Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 22, 1920. Serial No. 375,820.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it lmown that I, CHARLES W. MARDEN,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Portsmouth, in the county of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire,
have invented anew and Improved Draft- Regulator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in draft regulators, an object of the inven tion being to provide automatic means for controlling the position of a damper in a smoke pipe, in accordance with the draft.
A further object is to provide a regulator of the character stated, which can be in stalled at a reasonable initial cost, and which will result in a saving of fuel, and maintain a fire at a predetermined rate of combustion, and which will prevent the overheating of stove or heater.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel featuresv of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic plan view illustrating my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating the device.
1 represents a stove or heater, connected by a smoke pipe 2 with a stack 3, and the latter provided with a dampered cold air inlet 4 and. damper 5, as is customary in this art.
The damper 5 is made with an operating weighted crank arm. 6 to which a cord 7, or other flexible connecting device is secured at one end, and is passed over pulleys 9 and connected to an operating lever 10.
The lever 10 is made with a knife edge fulcrum 11 on a post 12 projecting upwardly from a water tank 18. A hell or float 14 is positioned in the tank 13, with its lower open end sealed by the water 15 in the tank 13, and the upper end of the bell 14 is con nected by a link 16 with one end of the lever 10.
A counterbalance weight 17 is suspended from the other end of lever 10 and balances the bell 14. Y
A pipe 18 projects through the bottom of tank 13, and has its upper open end in the air space in bell 14. The other end of said pipe 18 projects into the smoke pipe 2 and between the damper 5 and the'stack 3 and is made with a curved end'l9 pointing toward the stack. v 7 e 3 An extremely small orifice 20 is provided in the top of the bell 14 which servesas a leak or by-pass passage toipermit a certain amount of. air or same. enter the bell 14 through the orifice 20 and by making this orifice small enough, it'is apparent, that varying suction in the pipe 18 will vary the pressure inside the bell.
The operation is as follows: The draft through the smoke pipe 2 causes a movement of hell 14 by'reason of the suction through the pipe 18. When this draft is normal, the bell remains stationary, but when the draft is excessive, the bell will be moved appreciably, and through the medium .of the lever 10 and cord 7 will close, or partially close the damper 5. Hence, the'damper 5 can be set at any position desired, and if there is an excessive draft of air, it will cause the damper to move so as to maintain just the checking action desired.

I claim: V
1. The combination with a stove, a smoke pipe connected therewith,'a damper in the smoke pipe, and a crank arm on the damper, of a water-sealed bell, a lever fulcrumed be tween its ends and connected at one end to the bell, a counterweight on the other end of the lever, a flexible connecting device operatively connecting the lever and the crank arm, a pipe connecting the interior of the bell with the smoke pipe, said bell having an orifice in its top.
