An object of the present invention. 1s to provide a suspended, flat roo-f construction which is equally well adapted for old and new furnace installation and which permits of ready removal and replacement of tiles, separately, by unskilled -labor and which further permits, in the case of breakage of tile supporting elements, repair of same without removal of any considerable number of tiles. Another object is to provide asus-` pended, fiat roof construction"` possessed of flexible characteristics whereby stress and strain, due to expansion andcontraction, is reduced to a minimum thus eliminating spalling or cracking of the working faces of the tiles. A further object is to provide a suspended, flat roof construction in which is embodied novel devices for supporting those tiles in immediate juxta osition tothe curtain wall of a furnace. still further, object is to provide a suspended, flat roof construction which is of simple, comparatively inexpensive, practical and efficient structure whereby the commercial value of a furnace roof construction, of the 4character under consideration, is materially enhanced over like constructions now in use. Other and further objects relate to the provision of.

For illustrative purposes ll have shown my improved suspended, `dat roof construction as applied to a boiler furnace of the ty e in which a traveli'n y grate-Stoker is emp oyed althou h obviois,ythe roof of the invention is app icable top various types of furnaces. Generally stated thereof com 'rises a plural- `ityofindividually separable ti esso suspended that theunder surface thereof is transversely i Mld parallel with the hedor door of the furnace as shown in Fig. 2, but preferably has a variable distance from the furnace bed in a longitudinal direction as shown in Fig. 1. By so suspending the tiles, a uniform area is maintained across the furnace and a prol gressivel to secure the parts together to form beams A. In Fig. 1, four of such beams are illustrated and they are so spaced that one is adjacent the furnace front, one adjacent the furnace curtain wall 16 and two are disposed in uxtaposition to one another intermediate the first mentioned beams. Hung for longitudinal movementbetween adjacent pairs of beams are a plurality of tile osupports B. The supports each comprise elongated, spaced members 17 of L-shaped cross-section, pivotally carried, as at 17', by means of arms having cross-pieces 18 which span the space between the ledges ofthe channel irons 13.
Suspended from each support B, by means of hangers 19, are a plurality of abutting tiles 20. rlhe tiles as suspended for each support form a group and the combined groups are in abutting relation considered both laterally and longitudinally of the furnace, -see Figs. 1 and 2. Tith more part-icular relation now to Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, each hanger 19 comprises an I-shaped member the v upper part of which is adapted to spanihe space between ledges of a support B and the lower part of which is adapted to enter and cooperatively engage with a slotted and recessed opening in a tile top. As clearly shown in Fig. 6, a tile top .is centrally slotted as at 21, the walls of said slot being vertically disposed. Such slot communicates at j its bottom with a recess 22 of annular formation. A hanger is first inserted Within a tile slot as vshown in Figs. 4 and and then moved around its vertical axis 90 so that the lower cross-arm of the hanger engages beneath the ledges 23 formed bya slot and annular recess. Thus interlooked with Arespect to a tile, a hanger is so positioned with respect to a support that the upper cross-arm of a hanger rests on the lower ledges of said support. Each tile is hung as a unit and the entire roof is movably suspended. rlhus the tiles are not rigidly held and stress and strain is eliminated. The side walls 12 of the furnace have shoulders or offsets 12' upon which rest the outmost tiles of each transverse row. Between a tile so located and a vertical wall of the furnace is v'present a filling 12" of compressible material, as asbestes, in order to permit expansion of give satisfactory and reliable results, it yis to 30 tiles without undue compression and further provide a gas tight joint'. The construct-ion shown in Fig. 7, differs from the above construction only in the shape of the support B and its supporting arm.
As shown in Fig. 8. the support B comprises an inverted l'shaped beam 26 suspendedv from which is a hanger 19 which is also of inverted ll'shape. Connecting a hanger and beam are members 2T each clamped to a hanger at one end and flanged to engage over a beam ledge at its other end.
As shown in Figs. 9 and 1f) the tiles are suspended directlyv from the supports B. Each tile is provided with a reduced head 2S having vertical faces and undercut portions 29. The flanged portions of the support engage with such undercut portions. By this construction while'v certain of the tiles cannot be removed without removal of cer tain other tiles no considerable number of tiles require to be removed to effect repairs.
Common to all the above described types of hangers and tiles is the rear tile supporting structure illustrated in Fig. l and in Figs. 11 to 13 inclusive. Resting upon the fianges of each beam B and projected rearwardly therefrom is a `member 30 the free end of which terminates in a curtain wall rest 31. Each member 30 is rigidly fixed. as at 32. to a beam and the beam parts are provided with lips 33, with the. underside of which lips the bifurcated or forked end of the member engages to prevent depression of the rest 31 under the weight of the curtain wall. The last three tiles of each row are supported by a member 30. Of these tiles, tile 20 is supported by a pair of hangers 19 the upper ends of which are hook-shaped as at 19 to engage over the fianged portion 34; of a member 30. The meeting faces of tiles 20. and a pair of tiles 20 are cut away as at 37 so as to overlap as clearly shown in Fig. 11, so that in effect the tiles 20 are' seated upon a tile 20. It will be understood that a pair of tiles 20 'equal the width of a tile 20. ln order to maintain tiles 20 in such seated position two hooks 35 are caused to engage around hangers 19 and are caused to engage within a recess 36 in the top of a tile 20 at their opposite ends thereby tying together the three last tiles of each row.
'It will now be apparent that l have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while -lf have in the present instanceshown and f [described .the preferred embodiment .1 thereof which has been found in practice to Lorente be understood that the same is susceptible of asupport from which said tiles are susmodiication in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

A suspended rdoi construction of the character stated comprising aplurality of transversely disposed channel irons arranged in pairs, plates for spacing adjacent channel irons which plates are secured thereto to form vtherewith a beam, arms depending trom each beam each arm having 'a crosspiece which spans the space between the ledges of a beam, a tile support hung for longitudinal movement between adjacent pairs of beams each tile support being piv oted at its outer end to one ot said arms, a plurality ot hangers carried by each support and a tile removably carried by each hanger.
