Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 20, 1920. Serial No. 375,290.
To all fw from. it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK BARRAVECCHIA, a subject or' the King of Italy, residing at lVesterly, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and use-ful Improvements in Chimney Fire-Extinguishers or Flushers, of which the :following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for fiushing and extinguishing fires in chimneys.
The essential objects oi' my invention are to provide such means; to prevent start or headway of chimney iires whereby the adjacent and inflammable portions of the building would be endangered; to remove any accunnilation of soot without the necessity ci using a swab; to provide an adequate sprinkling member; and to attain these ends in an inexpensive and durable structure comprising a minimum number of parts.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists of such parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claim.

In the drawings 8 is the llue of a chimney 9 passing through the roof 10, and oors 11, 12, and 13 of a dwelling, and resting upon a foundation 14. In the chimney wall are the usual thimbles 16, 17, and 18. Mounted in the chimney is a vertical discharge pipe 2O supported by horizontal inlet pipes 21,- 22, and 23 passing through openings 24, 25, and 2G respectively in the chimney wall, successively above the second iioor 12, first floor 13, and below the latter. The inlet pipes are joined to the discharge pipe by the pipe unions 2S, 29, and 3() respectively, and are provided respectively with hand operated valves 31, 32, and 33. On the lowest inlet pipe 23 is a depending branch pipe 35 provided with a. drain valve 36. The inlet pipes extend from any usual convenient source of water supply. The inlet pipes conduct the water from the water main to the discharge pipe 20 under pressure and the valves upon the inlet pipes when manually turned admit or cut oil the supply to the discharge pipe. By this means my device is out of operation except when an emergency occurs in which case it is possible to immediately put the device into operation by turning one or more of the valves. The location of the inlet pipes being adjacent and above each fioor of the entire building makes it possible for a person standing upon the floor to operate the valve. The arrangement upon all the floors oi the house in every story makes it possible for the householder to setfthe device in operation froni whatever floor he happens to be when the fire is discovered. This is extremely important also in cases where the fire may have cut off the operator from access to one supply pipe, but not all..
The upper portion of the discharge or stand pipe has an inwardly and downwardly directed neck portion 37 provided with a lhreid 38 adapted to engage a discharging The head comprises an octagonal shank 40 provided with an axial bore or hole 41 hav ing a thread 42 engaging the thread 38. Integral with `the neck or shank portion 40 is a rectangular base portion 44 provided with a pyramidal flaring bore 45. A guide plate is provided having a body 47 of rectangular contour to correspond to the periphery of the portion 44, and a pyramidal upper face 48. Integral with its corners are spacing lugs 49. The latter abut against the member 44. The members 44 and 47 have at their corners plane and threaded openings 50 and 51 respectively to receive screws 53. There is formed by the spaced faces 48 of the plate 47 and the pyramidal faces of the bore 45 a quadrilateral, inwardly and downwardly disposed water way 54 which discharges the water laterally in sheets rather than as a spray. Inadequate results have been obtained in my experiments by the use of discharging devices wherefrom the water emerged as a spray, o-r where the device discharged as a sprinkler through periorations.
In operation, upon the discovery of a fire a person will operate the valve nearest at lratented Mar. .29, 1.921.
