LOCK-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.- Patented lvlar. 22, 1921:
Application filed February 21, 1920. Serial No. 360,349.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY W DARK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Johnstown, in the county of Cambriaand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Protectors; and I do .hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a lock' protector which is particularly adapted for use in locking the doors of cupboards and storerooms and similar doors which are intended to provide quick access to supplies contained in said cupboard, storcroom, etc, by any one in case of emergency irrespective of whether the key, which is ordinarily kept in a convenient location, can be had ornot.
My lock protector is especially useful in connection with cupboards containing surgical supplies for emergency use around manufacturing establishments, such supplies consisting of plasters, bandages, medicaments, stretchers, blankets, etc. Heretofore it has been customary to leave these doors unlocked, so that in case of emergency any one could obtain immediate access to the supplies in order to treat an injured person. by first aid, but unfortunately unscrupulous persons have taken advantage of this fact and have helped themselves to these supplies to such an extent that it is frequently discovered that when such supplies are needed in an emergency they are not to be found.
My invention consists in a certain improved i'orm of lock, preferably a spring look similar to a night latch, the bolt of which extends a sufficient distance beyond the lock to expose said bolt which is provided with a convenient notch or projection in or against which the end of a finger, pencil, stick, etc., can be placed for retracting the same, this locking bolt being guided on all sides to maintain its axial movement, and this is then covered with a piece of glass or other frangible material, preferably set in a frame, the outer part of which is open with the end of the glass abutting against the door jamb in such a way that the glass cannot be removed when the door is shut. In case of an emergency when pencil, or stick inserted in the notch or against the projection, the spring bolt pushed back and the door. opened. After this is done, it is reported to the person in charge of the cupboard and the key, and he can replace the glasswith a new one by merely sliding it in position when the door is open, and when the door is closed the glass is held by the jamb, so that it cannot be withdrawn to obtain surreptitious access to the cupboard.
Having thus given a general description of my invention, I will now, in orderto make the matter more clear, refer to the annexed sheet of drawings which forms part of this specification and in which" like characters of reference refer to like"parts.:-"
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved lock protector attached to a portion of a door and showingthe adjacent part of the door jamb; Fig. 2'isa horizontalcentral longitudinal sectional plan of Fig. "1,
of the bolt, at is the lock plate on the doorjamb and is preferably made of metal. Referrlng now to Figs. 1 and 2, 5 is the lock which may be of the spring latch type, the interior details of which may be of any desired form; 6 is the inner flange of the lock which is secured to the inside of the door as illustrated, 7 is the key-hole, 8 is the casing or frame work for my glass protector, provided with a groove 9 therein to receive the edges of the glass 10. The lock bolt is 11.
In all the figures the finger notch in the bolt is 12, and although I have shown this notch 12 in the lock bolt for the purpose of inserting a finger or instrument therein to move the same, this may be either a notch or a projection, as desired.
In Figs. 3 and 1 the lock 14 isprovided with a flange 13 whereby it is secured to the inside of the door. The keyhole is 15, and the lockbolt 22 is provided with a slot 16 and an auxiliary lock bolt 17 adapted to move relative to the main lockbolt 22 but normally pressed outward by the spring 18.
iliary lock bolt 17 is provided with a notch 19. adapted to receive the spring 18 and also has a portion'of its end cut away as illustrated at 20. 21 is a set screw passing through the slot 16 in the main lock bolt 22 and engaging the inner end of the auxiliary lock bolt -17,and is thus adapted to serveas a slide and stop for the movement of the auxiliary lock bolt 17. Referring now to Fig. 5, the main lock bolt 23 is provided with a notch or cut out portion 24sand a slot 25 to receive they end Ofthe leaf spring'31, as illustrated. The
backward movement of the auxiliary lock bolt 28, and the lock bolt 23 has a projecting end 27 to serve as a limit or stop for the forward movement of the auxiliary lock bolt 28. The auxiliary lock bolt 28 has a notch 29 and projecting end 30, as illustrated, to cooperate with the other portions. Referring now to Fig. 6, the auxiliary lock bolt is 32, having a projecting end portion 33. The lock bolt 34 has a projecting end portion 35 to cooperate with the other p0rtions, and a helical spring 36 is inserted between the end of the auxiliary bolt and a portion of the lock bolt 34, so that the auxiliary bolt may move relatively to the other lock bolt- These bolts have notched or cut out portions 37 and 38 respectively.
Although I have described and illustrated my invention in considerable detaihl do Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a door, a lock mounted thereon and provided with a spring pressed bolt extending outwardly therefrom, grooves in the body of said lock, a frangible cover slidably mounted in said grooves and over said bolt and retained in place by the door jamb when the door is closed, and a finger notch in said bolt under said cover.
2. The combination with a door lock provided with an outwardly extending spring pressed bolt, of grooves in the body of said. look, a frangible cover slidably mounted in said grooves and over said bolt and adapted to be held in place by the door j amb when the door is closed, and a finger notch in saic bolt undersaid cover.
3. A lock provided with an outwardly extending spring pressed bolt having a finger notch therein, grooves in the body of said lock, a frangible cover removably secured over said bolt and having the side and inner edges slidably mounted in said grooves and the outer edge free, said cover'being thereby adapted to be held in place by the door jainb when the door is closed."
4.1-1 lock provided with a comparatively long, spring pressed bolt extending outwardly therefrom, grooves in the body of said 1ock, a frangible cover slid-ably mounted and normally retained in said grooves and over said bolt, whereby upon breaking said cover accessmay be had to a finger-notch in said bolt for retracting the same.
5. A lock provided with a spring pressed bolt extending therefrom a distance greater than the length. of the engaging end thereof. grooves in the body of said lock, a notch in said bolt, and a frangible cover slidably mounted over the same in said grooves.
6. A look provided with a spring pressed bolt extending outwardly a considerable dis tance therefrom and provided with means nature.
