise in a substantially tangential direction relatively to the moving blades through a comparatively small opening in the side of the turbine cylinder.
In certain cases the shape and construction of a nozzle box of the above kind may be such that it cannot conveniently or at all be inserted into the turbine cylinder from the exterior thereof. For example, the nozzle box may be of such a length as to make its insertion into place in this way diflicult or impracticable.
The present invention is a modification of the invention described in the specification of the application above mentioned and according thereto the nozzle box is placed in position within the turbine cylinder when the latter is open and is secured at its open end to the interior of the turbine cylinder or to an extension of the steam pipe or other part attached to the turbine cylinder.
A further modification relates to the means provided for holding the nozzle box in position within the turbine cylinder. An alternative arrangement to that described in the specification of United States Patent No. 1,286,204, consists, according to the present invention, in providing the nozzle box at a suitable point along its length with a lug or ear adapted to slide on a pin held in a projection from a fixed part of the turbine,
the interior of the cylinder for example, or inserted through the cylinder itself. Said pin is so located that while holding the nozzle box against movement toward and away from the moving blades, movement of said box in a longitudinal direction, due to differences in expansion, may take place.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanylng drawing which is a partly sectional new of the highpressure end of a steam turbine having nozzle boxes located and supported in position therein in accordance with the present invention.
The nozzle boxes 1 are inserted into the turbine cylinder when the latter is opened at the usual horizontal joint 2, said nozzle boxes being providedsat their open ends with flanges 3 which are-secured, as shown in connection with the two upper nozzle boxes, to the interior of the turbine cylinder 4 by bolts 5 so that the open ends of the nozzle boxes respectively register with the port openings 6, 7 in thecylinder and correspondmg steam supply pipes 8, 9. The lower nozzle box is secured, as shown, to a flange 10 on the steam pipe 11, said flange being bolted to the port-opening in the cylinder.
Two forms of the modified means for maintaining the nozzle boxes in their proper relative position within the turbine cylinder with reference to the turbine blades, are illustrated in the drawing, the means shown in connection with the two upper nozzle boxes comprising a lug 12 cast on the exterior of the nozzle box and furnished with a pin 13 adapted to slide in another lug 14 on the turbine cylinder- The lower nozzle box has a projection 15 cast on it which is provided with an orifice adapted to receive a pin 16 secured in the turbine cylinder 4.
I claim as my invention:
1,. In a turbine, the combination of a divided cylinder, a nozzle box, supporting and fastening means for the inlet end of the box including securing elements manipulative from the interior of the cylinder, and supporting means for the other end of the box allowing for expansion thereof.
2. In a turbine, the combination of a divided cylinder, steam inlet means therefor, a nozzle box adapted to be placed in communication with the inlet means and having a supporting flange, and fastening means munication with the inlet means and having a a supporting flange, fastening means cooperative with the flange and manipulative from theinterior of the cylinder for supporting the nozzle, and means for maintaining the box in proper position comprising relatively slidable parts whereby the box may expand and contract. 7
4. In a turbine, the combination of a divided cylinder having one or more openings, one or more steam supply conduits adapted to be secured in position relatively to the opening or openings, one or more curved nozzle boxes adapted to be positioned and removed relatively to the conduit or conduits when the upperportion of the turbine cylinder is removed, and fastening means manipulative from the interior of the cylinder for securing the box or boxes in position relatively to the opening or openings.
5. In a turbine, the combination of a divided cylinder, having one or more openings, one or more steam conduits secured in position relatively to said opemngs, one or more nozzle boxes adapted to be positioned and removed relatively to the conduit or conduits when the upper portion of the turbine cylinder is removed, said nozzle box or boxes having flanged end or ends, fastening bolts for said flanged end or ends manipulative from the interior of the cylinder, and means cooperative with said bolts to maintain the nozzle box or boxes in proper position comprising relatively slidable parts carried by the cylinder and box or boxes whereby the nozzle box or boxes may contract or expand.
6. In a steam turbine, the combination of a divided cylinder, steam inlet means connected to each portion of the cylinder, nozzle boxes, fastening means to hold the nozzle boxes in communication with the inlet means and manipulative from the interior of the cylinder, and means cooperating with the fastening means to maintain each nozzle box in proper position and comprising relatively slidable parts carried by each nozzle box and the cylinder portion to which it is secured whereby each nozzle box is free to expand and contract.
