LOUIS H. BLOOD, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE OESTERLEIN MACHINE COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
MILLING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lu 15, 1921 Application filed December 6, 1919. Serial No. 343,023.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS H. BLOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milling-lvlachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention, relating to milling ma chines will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a side elevation of a milling machine, exemplifying my invention, portions of the vertically adjustable knee and the supporting standards therefor bemg broken away; and
Fig. 2, a plan of the machine, partly 1n horizontal section in the plane of lines 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing:
1, indicates the frame of the machine which is in the form of a hollow column open at its top:
2, the base-plate supportingthe column, this base-plate extending well forward of the column:
3, the spindle of the machine, journaled in arms projecting as usual up from the top of the column:
4:, a cone-pulley on the spindle:
5, a countershaft journaled in the base of the column:
6, a cone-pulley on the countershaft, corresponding with the cone pulley on the spindle:
7, a belt engaging the two cone-pulleys, this belt being disposed within the hollow of the column and reaching the upper conepulley through the open top of the column:
8, a doorway in one side of the column:
'9, a vertical dovetail on the front wall of the column:
10, a knee vertically adjustable upon this dovetail, the knee being of the usual form:
11, four hollow standards rising from the forward extension of the base-plate, under the knee, each standard bearing a nut in its to 2, a screw engaging each of the nuts of the standards:
13, a spur-gear fast on each screw:
14, a vertical shaft journaled in the knee, central of the group of spur-gears 13:
15, a vspubgear fast-on this shaft and in mesh with gears 13 i 16, a bevel-gear fast on this shaft:
17, a bevel gear: and
18, a horizontal shaft journaled in the pinion engaging this bevelknee and having the bevel pinion 17 fast on screws gives especially good support to the V knee from the forward projection of the base-plate. The nuts in the tops of the standards 11 are to be separably inserted in the standards and held against rotation by set screws, thus permitting the adjustment of the nuts with reference to each other so that all of the four screws partake equally of duty in accurately sustaining the knee.
I claim l. A milling machine comprising, a hollow column having an opening in one of its sides and having an open top, arms projecting upward from the column, a spindle joined in said arms, a cone-pulley on said spindle, a countershaft j ournaled in the base of the column, and a conepulley on said countershaft below the first mentioned conepulley, combined substantially as set forth.
2. A milling machine comprising, a column having a dovetail on its front, a baseplate supporting the column and projecting in front thereof, a knee fitted for vertical adjustment on said dovetail, four hollow standards rising from the forward projection of the baseplate, said standards, screws engaging said nuts and having their tops journaled in the knee. a shaft journaled Vertically in the knee central of said four screws, spur-gears fast on the screws, a spur-gear fast on said vertical shaft and engaging the spur-gears on the screws, a bevel-gear fast on said vertical shaft, a horizontal shaft journalel in the knee and adapted to be turned by hand, and a bevel pinion fast on said horizontal shaft nuts in the tops of nuts in the tops of said standards, screws 7 engaging said nuts and'havingtheir tops journaled 1n the knee, a shaft ournaled vertically in the knee centrally of said screws,
spur gears fast on the screws, aspur gear fast on said vertical shaft and engaging the spur gears on thescrews, a bevel gear fast on said vertical shaft, a horizontal shaft journaled in the knee, and adapted to be turned by hand, and a bevel pinion fast on said horizontal shaft and engaging said bevel gear, combined substantially as set forth.
4. A milling machine comprising a base plate, and a column rising from one end thereof, a knee fitted for vertical movement on the column, a plurality ofstandards risemme ing from the base plate in front of said column, screws adjustable'with respect to said standards and having their upper ends journaled in said knee, and operating means common to all of said screws for simultaneously adjusting the screws relatively to their respective standards.
5. A milling machine comprising a base plate, and a column rising from one end thereof, a knee fitted for vertical movement on the column, a plurality of standards rising from the base plate in front of said column, screws adjustable with respect to said standards and having their upper ends journaled 1n sa1d knee, each screw being indi- V vidually adjustable with respect to its associated standard and operating means common to all of said screws for simultaneously adjusting all of them relatively to theirrespective standards.
