In carrying out my invention I make use of any suitable slug trimming mechanism such as is illustrated in Patent No. 1,360,881, Nov. 30, 1920. The slugtrimming mechanism not hein a part of the present inventionV will not eillustrated or described.

`The `mold carrier Wheel 1li is of typical form and has the usual geared periphery 15 and fixed mold part 16.` .Within the usual cut-out portion 17 is arranged the adjustahle mold cap 18 'Which in the present improvement carries the guide pins 4:9 and 20. The cap 18 is heldin adjusted positions hy thespring-pressed pawls 21-21 which Vare articulated with the levers 22- -22 and normally kept in the position showninFig. 7 by means of springs 23--28.
Thelevers 22 are each zslidably-and revoluhly mounted at one end upon one oi the screws 24--24 which are secured in `the Wheel 14. The other ends of the levers are pivoted together upon the screw, 25 and the latter extends througha slot26 provided in the Wheel 111 and the end of said screw is threaded into the locking pin 27 which is pressing upwardly uponV one end of the lever 34 which is pivotally mounted as at 35 upon the cap 18 serves to press the other end of the leverr 84 downwardly and thus presses vthe edge of the hole 32 into the notch 30 and locks the pin 27 in its inward position. In its inward position, the surfaces of the outer end of the pin 27 are substantially in alinement with the surfaces of the subjacent tooth 36. The ends of the pawls 21 are arranged to engage with' a series of teeth 37-37 formed upon projections of the cap 18, as
vshown in Fig. 7.
Screws 38-38 are securedin the wheel 14 and they are provided on their inner ends witha'series of buttress rings 39-89. The beveled ends 40-40 of the slides 41-41 project into said rings andare normally Vkept therein by the pressure of springs, which Vare shown at 42 in Figs. 6 and 7.
There Vare two slides such as 41 in line with each other for each of the series of buttress rings 39 and there is a spring such as 42 'for each slide. This construction is adopted in order to provide for locking the cap 18 at each end upon two buttress rings.

rEhe spring 33 mounted in a hole provided in the adjustable mold cap 18 Four cam plates are rigidly secured to the pinion 50 and revolve therewith. These cam pla-tes have faces as at 5G which are substantially in alinement and the @am plate next to the pinion 50 is provided with a face 52, the next adjacent c: m plate is provided with a face 58, the next adjacent cam plate is provided with a face 54 and the last cam plate is provided with a face 55. The cam faces 52, 58, 54 and are located to co-aet with the index 57 as hereinafter explained.
The index 57 is inserted in a recess provided in the mold part 1G and projects into the hole 58 which is provided ior clearance around the four rams. The hole 59 is pro vided in the mold part 1G for clearance around the pin 49. The index 57 is shown dotted in Fig. 10 in order to show its relation to the faces 52, 53, 54 and 55.
rlhe pawls 21-21 not only lock the vadjustable mold cap 18 but also .serve to press said cap against the liners, such as shown iu Fig. 8, and in addition, serve to press one ot the cams having the laces 52, 53, 54 or 55 against the index 57.
rlhe gear sector GO is revolubly mounted upon the pin G1 and the latter is rigidly mounted in the mold cap 18. rllhe gear sector 60 is provided with an arm G2 which is located opposite the slot G8 provided in the cap 18.
The spring 64 is revolubly mounted at one end upon the pin G5. the latter being rigidly secured in the mold cap 18 and the other end of said spring` is secured within a hole provided in the arm G2; the normal tendency olf said spring being to keep the arm G2 in the position shown in Fig. 10, with the lowest tooth of the sector resting against theV lower end of the spring G4, the latter 'forming a stop for said sector.
A curved housing G6 is secured upon the wheel 14 and a Curved slot G7 in the interior ot said housing is in alinement with a similar curved slot in the wheel 14. The bottom of the slot in the wheel 14 is closed by the plate G8 which is secured to the wheel 1lby suitable s'-rews.

VThere are six liners mounted in the slot G7, the liner G9 nearest the mold part 16 being composed oi tour laminre and the other liners 70, 71. 72. 73 and 74 being each composed of two laminar. The laminae forming each liner are preferably soldered together at their ends so that the laminee may have mutual freedom to render them flexible, and the lliexibiliy thereof is further incr ased by providing in each lamina a plurality ot ho'les such as 75 and a slot 7G. The laminac are parallelograms in profile and near one end, each lamina guide the laminas between the part 16 and` the cap 18, the guide plate 80 is securedto the wheel 14 by the screw 81, and the screw 82 threaded into the wheel 14 bears against the outer end of the plate 80 and serves to` maintain the pressure of said plate against the laminae.
In order to operate the looking pin 27, as hereinafter described, the stop 83 is secured to any fixed part of the machine and the gear wheel 84 is revolubly mounted upon the pin 85 which is also secured to any fixed part of the machine.
In order to provide for the introduction of the proper number of liners between the part 16 and the cap 18, for the introduction of said liners to the proper extent therebetween, for the opera-tion of adjustable spacing mechanism and the locking mecha nism hereinbefore described, the following instrumentalities are provided v 86 is a guide which is secured in any suitable manner to some fixed part of the machine and said guide is provided with a pair of gibs 87-87 upon which slides freely the carrier block 88. The carrier block 88 is provided with suitable bearings 90-90 in vided witha spring pressed pawl 96 which engages with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 93. he pawl 96 may be removed from engagement with the wheel 93 by `pulling out the head 97 of the pawl'96. 1 v
The handle 95 is also provided with Va spring pressed pawl 98 and the latter engages with the teeth of the ratchet sector which is rigidly secured to the carrier block 88. The teeth of the ratchet wheel 93 are trenchant in a counter-clockwise direction as `shown in Fig. 5 and the teeth of the ratchet sectorf 99 are trenchant ina clorlwise direction as shown in said figure.
The torsion of the springs 92-92 is such as to turn the shaft 89 in a countencloclr wise direction whenever the pawl 98 is re` suitable bearings in which is j revolubly` mounted a shaft 103 carrying at its upper end the hand wheel 104. The shaft 103 also carries the beveled gear 105 and the latter may be provided on its `upper fare with` the pointer 106 to indicate the extent of the in- Suitable indices which co-act with troduction of the laminas between the part 16 and the cap 18 as hereinafter explained.
The beveled gear 105 meshes with the bevel pinion 107 which is secured upon the shaft 108, the latterI being revolubly mount ed in suitable bearings provided in the adjusting bar 102.
The shaft 108 is provided with a spiral groove 1.09 and the nut 110 slides freely upon the shaft 108 and is provided with a spiral thread which fits in the groove 109.
The nut 110 is formed integrally with the liner selecting arm 111 and the latter is provided with the recesses 123 and 124, the former being provided for the reception of the feeler plates 113, 114, 115j 116 and 117', andthe recess 124 being provided for the reception of the feeler plates 118, 119, 120, 121 and 122, and said feeler plates are retained within said recesses by the bottom plate 112. One of the feeler plates is shown in perspective in Fig. 13` and all of the feeler plates are similar in profile, each `being provided with a finger 125 formed in tegrally with an arm 126 and on the end of the latter the spring 127 is clamped.
A groove 129 is provided in the adjusting bar 102 and above the center of said groove the spring 130 is secured to said bar. The groove 129 is provided in order that the liner selecting arm `111 may be moved from the angular position with reference to the bar 102 shown in Fig; 5 to the `angular position with reference to said bar shown in Fig. 16.
The bar 102 is provided with a rib 131" which extends the length thereof `and is located to `enter the groove 132 formed in the adjustable mold cap18 :The rib 131 is ar ranged to enter the groove 132 in order to set the cap 18 and also, to operate the levers 34 and 43-43 as hereinafterexplained.
The bar 102 is provided with an arm 133 which is located to strike the arm 62 of the` gear sector 60, fora purpose hereinafter explained. v v
A pin 134 is secured to the carrier block 88 and the link 135 is pivoted thereupon. The link `135 is articulated bymeans of the pin 136 with the lever 137. and the latter is cured to theshaft 138 which is formed in` tegrally with the handle 139. The shaft 138 is revolubly mounted in bearings 140-140 secured to the guide 86, y i v i,
The operation of my improved `slug cast` ing machine is as follows `If certain `of the liners` are between the part 16 and the cap 18 (as shown inFigs. 1
and 7), the handle 139 to be moved to bring the appropriate feelerplates `over said liners, and the handle 95 is to be moved to bring said feeler plates into engagement with said liners, and also to introduce the rib 131 into the groove 132. The wheel 104 Vis then to be turned to move the liners 69,
' and it is to be noted that when the rib 131 is introduced into the groove 132, as just explained, the arm 133 will come into engagement with the arm 62 of the gear sector 60 and will move the pinion 50 so that the cam plates having the faces 52, 53, 54 and 55 are rotated so as to be disengaged from the index 57; It is also to be noted that the rib 131 will come into contact with the lever 34 and will move said lever to remove the edge of the Vhole 32 from engagement with the notch of the pin 27, thus allowing the springs 29-29 to move the pin 27 outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 7 thus removw ing the pawls 21--21 from the series of teeth 37-37 attached to the cap 18. The

47-47 of the locking levers 43 and removes the. beveled ends40-40 of the slides 41-41 from the buttress rings 39-39 of the screws 'The handle 139 is then to be moved so as to move the cap 18 the proper distance from the part 16 so that the opening therebetween willbethe proper width for the slug that is next to-be cast. Y
While I have shown thehandle 139 for moving the cap 18,it is to be understood that any suitable mechanism may be employed in lieu of the handle139.
When my improved slug casting machine is used in connection 'with the Mergenthaler linotype machine, 'the mold cap 18 would be connected with the ordinary trimming` knife of said machine so that it would move in unison therewith, as set forth in U. S. Letters Patent 1,360,881, Nov. 30, 1920.
When the mold cap 18 is set as just explained, the proper relation will be established between the approximate number of feeler plates 113 to 122 inclusive and the corresponding liners 69 to 74 inclusive.
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be noted that there are two feeler plates 117 and 122 which are substantially equal in width to three of the liners 72, 73 and 74, and that there are eight feeler plates `113 to 116 inclusive and 118 to 121 inclusive, each of which is substantially equal to the thickness of one of It is also to be noted that the liner 69 is equal in width to two of the other liners; consequently, the total width of the liners 69 to 7 4 inclusive is equal to the total vwidth of the feeler plates 113 to 117 inclusive and 118'to 122 inclusive. v
.If the -cap has been set as, just described to mold a slug which is equal in width to the width of the liner 69, the relation of the parts is such that the right face of the feeler plates 117 and 122, (see Fig. 4), will be substantially in line with the right face of the liner 69. l
1t is to be understood that when the handle 139 is moved as before explained, the wheel 104 is to be turned so that the arm 111 will be moved against the pressure of the spring 130 from the position shown in Fig. 5 to the position shown in Fig. 16 in order to remove the feeler plates from the path et' the liners while the mold cap 18 is heilig set.
After the mold cap has been set as just explained, it is evident that the lingers 1125 of the feeler plates will enter into engagement with the faces 78-78 formed on the liners. The wheel 104 is then to be turned in order to move the arm 111 along the bar 102 and thus introduce the liner, (69 in the present instance), the proper distance between the part 16 and the cap 18. r1`he distance said liner is introduced is indicated by the pointer 106 secured on the adjusting bar 102 and the indicia shown in Fig. 1 upon the bevel gear 105. The handle 95 is then to be moved to remove the fceler plates from engagement with the liners, the rib 131 from engagement with the sides of the groove 132 and they arm 133 from engagement with the arm 62 of the gear sector 60, and the handle 139 is then to be moved to withdraw the adjust ing bar 102 and attached parts from the path of the mold carrier wheel 14 and its attached parts. Vhen the rib 131 is removed from the groove 132, as hereinbefore explained, said rib is removed from contact with the faces 47-47 of the levers 43-43 and, consequently, the springs 42 force the beveled ends 40-40 of the slides 41-41 into the buttress rings 39-39 and thus lock the cap '13 in position. At the same time, the rib 131 is removed from contact with the lever 34 and the spring 33 moves the detent 31 so that the edge of the hole 32 is in proper relation to co-act with the notch 30 to lock the pin 27 as hereinafter explained.
When the arm 133 is removed from the arm 62, as hereinabove explained, the spring 64 revolves the pinion 50 and brings one of the faces-52, 53, 54 or 55 into engagement: with the edge 140a of the index 57 and, conse uently, the adjacent portion of the cam p ate next to the cam plate whose face contacts with the edge 141 will overlie the index 57 on the face thereof next to the cap 18.
The cam plates having the faces 52 to 55 inclusive are to be made of such thicknesses that when they overlie the front face of the indexr 57, as before explained, they will prevent the abutting face of the mold cap 1S (as shown in Fig. 7) from moving closer to the abutting face of the part 16 than the thickness of the liner 69 and, consequently,
parallelism of the slug space is assured.
Then the adjusting bar 102 is moved to bring the right faces of the plates 117 and 122 (see ll) into alinement with the dotted line 141, then the feeler plates 117 and 122 will be in position to move the liners G9 and 70 and the appropriate face Will malte contact With the edge lll-0u of the index 57 and the lovver end of the abutting face of the cap 18, (see Fig. 7), Will be prevented from moving closer to the abutting :face of the part 16 than the sum of the widths of the liners 69 and 70 and, consepiently, parallelism of the mold space is assured, as before explained.
The same effects obtain when the right faces of the feeler plates 122 are moved to alinement with the dotted lirios 142, 143, 144 and 145 excepting that there Will be a corresponding greater number of liners introduced Within the mold space. y
YAfter the Width of the mold space has been set, the appropriate number of liners introduced therein and the adjusting bar 1.02 moved backvvardly, as just explained, the mold carrier wheel 140 is to be rotated in any approved manner, and during the rotation of said Wheel, the locking pin 27 comes into engagement With the teeth of the j gear 84 and said pin is moved toward the lett from the position shown in Fig. 7 against the pressure of the springs 253-29. The movement of the locking pin 27 brings the teeth of the pavvls 21-21 into engagement With the series of teeth 37--37 attached to the mold cap 18 and presses the inner face oit' said.. mold cap against the liners in the mold space and also presses the appropriate cam plate against the index 57, thus preventing the molten type metal from squirting between the liners and the abutting faces of the part 16 and cap 18.
Then the pin 27 is pushed inwardly, as just explained the edge of the hole 32 moves in to the notch 30 of said pin and thusthe parts are locked in position.
During the continued motions and dwells of the carrier Wheel 14, the slug is cast and trimmed and the carrier Wheel returns to the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 7 and the .cycle ci operations may be repeated indefinitely with the same liners in the mold space.
When, however, it is desired to change the number of liners in the .mold space or to vary the extent of their introduction therein, the adjusting bar 102 is to be moved, the liners in the mold space are to be moved and the cycle of adjustment hereinbefore explained is to be performed so as to introd uce the desired number of liners between the mold space to the desired extent, and then at the beginning of the rotation of the mold carrier Wheel 111, the mold cap 18 yis pressed against said liners and the further operation of the machine continued.
From the foregoing, it is evident that I have provided a simple and efficient means for varying the Width and length of the mold casting space to any desired extent combined with the ability to quickly change `the Width and length as desired.
I claim 1. A liner for use in slug casting, said liner comprising a plurality of laminae secured together at their ends.
l 2. A liner for use in slug casting, said liner comprising' a plurality of laminae secured together at their ends and provided with perforations.
3. liner for use in slug casting, said liner comprising a substantially parallelogrammic body provided with a pair of projections and a point therebetween.
4. In a slug casting machine, a mold havmg a fixed part and an adjustable part in combination with buttress rings and a slide having a beveled end to enter said rings.
5. In a slug casting machine, a mold having a fixed part and an adjustable part in combination with buttress rings, a slide having a beveled end to enter said rings and a, spring for pressing said end into said rings.
6. In a slug casting machine, a mold having a fixed part and an adjustable part in combination with buttress rings, a slide having a beveled end to enter said rings, means for moving said end into engagement with said rings and means for withdrawing said end from said rings.
r. In a slugr casting machine, a mold having a fixed part and an adjustable part in combination with buttress rings, a slide having a beveled end to enter said rings, a spring for pressing said end into said rings and means for withdrawing said end 'from said rings.
8. In a slug casting machine, a mold having a iixcd part and an adjustable part in combination with buttress rings, a slide having.;l a beveled end to enter said rings, a spring for pressing said end into said rings, a lever for removing said end from said rings and a bar for adjusting said adjustable part and operating said lever.

In a slug casting machine. a mold having a fixed part and an adjustable part in combination with buttress rings, a slide having a beveled end to enter said rings, a spring for pressing said end into said rings, a lever for removing said end from said rings, a groove in said adjustable part, an end of said lever extending into said groove, and a bar provided With a rib for entering said groove to adjust said adjustable part and operate said lever.

In a slug casting machine, the combination with a guide, and a carrier block slidably mounted thereon, of an adjusting bar slidably mounted on said block, an adjustable mold part, means for moving said bar on said block to engage said bar With said part, and means for moving said block in said guide to adjust said part.

In a slug casting machine, the combination with a liner provided with a pair of projections, of a pair ot feeler plates in line with said liner, each of said plates having a finger, one finger contacting with one projection to move the liner in one direction and the other finger contacting With the other projection to move said liner in the opposite direction.

In a slug casting machine, the combination with a liner provided With a pair of projections, of a pair of feeler plates in line with said liner, each of said plates having a finger, one finger contacting with one projection to move the liner in one direc tion and the other finger contacting with the other projection to move said liner in the opposite direction, and springs for fore ing said fingers into engagement with said projections.
