To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN BANAszAK, a citizen of Poland, residing at Ironwood, in the county of Gogebic and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat-Stab1liz1ng Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in boat stabilizers and has for one of its objects to provide a stabilizing device swingingly mounted adjacent the opposite gunwales of a boat and capable of being swung inwardly and outwardly of the boat to either operative or 1noperative positions.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a boat stabilizer embodying a buoyant member carried by a swingingly mounted frame adjacent the opposite gunwales of a boat with latch devices associated therewith for retaining the buoyant stabilizer members in their operative and inoperative positions.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.

Briefly described, the present invention has for its main object to provide a stabilizer swingingly mounted at each side of a boat and being capable of swinging inwardly and outwardly thereof to inoperative and operative positions. Manually controlled latch devices are associated with the swinging frame supporting the stabilizers to rigidly hold the same in either operative or inoperative position, the latch devices being operable from within the boat.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, there is illustrated a boat 1 of any preferred design having a motive propelling means 2, for operating the propeller 3 while the boat is steered in the usual way by the rudder 4.
A stabilizing device is swingingly mounted adjacent the opposite gunwales 5 as shown in Figs. 3 to 6, the stabilizer per se embodying a rubber or other waterproof inflated bag 6 of elongated form as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the same being supported on the longitudinal bars 7 of a supporting frame and secured thereto by the clips 8 shown more clearly in Figs. 1,2, and 5. The longitudinal bars 7 are connected by end -rods and an intermediate rod designated by the numeral 9, the inner ends of the rods being pivotally mounted upon the inner faces of the opposite gunwales. As shown in Figs. 5 to 7 the gunwales 5 are provided with clearance slots 5 to accommodate the frame rods 9 which carry heads 10 upon the inner end thereof that are transversely apertured as at 11 for pivotal mounting upon the pins 12 in the angle brackets 13 secured to the inner face of the gunwales 5 adjacent the slots 5. When the stabilizers 6 are swung to their outward positions as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the arms 9 extend through the gunwale slots 9 and rest upon the upper edges of the gunwales.
In order to provide for a rigid mounting of the rods 9 of the stabilizer frames, a latch device is associated with each rod head 10, each latch device embodying a plate 14 slotted as at 15 and secured to the inner face of the gunwale 5 by the fastening member 16 extending through the plate slot. An angle projection 17 is carried by the plate 14 and is provided upon the inner face thereof with a nger 18 adapted selectively to engage in the transverse peripheral grooves 19 and 2O in the head 10 of the rod.
Assuming that the stabilizers are in the loo ` positions shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the rods 9 of the stabilizer frame project outwardly from the gunwale slots' while the latch ingers 18 engage in the peripheral groove 19 of the rod head 10, thereby locking the stabilizer frames in a rigid position. Vhen it is desired to move the stabilizers to their inoperative positions within the boat as shown in Fig. 4, the latch devices 14 are slid and guided by the pin 16 to disengage the angle extensionl? from the rod head, whereupon the stabilizer frames will be permitted to swing inwardly upon the pivot pins 12 to assume the position shown in Fig. 4, at which time the latch devices are moved in the opposite direction to cause the finger 18 thereof to engage the peripheral slot 20 of the rod head 10, thereby locking the stabilizers in an inoperative position within the hull of the boat. For purposes `of inflating the stabilizers 6, air valves 6 are provided in the upper face thereof as shown in Fig. 2 and if desired, a cork or wool filling may be inserted therein, as the gist of the invention principally resides in the mounting of the stabilizer frames.
Vhile there s herein shown and described what is believed to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understoodthat minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A stabilizer for boats comprising in combination with a boat having transverse slots in the gunwales thereof, a stabilizer frame, stabilizer bags supported on the frame, and means for swingingly mounting the stabilizer frame to the gunwales with said frame movable into and out of said gunwale slots.
2. A stabilizer for boats comprising in combination with a boat having transverse slots in the gunwales thereof, a stabilizer frame, stabilizer bags supported on the frame, means for swingingly mounting the stabilizer frame to the gunwales with said frame movable into and out of said gunwale slots and means for lockingthe stabilizer frames in operative and inoperative positions.
3. A stabilizer for boats comprising in combination with a. boat having transverse slots in the gunwales thereof, a stabilizer frame, stabilizer bags supported on the frame and cooperating means carried by the gunwales and stabilizer frames for holding the saine in operative and inoperative positions.
4. A boat stabilizer comprising in combination with av boat having transversely slotted gunwales, a stabilizer frame comprising rods pivotally mounted at their inner ends within the boat hull and extending through the gunwale slots, heads carried by the inner ends of said rods and coperating means carried by the rod heads and inner faces of the gunwales for holding the sta.- bilizer frames in operative and inoperative positions.
5. A boat stabilizer comprising in combination with a boat having transversely slotted gunwales, a stabilizer frame comprising rods pivotallymounted at Vtheir inner ends Within the boat hull and extending through the gunwale slots, heads carried by the inner ends of said rods, the rod heads having transverse grooves in the periphery thereof, and a sliding latch carried by the inner face of the gunwale and adapted for selective engagement in the rod head grooves for holding the stabilizer frame in operative and inoperative positions.
