WATERING DEVICE FOR BABY CHICKS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed February 17, 1921.
To all 10 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, OLAUS E. ERIOKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful lVatering Device for Baby Chicks and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a watering device especially designed for baby chicks and the like, which is of simple, durable and inexpensive construction.
More particularly my invention relates to a device adapted to be secured to a Mason fruit jar or the like, whereby the device will prevent the rolling of the jar when it is laid on its side, and will hold the parts in a certain position, whereby a small amount of water will be exposed from which the baby chicks and the like may drink.
Still another object is to provide in combination with a cylindrical jar a combined cover member and trough device formed fronna single blank of material, the cover sealing the discharge opening of the jar and the trough device permitting the small amount of water to be exposed for drinking. The cover device has a support, which will serve as a base or a flange formed from a portion of its edge which will prevent the jar from rolling when it is laid upon its side, and hold the trough in proper position.
Still another object is to provide a combined cover and trough device made of a single blank of material, the trough being formed by cutting a slit in the material and by bending the material adjacent to the slit so that a wide opening lying in a substantially horizontal plane will be formed.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination oil. the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated. are attained, as hereinafter more fully set :lorth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device showing it attached to a jar ready for use; and
Fig. 2 is a central, vertical, sectional view taken through my device, a portion of the jar only being shown.
In the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate Specification of Letters Patent.

a cylindrical jar, preferably of the Mason type fruit ars now commonly used.
The jar 10 is provided with a reduced neck 1.1, which is provided with the exterior screw threads 12.
My device which serves as a combined cover, trough and support is made of a single blank of material A. The blank of material A is provided with a central or body portion 13 which covers the discharge end of the jar 10.
The body portion 13 is provided with an ani'uilar flange 14: which is provided with the screw threads 15, which co-act with. the screw threads 12 of the jar.
The neck of the jar is provided with a bead 16 against which a rubber band 17 may be placed. The free end of the annular flange lt is curved as at 18 so as to provide a flange which will rest against the rubber band 17.
The body portion 13, the flange 14 and the portion 18 form what I call the cover portion of my device.
The body portion 13 is provided with a rib 19, as shown in Fig. 1, which forms a reinforcing rib for the body portion 13.
Extending from a portion of the edge of the flange 1.8 is a support 20 which isprovidcd with a reinforcing rib 21.
The lower edge oi. the support 21' is designed to rest upon some flat surface or the ground. and serves a support for one end of the watering device.
The support has its side edges curved as at 22 so that its lower edge maybe comparatively larger for forming a substantial support. lVhen the device as shown. in Fig. l is being used the support 20 prevents the rolling of the jar when it is laid upon its side.
In order to itorni a trough or a means for getting access to the contents of the jar I out a slit into the body portion of the cover.
The material around the slit is bent in opposite directions so as to provide a wide opening 22 The material below the opening is bent oz'lt'wardly as at 24:, which provides a trough The materialabove the opening is bent ii'lwardly as at 26.
By bending the material in opposite clirections adjacent to the opening it is not necessary to bend. the material on either side to any great amount, and yet I am able to obtain an opening of suilicient size for the proper use of my device.
It will, however, be understood that it is not necessary to bend the material above the opening inwardly; but that the bending of the material below the opening outwardly would be sufficient to form the necessary trough.
In the p 'actical operation of my device, the jar 10 is placed on end and thesupply 01" water is placed therein, the combined cover, trough and support device then screwed on to the neck 11 and against the rubber band 17.
The jar is then placed on its side with the lower edge of the support 20 resting on some flat surface. This forms a support for one end 01" the jar and prevents it from rolling.
The water between the upper edge of the bent portion 24 and the lower edge of the bent portion 26 will be exposed. The chicks and the like are able to drink water from the portion which is exposed.
A supply or reserve amount of water will be held in the jar 10 away from any air. and as a result the water which is exposed will be kept fresh much longer.
As soon as the'water reaches the level of the upper edge of the bent portion 24, and the lower edge of the bent portion 26 a seal will be formed for preventing any flow of water from the jar.
It will be. understood that when the water within the jar has been partly consumed so that its upper edge is about level or below the trough opening, then the rear end of the jar may be raised on a support for slightly throwing the water forward so that practically all 01 the water may be consumed from the jar before it is necessary to refill.
It will be seen that my device is made of a single blank of material and is very simple and very inexpensive.
My device may be used with Mason type glass'jars of various sizes, which is an advantage because practically every household has Mason jars of some size.
Another advantage of my device is the support which'prevents the rolling of the jar and at the same time keeps the opening in proper relation with the remainder of the device so as to prevent any over-flow of water.
By making the device of a single piece of material it does away with riveting, soldering or spot welding, and makes it very easy to handle the device since it is made of only one piece.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of'the parts of my watering device without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and 1t 1s my intention to cover by my claims, any modified forms of structure, or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. An article of manufacture made from a single blank of material adapted to be used in combination with a jar having a re duccd screw threaded neck, said article including a cover portion having a screw threaded flange to cooperate with the neck of the jar, a support portion extended from the edge of the flange tor providinga support for the jar and preventing its rolling when laid on its side, and said cover portion being provided with an opening. the material on one side of the opening being bent in one direction from the body of the cover portion and the material on the other side of the opening being bent in the opposite. direction for permitting access to the interior of the jar.
2. An article of manufacture made from a single blank of material adapted to be used in combination with a jar having a reduced screw threaded neck. said article including a cover portion havinga screw threaded flange to cooperate with the neck oi? the jar a support portion extended From the edge of the flange for providing a sup- )ort for the jar and preventing its rolling when laid on its side, and said cover portion being provided with an opening, the material on one side of the opening beingbent in one direction from the body of the cover portion for permitting access to the interior of the jar.
3. An article of manufacture made from a single blank of material adapted to be used in combination with a jar having a reduced screw threaded neck, said article including a cover portion having a screw threaded flange to cooperate with the neck oi? the ur, a support portion extended from the edge of the flange for providing a support for the jar and preventing its rolling when laid on its side, and said cover portion being provided with an opening the material on the upper side of the opening being bent inwardly from the body of the cover portion for providing access to the contents of the jar. i

An article of manufacture made from a single blank of material adapted to be used in combination with a jar having a reduced screw threaded neck, said article including a cover portion having a screw threaded flange to cooperate with the neck of the a1, a support portion extended from the edge of the flange for providing a support for the jar and preventing its rolling when laid on its side, and said cover portion being provided with an opening, the material on the upper side of the opening being bent inwardly from the body of the cover portion and the lower side of the opening being bent outwardly for forming a trough for permitting access to the contents of the jar.
5. An article of manufacture made from a single blank of material adapted to be used in combination with a ar having a reduced screw threaded neck, said article including a cover portion having a screw threaded flange to cooperate with the neck of the jar, a sup port portion extended from the edge of the flange for providing a support for the jar and preventing its rolling when laid on its side, and said cover portion being provided with an opening, for permitting access to the contents of the jar, the parts being so arranged that a trough is formed adjacent to the opening.
6. An article of manufacture made from a single blank of material adapted to be used in combination with a jar having a reduced screw threaded neck, said article including a cover portion having a screw threaded flange to cooperate with the neck of the jar, a support portion extended from the edge of the flange for providing a support for the jar and preventing its rolling when laid on its side, and said cover portion being provided with an opening for 'forming a trough for permitting access to the contents of the jar.

An article of manufacture made from a single blank of material adapted to be used. in combination with a jar having a reduced screw threadedneek, said article including a cover portion having a screw threaded flange to cooperate with the neck of the jar, a support portion extended from the edge of the flange for providing a support -tor the jar and preventing its rolling when laid on its side and said. cover, a trough formed in the body of said cover portion said trough being in communication with the interior of the jar whereby the contents of the jar may be received in the trough, as and for the purposes stated.
8. An article of manufacture made from a single blank of material adapted to be used in combination with a jar having a reduced screw threaded neck, said article in eluding a cover portion having a screw threaded flange to cooperate with the neck of the jar, a support portion extended from the edge of the flange for providing a support for the ar and preventing its rolling when laid on its side the body of said cover portion being provided with a slot lying in a horizontal plane and parallel to one edge of the support portion, the material on the sides of the slot being bent in opposite directions for spacing the edges of the slot whereby an opening lying in a substantially horizontal plane will be provided for permitting access to the contents of the ar.
9. An article of manufacture made from a single blank of material adapted to be used in combination with a jar having a reduced screw threaded neck, said article ineluding a cover portion having a screw threaded flange to cooperate with the neck of the jar, a support portion extended from the edge of the flange for providing a support for the jar and preventing its rolling when laid on its side, the body of said cover portion being provided with a slot lying in a horizontal plane and parallel to one edge of the support portion, the body portion adjacent to the slot being bent so as to provide a space between the edges of the slot whereby access may be had to the contents of the jar as and for the purposes stated.
