citizen of the United States, residing atwhichcomprises a plurality of spindles car.
rying boring tools. for making simultaneously a plurality of holes in apiece of work.
In certain kinds of work, itis sometimes necessary or desirable to bore a plurality of holes, the number of holes and their arrangement often varying in different pieces of work according to different requirements. When the arrangement of such'holes has permitted, it has been customary to form a part or all ofthem simultaneously with a multiplespindle boring machine, with a resultant saving of time and labor.
.Myinvention comprises a machine of the type just referred to, and an object of the "parts inthe different figures.
. a horizontal front invention is to construct such a machine so that it may be adjusted to form the holes in any relative positions desired within certain limits. The adjustment maybe such that the oles may be located in a straight or broken line or in a regular or irregular curve. It is, therefore, not necessary to provide separate machines to form holes in different relative positions.

Extending upwardly from the central rear portion of the table 2 is a post 3 carrying arm 4 and a horizontal rear arm 5 at itstop, and the post 3 also carries a second horizontal front arm 6 spaced. below the arm 4:, These front arms carry bearings '7 and 8 at their forward ends, the two bearings being in vertical alinement to support a vertical rotatable spindle 9, the lower. end of which isadapted to. carry. a. boring tool.
Two more posts 10 and 11 extend upwardly from the table 2,,one oneach side of the post 3. These two posts, the parts they carry and themethod of mounting them are similar so that one only need be described 1n detail to make clear the construction of' both.
The post 10 carries two horizontal front arms 12 and 13 with bearings 14 and 15 at their front ends, these bearings being in vertical alinement to support a second vertical rotatable spindle 16 spaced laterally from the spindle 9 and also adapted tocarry a boring tool at its lower end. A thirdrotatable spindle 17 adapted to carry a boring tool at its low'er end is carried in a similar manner by the post 11, as will be readily understood, and is spaced from the spindle 9 on the opposite side thereof from the spindle 16.
The arm 5 carried by thepost 3 is provided at its rear end with a bearing 18 supporting the upper end of a vertical shaft 19, the lower end of which is supported by a rear extension 20 of the table-2. This shaft 19 carries a series of pulleys 21, cor- The-rear extension 20,0f the table 2 supports a driving shaft 22 having a tight and loose pulley 23 on one end, and having its other end connected to theshaft 19 by bevel gears 24;. It is obvious that the construction described is such that a series of tools'carried by the multiplef spindles 17 9 and 16 may be driven simultaneously by a suitable belt adapted to run on the tight and loose pulley 23.
In order that the'relative positions of the spindles and the-tools carried thereby may be adjusted so as to bore holes in different relaicotive positionsin a piece of work as already referred to, the posts and 11 are each adjustably mounted on the table A horizontal guideway 25 is provided in the top of the table 2 and under the post 10 and a slide 26 is carried in this guideway, the edges of the slide and the sides of the guideway being shaped as shown to prevent all movement of the slide except longitudinally of the guideway. The post l0. has an extended base which is mountedon theslidc 26, and this post with the parts it carries may be swung in a horizontal plane about the pivot 27 fixed to the slide and-eccentric to the axis of the spindle 16 carried by the post The post 10 is secured to theslide 26 and held in any desired angular adjustment,

The provisions described for the adjustment of the spindle 16 are duplicated in connection with the spindle 17, as has already been indicated.
It is obvious that many adjustments of -.thespindle 16 would vary the distance between this spindle and the shaft 19, thereby tending to tighten or loosen the belt con-' necting this shaft and spindle. To keep the different belts under proper tension under these varying conditions, belt tighteners 3:2-
of any suitable construction are provided.
Aivork support- 33 is carried on a slide 3- mounted in the table 2 in proper position' under the tool carrying spindles.
A piece of work to be bored is laid upon the work support and raised against the boring tools by raising the work support by means of-a treadle 35 and suitable connections.
It is obvious that an adjustment of the posit-ion of the spindle 16 either about the pivot27 or longitudinally of the guideway will vary its spacing from the spindle 9. and will also vary. the shape of the horizontal line through which the spindles pass; and it is also obviousthat both adjustments malce -it possible to locate the three spindle: in
" any desired relative positions within certain limits.

Having described the preferred, form of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a multiple boring machine, a horizontal table, afixed vertical post mounted on said table and provided with horizontal arms, a boring spindle journaled in said arms, a driving shaft journaled in bearings parallel with said boring spindle, means for rotating said driving shaft, a vertical post adjustably supported by said table at one side of said fixed post, and provided with horizontal arms, a boring spindle journaled in said arms. and belt connections between said boring spindles and said driving shaft.
72. In a multiple boring machine, a horizontal table, a fixed vertical post mounted on said table. a vertical boring spindle supported by said post, a driving shaft supported by said post and parallel with said boring spindle, means for rotating said driving shaft. a slide adjustably held in ways on said table. a second vertical'post mounted on said slide. a boring spindle supported by said second post and parallel with said driving shaft. and a belt connection between said boring spindles and said driving shaft.
3. In a multiple boring machine, a horizontal table. a vertical post rigidly mounted thereon; a boring spindle supported by said I post, a driving shaft parallel with said boring spindle. means for rotating said shaft, a slide ad ustably held on said table, a second vertical postmounted on said slide, a boring spindle supported by said second post, belt connections between said boring spindles-and said driving shaft, and means for adjusting said-second vertical post-rotatively on said slide about an axis eccentric to the axis of its boring spindle.
