IMPROVEMENT IN MARBLEIZED COMPOSITION STONE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.1 37,127, dated March 25,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs GARsoN. of
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of- New York, have invented a new and useful in Marbleized Composition Stone and Marble, of which the followingis a specification:
This invention consists in the production of mantles, table tops, casings, panels, and the like, of composition stone or marble, with fine marbleized surfaces imitating in appearance the various fine marbles with variegated colors, the said imitation-marble surfaces being applied to the surfaces of slabs or other forms of the ordinary composition stone or marble, having, if necessary, a preparatory coating of varnish or other substance to fill up the pores, either directly according to the improved process invented and described by me in my patent dated March 14, 1871, or by transfer from paper marbleized by the same process, which consists, chiefly, in first providing the surface to be marbleized with any desired color for the ground color by means of a brush or otherwise; second, immersing the surface to be marbleized in a bath of water, whereon another color--that which is to predominate, ground in oil and Dammar varnish, mainlythe latter-is floated and broken by rapidly stirring, and another veining-color mixed, mainly with oil, is also floated and broken; and, lastly, removing the surface and drying the coatin g so applied, after which a finishing coating of varnish may be applied to render the colors so applied clear and distinct.
In case the marbleizin g finish is applied by transfer from paper, the order of the applicaor other article of composition stone or marble, the veining-colors will appear in front and the ground color at the back, the same as it applied directly-the ground color being put on first. In this case the paper will be sized before the colors are put on, to prevent them from running.
By first applying the marbleizing-colors to paper and then transferring them to the object to be ornamented, I can marbleize mantels and other objects so fixed, or of such character that they cannot be dipped in the bath, which enablesme readily and cheaply to convert wood mantles, casings, panels, and the like, into apparently rich marble articles.
The advantage of marbleizing composition stone or marble is very great, for by it the elaborately-molded articl'eswhich can be so readily produced of composition can be made to imitate the finest Wrought-marble Work.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- I The process of marbleizing mantles, tables, casings, and panels, made of stone or composition, substantially as above described.
