This invention relates to draw bench tongs. As ordinarily constructed the tongs employed to grip the endof a tube or rod in drawing "the same are manually operated and it is necessary to exert considerable pressure to properly set the gripper jaws in order to cause the same to clamp the tube or rod sutliciently tight to prevent the same from slipping during the drawing operation. Oftentimes in fact, it is found for the operator to place his foot against the end of the. bench to get the necessary pressure. This, as will be understood, is not only a dangerous operation but interferes with the work of the other bench hands. Still furthermore in the operation and use of the draw bench tongs as ordinarily constructed, the operator in addition to handling the lever which actuates the grippers also is obliged to connect the tong hook with the chain or endless conveyer for moving the tongs in the drawlng operation. This prevents the operator from handling the lever with both hands which is almost always necessar and consequently calls for assistance rom other bench hands. The object of my invention is to overcome these difficulties, and in so doing the draw bench tongs made in accordance therewith preferably comprise a set of gripper members actuated by a lever which is connected by yielding or resilient devices to the tong hook so that in the use of the apparatus, after the gripper jaws or gripping members have been engaged with the end of the tube or rod to be drawn, the tong hook is depressed and connected to the chain or conveyer and the greater the power required to draw the rod or tube the tighter the end of the rod or tube will be engaged by the gripper jaws due to the yielding or resilient connection between the tong hook and the lever for actuating the gripper jaws as will be readily understood from the construction of the apparatus as hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawing in carrying out this invention, 1 preferably employ a casing or body member 10 in the forward part of which are spaced arms 11 and 12. 'Passing through and journaled in these arms is a shaft 13, and exteriorly of the arms'the shaft 13 is provided with wheels 14:. Fitted on the shaft 13 between the arms 11 and 12 there are tong hook levers 15 and spacer bars 16. As illustrated, the levers 15 are three in number and each, at its outer extremity, provided with a hook' 17 while the spacer bars 16 are two in number and are placed intermediate of the tong hook levers 15. These parts also, as illustrated, may be connected to each other by the use of tie bolts 18 or otherwise so as to be adapted. to swing in unison on the shaft 13. 1
Extending through and journaled in the other or rearward part of the casin or body member is a shaft 19 fitted exterlorly of the casing with wheels 20 which are preferably in alinement with the wheels 14. Also in this part of the casingthere are guide ways 21 and 22 fitted respectively with gripper jaws 23 and 24 in the upper portion of each of which there is a recess 25. These gripper jaws are operated by, a lever 26 which is pivotally mounted as indicated at 27 in a bracket 28 extending from the upper surface of the casing or body member 10, that portion of the lever 26 which extends beneath the pivotal point being divided into arms 29 and 30 each adapted to engage at its extremity in the recess 25 in one of the gripper jaws. As clearly shown in Fig. 2 a predetermined portion of the adjacent sides of the gripper jaws are parallel and are adapted to approach and recede from each other by swinging the lever 26 forward or backward as may be necessary to place the end of the rod or tube to be drawn between the gripper jaws to engage the same for the drawing operation.
Together with the parts as here nbefore described, I also employ a set of ylelding or resilient connecting devices extending between the lever 26 and the tong hook levers 15. As illustrated, these preferably comprise cup disk members 31 and 32 spaced from one another and having a spring 33 extending between the same, with the extremities of the spring lying within the disks. These devices also include a rod 34, which, as illustrated, passes centrally through the disks 31 and 32 and at one end is provided with a nut 35 and at the other with an eye 36 adapted to .fit over the upper end of the lever '26 and to lie against pins 30' provided for this purpose on the sides of the lever 26. These devices'furthermore include rods 37 and 38 which adjacent one end also pass through the disks 31 and 32 and at correspondin ends are fitted with nuts 39 and 40-respect1vely, while at their opposite ends these rods 37 and 38 pass through a flange 41 extending from a cross bar 42 secured in place on the tong hook levers 15 by means of tap bolts 43 or otherwise, with the heads44 of the rods 37 and 38 hearing against the flange 41. Normally the parts are inthe, positions shown in the drawing in which the gripper jaws are open to their full extent so as to receive the end of a rod or tube shown in dotted lines and indicated at 45. With the parts in these positions the tong hook levers are depressed and the hook end portions thereof caused to engage the chain or conveyer for moving the same in the drawing operation and in so doing the lever 26 is moved forwardly through the yielding connectln'g devices and causes the gripper jaws to yieldingly engage the end of the rod or tube. e pressure or force applied to the hook members in drawing the tongs is yieldingly transmitted to the lever 26 and consequently to the gripper jaws and the rod or tube to be drawn until the disk members 31 and 32 are drawn sufficiently far to entirely compress the spring 33 and whether 'the pressure employed is sufliciently great to entirely compress the spring 33 or other wise the greater the pull applied to the hook ends of the levers the greater the force with which the gripper jaws engage the end of the rod or tube to be drawn. With this apparatus I have found that the grip originally taken by the jaws on the end of the tube or rod is sufficient to prevent the same from slipping and thereby clogging the spaces between the teeth of the gripper members, eliminating the necessity of cleannating ing the gripper jaws to enable them to propjaws, a hook lever, and devices connecting the hook lever with the means for operating the gripper jaws for yieldingly actuating the gripperjaws from the hook lever.
