le it known that I, PETER DoUnos, a citizen of Greece, residing at St. Louis vand State of Missouri, have invented new and useful improvements in Shoe-Shining Apparatus7 of which the lfollowing is a specification.
rl`his linvention relates to improvements in `devices for shining shoes and the principal object of the invention is to provide power driven means for actuating a number of instruments for polishing and drying the shoes.
Another object of the invention` is to provide means for coupling and uncoupling a Vflexible shaft, which drives the implements to and from the power shaft so that the implements can remain stationary when not in use.
Still another object of the invention is to provide means for quickly and easily removing` one implement and replacing it by another so that the different implementsv mayv he used on the iiexible shaft.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described,l
illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying' drawings wherein 'like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views` and in which Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section showing one way of carrying out my invention;

The arms at their upper ends form iournals for the power shaft 4 which is driven by a motor 5 or any other suitable source of power. The outer end of this hollow shaft is stepped as at 10 to provide one part of a coupling, the'otherrpart 11 of which 1s connected with theA power shaft. rlhe inner end of the hollow vshaft'is enlarged land this enlarged part 12 is provided Awith a spiral Irear v13. The hollow shaft 9 is removably heldin the housing by 'means of the screwthreaded.r plug lclosing one end of said housing. The housing also supports a spiral gear member 15 which engages with the member 12- so thatthe rotary movement of the hollow shaft, when it is connected with the power shaft, will be communicated to said member 15. This member is connectedwith the flexible chain 16 inelosed by the tubular member 17, forming the well-known `type of flexible/shaft. The casing'S PTO- vided with an extension sleeve 118 which forms a bearing for the cylindrical part 19 ofthe member 15.
The tubular member 17 at its outer end, carries a tubular part 20 and the chain has its outer end connected with a cylindrical part 21 which is'steppedat its outer end to form one` part of a clutch 22,;this stepped part projectingfrom the end of the tubular part 20. Each of the implements carries a sleeve 23 which is rotatably secured thereto and this sleeve is adapted to fit over the tubular part 20. The sleeve is provided with a notch 24. which is adapted toA be engaged by a linger latch 25 located adjacent the end of the flexible shaft. By this means the implement is detachably connected with the shaft. Each implement also has secured thereto cylindrical member 25 which projects into the sleeve 23 and has its end stepped to .form the other member 26 of the clutch. ln this way when the two parts of the clutch are placed in engagement and the sleeve connected with. the end of the shaft, the rotation of the flexible chain will cause the implement to be actuated.

y It will thus be seen that an implement can be easily and quickly detached from the flexible shaft and another implement connected with said shaft so that the operator may use different implements in applying the'polish to the shoes.
The means for moving the housing into operative and inoperative position, consists of a lever 33 pivoted to the .base 2 and connected with the lower part of the housing by a link 34. 1 Thus by operating said lever, the housing may be pushed over to throw the two parts 10 and 1l of the clutch into v'enn gagement to cause the lieXible. shaft to be rotated by the power shaft and when the operation of polishing the shoesis completed, the lever is moved in the opposite direction to release the clutch means.
In carrying out my invention in a shoe shining establishment, the power shaft 4; `wouldextend along the row of chairs'and a flexibleshaft would be provided for each chair. l `Asst of polishing implements would be provided for each Chair. In this way the shoes of a customer can be quickly polished so that each operator can handle a greater number of customers than he could by the hand method` i It is `thought from tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
