Description
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
ARIEL oDELL, or Beerens, onto.
' IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137.234, dated March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. ODELL, of Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists of the adjustable slides a, spiral-spring clamp b, hooks c, spiral springs e, adjusting spring-board f, set screw or screws g, corrugated roller H, latches j, and small rollers I, frame A, and crank L, and the combination and arrangement thereof', substantially as shown and described.
A is the frame of the device, which is composed in part of the longitudinal pieces M, N, and P, and the vertical pieces Q. The longitudinal pieces N have provided, respectively, in one end thereof an opening for the reception of the metallic slides a., and said pieces may be either wooden or metallic, as preferable in practice. nThe slides a are provided with the projections a', and through orifices therein are securely fastened the ends of the wire spiralspring clamp b. b is a spiralspring clamp, and each end thereof projects through orifices --provided, respectively, in .the slides. Said clamp is formed of stout wire, and has clutched thereto, at r, the spiral spring s, which latter is formed, at the lower extremity thereof, into a ring, in order to fasten upon a screw or other suitable projection provided upon the outer surface of the tank or tubin which the machine is designed to operate. The ring being fastened upon the screw aforesaid, the spring holds it securely and prevents the washing-machine from becoming detached from the tub or tank, as it is employed vin conjunction with the hooks c, which latter are hooked to suitable projections provided on the outer surface of the tank or tub, as shown at c. The latches j are pivoted at j, and act as levers in lifting the large corrugated roller H. The latches j, when lifted, impinge or press against the axles of the corrugated roller H, and thus elevate said roller to the intended height, whereupon said roller is secured at the proper elevation by lowering said latches upon screws or other projections provided in the vertical lateral pieces at the desired elevation. The longitudinal piece I has provided therein at either end a vertical aperture for the reception of the vertical pieces V, around which are coiled the spiral springs c. The lateral uprights W have each a recess or opening therein for the reception of the vertical pieces V and spiral springs. The longitudinal piece P is provided with a vertical female screw for the reception of the set-screw g', but one orA more set-screws may be similarly employed to work vertically through said longitudinal piece (as one at either end thereof) and press upon the wooden spring f. fis an adjustable springboard7 the ends thereof' tapering to fit the openings in the upright pieces Q, and said ends are provided with vertical orifices, through which project the vertical pieces V. Thus, by operating the set screw or screws aforesaid, the springs can easily be adjusted when weakened to the proper tension or pressure upon the roller H, and hence upon the articles to be cleansed. H is a large corrugated roller, whose axis is located in the upright pieces Q; and X represent five small rollers, between which and the oneaforesaid the articles, when being cleansed, are caused to pass with the aid of the crank L. O is a tank or a tub, which may be employed when preferable, as my device is capable of easy attachment to tubs of varying size by the movement of the slides j.
Claim.
The combination of the adjustable slides a., clamp b, and springs s with the tub or vat O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of January, 1873.
ABIEL ODELL.
