STAYING 0F BOILER-SHEETS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented DIEU. 29, 1921.`
Application led June 12, 1919. Serial No. 303,717.
'To all fw 7mmz't may concer/t.'
Be it known that we, JOHN ROGERS FLAN- NERY and ETHAN I. Donns, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staying of Boiler-Sheets; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to improvements in the staying of boiler sheets and particularly to the manner of connecting the cap or closure for the head of a flexible staybolt structure, with a sheet of a boiler,-one object of the invention being to simplify the connection of the cap or closure for the rounded head of a staybolt, to the boiler sheet and obviate the use of connecting means exteriorly of the boiler sheet.
A further object is to connect a cap or closure directly to the boiler` sheet in such manner that a portion of said cap or closure shall extend into but not through the sheet and inclose the rounded head of a staybolt mounted on a seat in said sheet.
ith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view showing one embodiment of our invention. Fig. 2 is a face view of a portion of a boiler sheet showing the mounting for the cap or closure. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cap or closure, Figs. 1 and 5 are views of modifications, and Fig. 6 is a view showing the manner in which the cam lugs or flanges coperate.
1 represents a portion of a boiler sheet Vhaving a bolt opening 2 and the wall of the latter is formed with a curved seat 3 for the rounded head 4 of a staybolt 5 and the latter may be provided with a tell-tale hole 6 which terminates within the headed end of the bolt and its other end may be accessible from the opposite end ofthe bolt.
The outer portion of the bolt opening is enlarged to form a recess 7 sufficiently large in size to receive the peripheral portion 8 of a cap or closure 9,-a washer 10 being interposed between the portion of the cap or closure which enters said recess and the annular shoulder 11 formed by said recess.
The cap or closure 9 extends into but not through the boiler sheet and in order to firmly secure it in place, it may be provided with a plurality of lugs or flanges 12 having cam upper faces to engage similar lugs or flanges 13 which overhang the recess and made with cam under faces to cooperate with the cam faces of the lugs or flanges 12. To form the lugs or flanges 13, the wall of the recess 7 may be counter-bored.
In applying the cap or closure 9 to the sheet the peripheral portion will be inserted into the recess 7 (the lugs or flanges 12 of the cap passing between the lugs or flanges 13 of the sheet) and the cap then turned with the use of a suitable wrench applied to an angular enlargement 14 on said cap. When the cap is thus turned, by the coperation of the cam faces of the lugs or flanges 12 and 13, the said cap or closure will be pressed firmly against its seat on the washer 10 within the recess 7 of the boiler sheet.
Instead of counter-boring the wall of the recess 7 whereby overhanging lugs or flanges 13 are formed, the wall of said recess may7 be beveled so as to form, in effect, a dovetail groove, as shown in Fig. 4, andthe cap or closure will be provided with suitably shaped lugs or flanges to engage such groove. It will be understood that portions of the beveled wall 15 will be cut-away to permit the'insertion of the lugs or fianges on the ca In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 5 the wall of the recess 7 in the boiler sheet is threaded as at 16 and the peripheral portion of the cap 9 which enters said recess is threaded exte-riorly to engage the threads 16.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination of a boiler sheet having a bolt opening provided with a seat for the head of a staybolt, said boiler sheet having a recess around said bolt opening, and l a cap or closure entering said recess and co operating with the boiler sheet inwardly from the outer face thereof to Secure said in cap or closure to the boiler sheet. v
2. The combination of a boiler sheet having a bolt opening provided with a seat for ,Y the head of a staybolt, said boiler sheet having a recess surrounding the bolt opening and the seat for the head of the staybolt, said boiler sheet also having a plurality of cam flanges overhangng said recess, a cap or olosu're entering said recess and having a plurality of Cam anges coperable with the cam `flanges of the boiler sheet to secure the cap or closure to the boiler sheet.
In testimony whereof, We have signed 1C this specification 1n the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
