Be it known that I, IsAAo ALFRED BAoK- LUND, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler Pressure Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to means for regulating the draft through the fire box of a steam boiler to maintain a uniform heat therein for the purpose of keeping up a uni form pressure of steam in the boiler and is made particularly applicable to low pressure boilers. The plan of the device is to take advantage of the expansion and contraction of the steam in the boiler to manipulate the damper or dampers opening and closing the draftthrough the fire box. I have provided a construction whereby I can regulate either the dobr to the tire box or the damper in the smoke stack or both.
Other and further objects will be hereinafter described and disclosed by the drawings.
I accomplish my purpose by connecting the Water in the boiler to a tank, which in turn is connected to levers secured to the fire box door and damper respectively. The eX- pansion of the steam in the boiler forces the Water therefrom into the tank; The tank is suspended in such a manner that it has a free vertical action, whereby the weight of the Water in the same carries the tank downward and when the water recedes therefrom the tank is carried upward by means of a counter balance.
The mechanism is particularly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of a boiler and a side elevation of the smoke stack with the apparatus attached, Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional view of the tank and connecting mechanism, Fig. 3, a broken-away top plan view of the lever extending from the pipe leading to the tank and reaching to the damper shaft, togetl'ier with a transverse sectional view of the pipe, Fig. 4, a side view of the same, Fig. 5, is a transverse sectional view of the smoke stack taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1 and showing the application of the lever attached to the shaft of the damper in the smoke stack to the manipulation of a door in the smoke Stacie-and Fig. 6, is an end view of the door opening into the fire box and a. broken-away view of a lever attached thereto together with the mechanism whereby the door is attached to the boiler.
The boiler 10 has a Water tank 11 with a fire box 12 directly underneath the same and of usual construction. The tank 11 has a tap 13 reaching to thc water in the same. A passage way for water from the boiler tank 11. is provided through the tap 13, the pipe 14, the valve 15, the flexible tube 16, the vertical pipe 17 to the tank 18. The tank 18 has a tube 19 exten'ding'vertically upward from the top thereof, reaching to the interior thereof and open at the top to atmospheric pressure. The tank '18 is also provided with a float 20 of proper specific gravity to float upon the surface of the ter 21 that may be in the tank. This float 20 is also adapted to close the openingQQ reaching into the tank 18 from the water supply pipe 17, after the water has entirely receded from the tank and to close the openingQS reaching from the top of the tank 18 into the tube 19, when the tank is co-i'ripletely filled with water. The pin 2st puncturing the float 20 and reaching into the pipe 17 and the tube 19 serves as a guide to. the float to carry the same over the openings 29 and 23 as the tank 18 becomes empty and filled, respectively.
The tank 18 is suspended by the loosely arranged flexible cable; 25 attached to the tube 19. Horizontally arranged pins 26 radiate from the pipe 17 as a means whereby the same may be connected to the lever 27. The lever s7 is provided with flexible forks 28 with openings 29 through the same the said openings being adapted to engage the pins 26.
The smoke stack 30 is provided with a damper 31 adapted to fit the same and to revolve upon the shaft 32 and adapted for opening and closingthe draft through the smoke stack. In case it is desired that the door 48 alone should be operated by this mechanism, then the thumb-screw 33 may be loosened and the damper is not affected by the rise and fall of the tank 18. ()r, on the other hand, if it is desired that the damper 3i alone should be operated thereby, then the pin 45 Y may be removed, releasing the lever 46 from the rise and fall of the tank 18 and the door 48 is not affected thereby. The dotted lines 46 and 48 indicate the positions of the parts 46 and 48 respectively when the door 48 is open.
It will thus be observed that I have provided a mechanism whereby the expansion and contraction of the steam in the boiler may be utilized to operate either the door to the tire box or the damper or both at. the same time provide for clearing of the atmosphere in the boiler room.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is,
1. In a draft regulator, the combination of boiler having a flue, a damper. in said llue provided with a horizontal shaft, a lever structure disposed on said shaft and adapted to move in a substantially vertical plane and having arm portions extending in opposite directions from said shaft and normally occupying positions at an angle to the ver tical, said lever structure also having a third arm portion normally vertically disposed, a Weight on one of said first named arm portions, a tank structure on the other of said first named arm portions provided with a flexible connection with the Water space of the boiler, a weight on said third arm portion, and means for adjustably connecting said lever structure to said shaft, substantially as described.
2. In a draft regulator, the combination of a boiler having a flue, a damper in said flue provided with a horizontal shaft, a lever disposed on said shaft to move in a substantially vertical plane and having an adjustable weight on one end thereof, a tank structure adjustably mounted on the other end of said lever and having aflexible connection with the water space of the boiler, and means for adjustably connecting said lever on said shaft to vary the action of the tank and weight on said damper, substantially as described.
